411’s Buy or Sell 3.05.10: Title vs. Title in Phoenix, Death Haze Tear up CHIKARA, Davey Richards Wins Another World Title, More!

March 5, 2010 | Posted by Michael Bauer

Welcome everyone to Week 147 of BUY or SELL. For those of you who haven’t been with us since the beginning, here’s the Reader’s Digest version of what this column is all about. BUY or SELL is very much like 411’s long-running Fact or Fiction column. The main difference is that BUY or SELL focuses on topics like the U.S. Independent scene, Lucha Libre, Japanese Wrestling and pretty much anything else that isn’t mainstream wrestling, WWE and or TNA. This allows for these areas to get a bit more press and for you, our loyal readers, to learn even more about the sport of professional wrestling.

Questions are sent out on Monday Night.

  • Ares and Claudio will win the Campeonatos de Parejas in March to give the Brotherhood of the Cross all CHIKARA gold.

Jasper Gerretsen : SELL. I simply think it’s too fast for the Brüderschaft des Kreuzes to establish total dominance. While there’s a lot to be said for a blitzkrieg by the newly formed rudo stable, I think that at this point it’d be wiser to have the Colony fight off the aggressors for at least a few more months. After all, the Brüderschaft currently controls the booking, and it’s not like they can’t give any BDK team a title match at moment’s notice by having Von Steigerwalt book the team in a four way elimination match against Los Icecreams, a Chivas team and a team of ROH students. CHIKARA has always taken its time to develop their storylines, and I don’t think they’ll rush the eventual BDK title win.

Chris Lansdell : BUY. There’s not really anyone else who could take the tag titles, and the Brotherhood have been built up and pushed so hard that I can definitely see this happening. I haven’t been a fan of CHIKARA for long, but the Neo-Solar Temple, the Osirian Portal, the Roughnecks, or even F.I.S.T. were never given this much momentum, and the Brotherhood has the name value to make this work.

  • Sara Del Rey and Daizee Haze being booked of the bullies of the Brotherhood of the Cross makes no sense.

Jasper Gerretsen : SELL. While I understand that many people might object to having Death Haze in this role because they’re women, I think CHIKARA can get away with it for two reasons. First of all, the size difference between the two women and most men on the roster isn’t nearly as bad as it would be in pretty much any other company. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sara Del Rey is actually bigger than guys like Ophidian, Green Ant and Ultramantis Black. Second of all, they have a reason to be bullies. For years they’ve been competing against each other, making up 90% of what little women’s wrestling CHIKARA had, and for years they’ve been wanting to prove that they don’t need a division of their own, that they can be just as dangerous as any man on the CHIKARA roster. The BDK has given them that chance, and the motivation they have to prove themselves has beem made quite clear at the past few shows.

Chris Lansdell : BUY, but with one caveat: so what? This is CHIKARA, nothing makes sense. That’s part of the gimmick. To be honest I’m on the fence with this one, but I’m leaning to the Buy side because Sara is about the same size as most CHIKARA guys, and she looks like a bully. Daizee, not so much. Still, if you want to get a female tag team over as a threat in a male division, this is the way to do it.

  • Pro Wrestling Guerilla made the wrong decision in having Davey Richards win the PWG World Title.

Jasper Gerretsen : SELL. As far as I can tell, there would be two reasons not to have Davey Richards win the PWG championship: the fact that Omega had just won it and the problems surrounding his contract status with ROH. Now, I can understand why people would want Omega to have a longer reign, especially considering the circumstances he won the title in, but Richards is a big enough name to ensure that Omega doesn’t end up looking like a scrub for losing it on his first defense, especially since Richards was probably the biggest absentee from the tournament where Omega claimed the belt. Second of all, I see no reason why ROH would want to keep Richards out of PWG. After all, the two companies hardly fish from the same pond, unlike ROH and DGUSA, with PWG sticking pretty much entirely to the west coast. I also think that moving the title to Richards was a smart move simply because he spends a lot less time in Japan than Omega, making it easier to book the champion on every show, which is something I think every indy company should strive to do.

