411’s Buy or Sell 1.29.10: WrestleReunion 4 This Weekend, Ring of Honor Introduces a Television Title, Eighth Member of The Brotherhood to be Revealed, More!!

January 29, 2010 | Posted by Michael Bauer

Welcome everyone to Week 142 of BUY or SELL. For those of you who haven’t been with us since the beginning, here’s the Reader’s Digest version of what this column is all about. BUY or SELL is very much like 411’s long-running Fact or Fiction column. The main difference is that BUY or SELL focuses on topics like the U.S. Independent scene, Lucha Libre, Japanese Wrestling and pretty much anything else that isn’t mainstream wrestling, WWE and or TNA. This allows for these areas to get a bit more press and for you, our loyal readers, to learn even more about the sport of professional wrestling.

Questions are sent out on Monday Night.

BANNER!

  • More Japanese wrestlers should follow Masahiro Chono’s lead and become freelance wrestlers.

Kevin Ford : SELL . I’ll be the first to admit that I do not follow the Japanese wrestling scene as closely as many other writers on this website. However, from what it seems like to me, the Japanese wrestling scene is predicated on devotion and loyalty to a company and/or a certain training school. NOAH and Dragon Gate for example don’t share talent, as shown by Davey Richards no longer being booked on NOAH tours after he began working for DG. Chris Hero was a name speculated to be in DGUSA, but I’m sure politics with NOAH wouldn’t allow it. Now imagine these same politics applied to wrestlers who only wrestle in Japan. Loyalty seems to go a long way, especially if the company you’re working for was responsible for training you. It seems like not honoring and respecting where you came from is a huge deal over there. I could be wrong, and if I am, let me know.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. I’d buy this simply because I think this would be great for Japanese wrestling all around, which is still in somewhat of a slump. With legends moving more freely between companies, it will be easier for companies to put up dream matches to shore up dwindling attendance numbers. Meanwhile, this will also create room in the upper halves of the cards for younger talent to move into the spotlight, creating new main event stars that are desperately needed at this point. Of course I can see the bigger companies objecting to a potential loss in starpower, but I don’t think this would be as big a deal as it would be in America, since wrestlers are generally a lot less ‘exclusive’ already. After all, Kensuke Sasaki was the GHC World Heavyweight champion while still appearing in several other companies, and Naomichi Marafuji currently holds New Japan’s IWGP World Junior Heavyweight Championship, despite being a NOAH wrestler.

  • Chris Hero is not the mystery eighth member of the Brotherhood of the Cross.

Kevin Ford : BUY. Everyone who is reading this, I am going to say this once and only once, so please pay attention: CHRIS HERO IS NEVER RETURNING TO CHIKARA. STOP SAYING IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. IT NEVER WILL. MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIVES. Now that that’s out of the way, I really am starting to think Lince Dorado is going to pull the ol’ Horsemen beat down on his partners this Sunday and join BDK.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. While it wouldn’t entirely surprise me, and it would certainly make sense given Hero’s history with Castagnoli, but I think that the group has enough leadership in the form of Claudio Castagnoli and Ares. As far as I know the Swiss Money Holdings team has never appeared on American soil together, and I’m looking forward to that team more than I’m looking forward to a Kings of Wrestling reunion. The Bruderschaft des Kreuzes simply doesn’t need Chris Hero, and I doubt he’ll be brought in as the eighth man in a group that already has considerable starpower. I do think it will be someone from CHIKARA’s past or present roster, who does have a good reason to join up with Castagnoli and his cause, but I don’t think it will be Chris Hero.

  • F.I.S.T. will defeat the Colony for Los Campeonatos de Parejas and become the first two time title holders this weekend.

Kevin Ford : SELL. I really don’t see the point. There is far more mileage in continuing the Colony’s title streak then there is in Icarus and Akuma being champions again. The story behind the match is great (*shill* check out this weeks Chikara Special for a rundown *shill*), and I think the conclusion of the Colony besting F.I.S.T. in a titles match is far more rewarding and interesting. The Colony’s reign has just begun!

