411Mania 2010 Independent Draft 7.01.10: Part Four – Rounds Twelve Through Fourteen

July 1, 2010 | Posted by Ari Berenstein

=In the Draft War Room=

Then there were the moments of flat-out wackiness, the sort of geeky one-liners you could only see happen when you put nine wrestling fans in the same online meeting room and let them have at it for four hours. Here is a sampling of some of the wacky, but I’ll let you, the reader, try to figure out the subject matter for each comment.

Chris: BURNING HAMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Ari : TIMBERRRRRRRR!
Chris: He’s lost, he says. Must have seen a boob.
Mike: [I] always write Cheech and Chong.
Jeremy: Sforcina is delusional. He thinks I’ll actually part with her for less than all the rest of his draft picks.
Aaron: BEARD!

=Round Twelve=

With the 94th pick in the 2009 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Wrestling…on the WEB!! (WOTW) selects…

Lance Cade
-Wrestling out of: San Antonio, Texas
-Former WWE World Tag Team Champion (with Trevor Murdoch)
-Trained by Shawn Michaels
-Finisher: Sit-Out Spinebuster

Chris Lansdell: Another shocking freefall. Lance Cade was once tagged with a rocket headed for the top of WWE’s roster until he said no to the wrong advances and get released. Well, WOTW is here for his future endeavors. Cade was trained by Shawn Michaels, which instantly makes him awesome. And Lance vs. Lance could be a blast.

2009 Draft: 1st round, 5th pick overall, Martinez
2008 Draft: Not Eligible
2007 Draft: Not Eligible

With the 95th pick in the 2009 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, New York Knock-Out Wrestling (NY-KO) selects…

Brodie Lee
-Wrestling out of: Lincoln, Nebraska
-Getting Opportunities in EVOLVE and CHIKARA
-Currently Associated With The UnStable
-Finisher: Running Big Boot, Black Hole Slam

Ari Berenstein: Two years ago I selected Brodie Lee in the draft because I saw a lot in him as a bruiser big man stomping down the competition. Plus, he had one of the all-time best entrance-songs with Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down”. It’s just impossible not to have your adrenaline pumping after hearing that song, which should help Lee quickly get over with the fans. However, this time around Lee joins an already stacked line-up of brawlers, big men and tough guys in the NY-KO promotion. He’s going to have a lot of competition and will be on a quest to prove himself against guys such as Rasche Brown, Scott Steiner and Necro Butcher. Still, I like Lee’s height and his demeanor from entrance to exit—dude comes barreling straight down to ringside and doesn’t stop until his opponent is road kill.

2008 Draft: 11th round, 91st pick overall, Berenstein

With the 96th pick in the 2009 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Wichita Wrestling: Junior Division (WWJD)selects…

Kid Kash
-Wrestling out of: Johnson City, Tennessee
– Wrestled for Original ECW, TNA and WWE
– Somewhat Notorious (Recent Legal Troubles)
-Finisher: The Money Maker, Flying Frog Splash

Aaron Hubbard: At this point, I was rabidly looking for any junior heavyweights with name value who could work that weren’t drafted yet, and when Kid Kash was still available I decided to pick him up. Kash will be used as a heel to help elevate babyface talent.

Previous Draft Selection
2009 Draft: Not Selected
2008 Draft: 8th round, 67th pick overall, Thomas
2007 Draft: 10th round, 56th pick overall, Csonka

With the 97th pick in the 2009 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Professional Wrestling of Windsor and Detroit (PWWND) selects…

Louis Lyndon
-Wrestling out of: East Lansing Dojo
– Teams with Flip Kendrick as Aeroform
– Super Junior, Flying Style
-Finisher: Short Arm Shotay

Chad Nevett: Louis Lyndon: What I said for Flip Kendrick goes here. Both men are smaller and make a good contrast as a team to a group like Dark City Fight Club, but also fit in with guys like Jimmy Wang Yang and Johnny Gargano. They’ve got the right energy and passion to be great in that opening match slot, getting the crowd hot.

