411’s Buy or Sell 2.19.10: CIMA and Gamma Win Open the Twin Gate Gold, TNA and ROH Have New Agreement, YAMATO Gets a Shot at Naruki Doi, More

February 19, 2010 | Posted by Michael Bauer

Welcome everyone to Week 145 of BUY or SELL. For those of you who haven’t been with us since the beginning, here’s the Reader’s Digest version of what this column is all about. BUY or SELL is very much like 411’s long-running Fact or Fiction column. The main difference is that BUY or SELL focuses on topics like the U.S. Independent scene, Lucha Libre, Japanese Wrestling and pretty much anything else that isn’t mainstream wrestling, WWE and or TNA. This allows for these areas to get a bit more press and for you, our loyal readers, to learn even more about the sport of professional wrestling.

Questions are sent out on Monday Night.

  • Chris Hero should have gotten his PWG World Title rematch before Davey Richards challenges for the title.

Bayani Domingo : SELL. To be fair the “logical” thing is to let Hero have his title shot first since he really should be able to cash in his shot pretty much whenever. I mean…isn’t that what they do in the “e”? But to be realistic, Davey is the hotter commodity right now and let’s face it, the man is waaaay overdue for a title reign. While I don’t think he’ll take the title right away I would be surprised if Davey wasn’t holding the title by the beginning of summer. If you are PWG and you know that you are held to the whims of TNA just to stay afloat since most of your talent keeps getting poached you had best keep your popular talent happy for as long as you can. The sad reality is that Hero has just lost too much steam in PWG right now and it’s time for a change, let’s see what Omega can do with the title first, however before we declare Davey the next savior.

Jeffrey Harris : BUY. Yeah, I’ll buy that. Chris Hero was never granted his contractually obligated rematch after he lost the belt. He didn’t lose the triple threat match at Russellmania. Richards who is now ROH’s goldenboy isn’t focused on PWG. Chris Hero on the other hand is the saviour of all professional wrestling. He is the HERO that professional wrestling that we need when we have Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff infecting and plaguing TNA and HHH violating the WWE. Hero earned and his deserved his title shot and should get his title shot first.

  • YAMATO will defeat Naruki Doi to end Doi’s four hundred play day reign as Open the Dream Gate champion.

Bayani Domingo : SELL. I like YAMATO, I’ve seen him only once and he had some great charisma as a heel and I actually wished he had remained as one. I just don’t see him as the “next” in DG and while I think he’ll have his day, I can’t imagine that they are taking the title off Doi for YAMATO and I think this is going to be a great little match, but I just don’t see it being built up as YAMATO’s coming out party. I’d put money on him challenging and winning the Open The Freedom Gate title though in the near future.

Jeffrey Harris : SELL. Yamato is a scrub. Naruki Doi is the veteran and gold standard of Dragon Gate. Naruki Doi is a true ace and champion having won titles in Dragon Gate, ROH, and NOAH. Yamato will not be able to contend with Doi’s awesomeness and being the Dragon Gate Ace.

  • CIMA and Gamma would be better served defending the Open the Twin Gate Tag Titles at Wrestlemania Weekend, instead of being in two six man tag matches.

Bayani Domingo : SELL. They’ll be good matches regardless. Team USA vs Team Japan and then you have Warrior-5…or is it 3 vs World-1. Although there are like 5 or 6 of them…weird. I thought the Japanese were supposed to be good at math. Anyways…I really don’t think the US fans care as much about the titles and the title matches as much as the actual matches and when you look at it, I can’t imagine that the actual match quality will suffer in the slightest. PLUS, this just makes the 2 title matches on the card even more important, right?

Jeffrey Harris : BUY. Yes. I’d much rather see them in a bout for the Twin Gate title rather than in separate random six man tags. That makes no sense. It’s Wrestlemania Weekend. Doing title matches is so much better.

  • Rhett Tutus and Rasche Brown signing deals with Ring of Honor isn’t a big deal in the long run.

Jeffrey Harris : SELL. I say sell because it’s good business to sign long-term deals with guys like Titus and Brown to build your roster around. Titus and Brown are both good and talented and since ROH is having a new title division, you need some stable guys you can book on ROH’s TV show.

Bayani Domingo : BUY. Rasche Brown? I’m not even sure who that is. I mean, I’ve heard of the guy but…who? Rhett Titus is also a nice little addition to the roster, but…he’s BEEN on the roster. Contract or not. These guys are nice mid-card guys to have and considering RoH has been literally bleeding out talent for the past year, they simply aren’t real big “free agent signings”. Maybe RoH should have just saved their money for a big run at a couple Max Contract type players in the off-season. I mean, everyone ELSE is making a run at LeBron…why not?

  • Tyler Black will not be Ring of Honor World Champion at the end of the summer.

Special Thanks to the ROH NYC Veterans Facebook Group for this picture

Jeffrey Harris : SELL. I think Black will hold the title through the summer. ROH tends not to hotshot their belt reigns a lot and there are not a lot of huge contenders for the belt. This opens up a nice long reign for Black to hold the belt. Plus this title run has been in the making for like two years. Besides Aries or Hero, I don’t think there are many guys that can hold the belt right now especially now that Danielson is gone. This gives ROH some time to build future champions and perhaps Davey Richards to hold the world title.

Bayani Domingo : SELL. He’ll still be champion… even it was about 7 or 8 months too late to give it to him, but he’ll stilll be champion because right now they need to build another top level of talent and brand them as the “main guys” and right now Tyler Black has to be considered one of the top 5 guys in the company talent wise, if not in the top 3, so they need to really let the fans know that and the best way to cement him is to give him that nice big shiny belt and let him hold it for a while. Unless somehow Davey snatches it up quickly which would be a MEGA burn.

  • With TNA once again allowing their talent to appear in Ring of Honor, we will see both Samoa Joe and AJ Styles return this year.

Jeffrey Harris : SELL. I’ll say sell for now. Mainly because I don’t see AJ Styles doing it while he’s in the main angles in TNA. That is until he’s made Hulk Hogan’s job boy and becomes an irrelevant performer there again. I think it will be more for the X division guys like Sabin and Shelley who are borderline irrelevant and are only paid to come in and do Xplosion matches in TNA. And probably Generation Me types as well.

Bayani Domingo : BUY. I’ll say that Joe will be in RoH first and more often. I know AJ was a big part of RoH in the past, but Joe WAS RoH for a good long time and given the backlash aimed at TNA I would think that AJ’s return would mean much less than Joe’s. Not a knock on the guy’s talent, but if there was an RoH Hall of Fame, Joe would be an unanimous first ballot shoe-in. Besides, AJ is a champion and by the looks of it, Joe is in for a rough road of booking for a while. I mean…the man lost to a debuting bi-sexual tranny.

The 145th edition of BUY or SELL finishes at 2 for 6 as these two tend to be more in disagreement! Stay tuned for next week as two new people step up to the plate on Buy or Sell!