Chris Lansdell : BUY times eleventy billion. But then, I’m biased. Any time Kenny Omega drops a title, I’m not going to like it. I do like Davey Richards and I think he’s got buckets of talent, but I don’t understand why every promotion is falling all over itself to give him gold. Ask Gabe and EVOLVE, or DG USA, or FIP, what happens when you rely on Davey to front your promotion. If you had to take the belt off Kenny (and nobody ever should…), I really don’t trust Davey with it. Besides Davey, I thought you were exclusive to ROH now, because they paid you enough to stay with them? Or was the pull of more gold too much for you?

  • With Full Impact Pro running it’s first event in five months in April, they will be the next Indy Fed to go under.

Chris Lansdell : BUY. I think it will be tight between them and EVOLVE, but right now the same booker/owner team is running both feds and they seem to be putting far more money and time into EVOLVE. FIP was never known for drawing mammoth crowds, and it doesn’t have the name value that EVOLVE does. That said, both will be lucky to make it to the end of 2010.

Jasper Gerretsen : SELL. I don’t think that running less shows is necessarily a sign of the company going under as much as it is a sign of times being lean in general. After all, Ring of Honor has only run two shows so far in 2010, even though they had run six by this time in 2008 and seven in 2009. FIP lost a lot in its partnership with ROH, but it gained a valuable new partner in DGUSA. While 2010 obviously won’t be as prolific a year for them as 2009 was, I think that the partnership with the new company (and all the other minor indy companies that are working with DGUSA) will be enough to at least keep it afloat.

  • One of the American Wolves will win the Ring of Honor Television Title this weekend.

Chris Lansdell : BUY. I’m not picking against Davey here. ROH alienated a lot of people by securing Davey, and reportedly are paying him a tidy sum, so they will want to get their money’s worth. With Roderick Strong and Austin Aries in the immediate title picture, giving Davey the TV title while Black builds up a nice little reign makes sense.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. In the semifinals, we have Kevin Steen taking on Eddie Edwards and Kenny King taking on Davey Richards. While I think that a match between the two wolves will definitely take place somewhere in the future, I don’t think that ROH will be giving away the first match between the two on free TV. Personally, I expect Steen to beat Edwards, and Richards to beat King, with Richards beating Steen in the finals. Steen’s feud with Generico will work just fine without the television title involved, and King is better off in the tag division at the moment. As it stands, I think Richards is the most likely candidate for ROH’s first television champion.

  • BxB Hulk vs. Naruki Doi for both the Open the Dream Gate and Open the Freedom Gate Titles will end in no title changing hands.

Chris Lansdell : BUY. Good grief no, a double champion? Why? The whole point behind creating the Freedom Gate title was to lighten the load on the Dream Gate champion. BxB Hulk only just won his belt and won’t drop it yet, and Doi is the golden boy of the promotion. Hulk isn’t the one to dethrone him, at least not yet. When an American beats him for the Freedom Gate belt, then maybe he can beat Doi for the belt. This smells of a time-limit draw or a double DQ. Maybe even a double pin, they’re always fun.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. With Naruki Doi being the face of Dragon Gate and BxB Hulk being the face of its American sister promotion, I simply can’t see a title change happening here. I actually wouldn’t be too surprised to see YAMATO dethrone Naruki Doi at the March 22nd Dragon Gate show. YAMATO’s stock has been steadily rising, and he qualified for his title shot in a crazy no-rope no-DQ match at Infinity 165. Meanwhile, Naruki Doi has definitely been losing some momentum over in Japan. DGUSA has the added advantage of being able to put on one of their signature crazy six man tag matches to send the fans home happy, so even if they end up having to do a shady finish (something along the lines of a double countout), they can still send the fans home happy.

    2 for 6!!

The 147th edition of BUY or SELL finishes at2 for 6 as Lansdell has to buy everything and make himself broke! Stay tuned for next week as two new people step up to the plate on Buy or Sell!