With the 98th pick in the 2009 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Total Package Women’s Wrestling (TPWW) selects…

Rain
-Wrestling out of: St. Paul, Minnesota
-Member of the International Home Wrecking Crew (with Jetta)
-Has Wrestled for ROH, SHIMMER and TNA
-Finisher: Rain Drop, Acid Rain

Jeremy Thomas: As the draft winds down, TPWW feels incredibly lucky to have a woman as talented as Rain available to select for its roster. Rain is known as a tag team specialist, having teamed with Lacey as part of the Minnesota Homewrecking Crew and then with Jetta when she joined the group to become the International Homewrecking Crew. Rain has national exposure as Peyton Banks in TNA and brings a lot of skills to the ring. And of course, she’ll have the opportunity to win gold in both divisions.

With the 99th pick in the 2009 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Pro Wrestling 3.0 (PW3) selects…

U-Gene Nick Dinsmore
-Wrestling out of: Louisville, Kentucky
-Uses “Eugene” Gimmick on the Independents
-Accomplished Technical Wrestler
-Finisher: German Suplex

Mathew Sforcina: But before I could finish my Younger idea, I had to get Dinsmore first. Because if there’s anyone that got jerked about by WWE, it’s Dinsmore. Sure, he might have come up with the Eugene character, but the fact is that he was a good looking kid who could wrestle, and he got saddled with a bloody stupid gimmick. I took him in OVW, and I would have taken him last time had he not been stolen too early, and I damn well took him this time. If only to have him and my authority figure interact in an intelligent manner…

2009 Draft: 11th round, 68th pick overall, Lansdell
2008 Draft: 3rd round, 23rd pick overall, Sforcina
2007 Draft: Not Selected

With the 100th pick in the 2009 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Pro Wrestling Symphony (PWS) sele cts…

TJP
-Wrestling out of: The Philippines
-Also Known as Puma
-Currently on EVOLVE Roster
-Finisher: Corkscrew Swinging DDT, Tiger Suplex

Jasper Gerretsen: For its twelfth pick, Pro Wrestling Symphony has selected TJP, the man formerly known as TJ Perkins and Puma. TJP has recently relocated to the east coast to increase his exposure and to hopefully secure a contract with one of the bigger companies. With his skills both on the mat and in the air well proven, TJP is a perfect addition to the PWS locker room.

2009 Draft: 13th round, 84th pick overall, Hubbard
2008 Draft: 8th round, 69th pick overall, Westerfeld
2007 Draft: 10th round, 57th pick overall, Adamson

With the 101st in the 2009 411Mania Independent Pro Wrestling Draft, Pro Wrestling 3.0 (PW3) selects…

Josh Prohibition
-Wrestling out of: Brecksville, Ohio
– Follows Straight-Edge Belief System
– Wrestles in Mid-West, Canada
-Finisher: The Sobriety Driver, The Path of Resistance

Mathew Sforcina: And here I rounded the bend. Matt Cross was sadly taken, so the Burning River Brigade were unavailable. But by taking Josh, and then adding in Younger… Then I could go with the plan. Given that I now have two men known for being ‘extreme’ and ‘deathmatch’ guys, it allows me to have them go nuts and make the beatdowns seem that much worse….

Balls Mahoney
-Wrestling out of: Nutley, New Jersey
-Former Original ECW Tag Team Champion
-Recent Surprise Appearance in ROH
-Finisher: Nutcracker Suite, New Jersey Jam

Michael Bauer: Who has Big Balls? We have Big Balls! We really wanted Tommy Dreamer for a specific role, but missed him by sticking to the plan and thinking he would fall. Balls Mahoney is a more than adequate replacement for the role we had in mind and a much better fit in SEX.