Jasper Gerretsen : SELL. If this was the Order of the Neo Solar Temple challenging, who I believe has three points following Three Fisted Tales, this one would be a lot harder to answer, all thanks to the BDK storyline. I think that, with Tim Donst being set up for Player Dos, the BDK will be going after both the Campeonatos de Parejas and the Young Lions cup, to establish themselves as the dominant stable. The Colony has been infiltrated by Pinky Sanchez and the Order has been infiltrated by Tim Donst, and both will probably be feuding extensively with BDK. Moving the belts off the Colony would effectively remove the only championship belts in CHIKARA away from their big storyline, which wouldn’t make sense.

  • Roderick Strong, Tyler Black, and Kevin Steen will win this weekend, causing no changes in Ring of Honor’s Pick Six.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. I think Tyler Black will go over simply because he has to. Joey Ryan has been on quite a run in Ring of Honor lately, but I don’t think he needs to be added to the Pick Six mix. Black losing here would probably hurt him more than it would help Ryan. Human Tornado seems to be brought in pretty much as a special attraction, since ROH is on the west coast already. The fact that he hasn’t been announced for any of the upcoming shows is a pretty clear hint that he won’t win. Meanwhile, Delirious seems to be more involved with Sonjay Dutt, with Dutt continuing to chase Daizee Haze around. Delirious claiming a Pick Six spot would make this feud more interesting, but at the same time I expect Strong to be build up for another shot at Aries, thus going over here to remain listed.

Kevin Ford : BUY. If you compare these three men to their opponents (Delirious, Joey Ryan, and Human Tornado, respectively), it’s reasonable to believe that Strong, Black, and Steen will win and keep things in the Pick Six orderly. I don’t see any upsets, especially when you consider Tyler Black has a title shot in a couple weeks, Roderick Strong is the next likely opponent for the champion, and Steen is hot off his heel turn at Final Battle. I just think it would be silly for any of them to lose.

  • Ring of Honor introducing a secondary title should have been done when they first debuted on television.

Jasper Gerretsen : SELL. While it definitely makes sense to have a television championship in the format ROH is currently running, I can understand why they held back on introducing it when the show was first launched. After all, it was a pretty big jump for both companies involved, with ROH never having produced a television show before, and HDNet never having aired wrestling. After all, not every company has been treated equally fair by their ‘network’ (see ECW and TNN). However, after the last few months it has been established that HDNet is extremely dedicated to ROH, and ROH has gotten a pretty good feel of how to put together their television shows. Add to that the fact that ROH on HDNet now has one of the best wrestling minds in the business as their executive producer, and I think this is exactly the right time to introduce the ROH Television Championship.

Kevin Ford : SELL. I absolutely believe it should have been done earlier than a year after the shows debut, but right out of the gate? No. It was best for them to spend a few tapings to introduce the fans to the characters. Then once the audience is comfortable with the main cast, you could’ve tossed the title belt into the scene. The timing wouldn’t have been right to debut it right away, but I also feel it should’ve been done awhile ago.

  • Between Rob Van Damn, The Great Muta, and Jushin Liger, two of the three will win this weekend at PWG’s event this weekend.

Jasper Gerretsen : SELL. This answer is brought to you by the department of redundancy department. The most obvious win in my opinion is The Great Muta and KAI going over the Dynasty, based simply on Muta’s track record for indy appearances in the United States. Jushin Liger doesn’t have quite that record, and I could see this match going either way. Regardless, if Liger is on that night it should be one of the best high flying matches of the year, as El Generico is the perfect opponent to match him move for move. Rob Van Dam’s three way match with Roderick Strong should be entertaining too, but in the triple threat scenario I expect either Hero to take the fall on Strong or vice versa, with RVD not being involved in the decision.

Kevin Ford : BUY. I think there’s a very strong chance Muta (and his tag partner KAI) will beat the Dynasty. I also think there’s a very strong chance of Hero beating RVD and Roderick Strong in their three way match. This leaves Liger, and while his opponent (El Generico) is a PWG darling, I just don’t see Liger losing to Generico (especially if Aries is going to beat him on the Ring of Honor show). Since I see Liger and Muta winning, my decision was easy.

    4for 6!!

The 142nd edition of BUY or SELL finishes at 4 for 6 as these two tend to be more in agreement! Stay tuned for next week as two new people step up to the plate on Buy or Sell!