Cassandro El Exotico
-Wrestling out of: Mexico
– Known as “La Riena Del Ring”
-Recently Participated in ROH iPPV
-Finisher:

Michael Bauer: Well, Vegas is known for the exoticness of their shows and this pick will make SEX no exception. This guy is as wild as he is eccentric and talented in the ring. No doubt, he will be a great addition to the fold.

Maria Kanellis
-Wrestling out of: Los Angeles California via Ottowa, Illinois
-Recent Appearance on NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice
-Pursuing Career in Music and Entertainment
-Finisher: Running Bulldog

Mathew Sforcina: My authority figure, which works out well, given that she’s been proven to be a decent businesswoman after the Apprentice, and thus has
enough of a justification to put her in charge and have it make sense and work. Plus, with a woman at the head, it made the deal with JT make more sense.

The Metal Master~!
-Wrestling out of: Liberty, Indiana
-He’s The Master of Metal, Obviously
-Wrestled in ROH & Mid-West Indpendents / NWA
-Finisher: Texas Cloverleaf

Jasper Gerretsen: For its thirteenth pick, Pro Wrestling Symphony adds yet another mask to its lineup with the addition of Metal Master. The former Chad Collyer has wrestled the world over, training everywhere from Japan to Europe to North America. While Chad Collyer might not be what PWS looks for in a wrestler, we feel that the Metal Master will fit in perfectly.

Tim Donst
-Wrestling out of: Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania
-Former Prized Pupil of Mike Quackenbush, Now Member of BDK in CHIKARA
-College Amateur Wrestling Base
-Finisher: The Donstitution

Sam Berman: Though it is unclear whether KOAKH is getting a focused amateur savant or an aggressive, conniving weasel with this selection, but KOAKH Pro management sees nearly unlimited potential in 106th overall selection Tim Donst. Late in a draft is the time when companies can make or break their rosters. While KOAKH recognizes that earlier trades have depleted the bottom of our draft board, we see Tim Donst as a one man wrecking machine as our final pick in the 2010 411mania Independent Wrestling Draft. Donst promises big things and KOAKH management is willing to believe.

Jetta
-Wrestling out of: Coventry, England
-Member of the International Home Wrecking Crew with Rain
-Master of The Sprinkler
-Finisher: Straightjacket Lung Blower

Jeremy Thomas: With Rain as the 98th pick, Jetta was the only real choice for TPWW’s second-to-last selection. Coventry’s Loudest has been one of the top-ranked women in multiple ranking sets over the last several years and has come within a stone’s throw of holding gold in SHIMMER several times. With Rain and Jetta together in TPWW, the Tag Team Titles are very well within their grasp and the competition for them will be quickly heating up.

“Scrap Iron”Adam Pearce
-Wrestling out of: Chicago, Illinois
-Current Booker of ROH and NWA
-This is Where The Power Lies
-Finisher: Piledriver

Chad Nevett: I was surprised that Pearce hadn’t been picked yet. The current NWA champion and booker for ROH, Pearce has a solid history in the business. He can work in a lot of different spots in a promotion, anywhere on the card, and with anyone. Probably my luckiest pick of the whole draft.

Shawn Daivari
-Wrestling out of: Minneapolis, Minnesota
– Former Member of World Elite in TNA
-Currently on ROH Roster
-Finisher: Camel Clutch

Aaron Hubbard: Daivari’s biggest asset to my promotion is his ability to talk. Daivari was a guy I wanted but had kind of forgotten about during my failure-induced stupor, but he was luckily still available at my second to last pick. He’s another solid heel act and gives me someone to beat up Grizzly for a while.

Daisuke Sekimoto
-Wrestling out of: Japan
-A Top Name in Big Japan Pro Wrestling
-Strong Powerhouse Style
-Finisher: High Angle Bridging German Suplex

Ari Berenstein: I’m super-ecstatic for this pick-up, which is a huge-value pick for this late in the draft. Sekimoto is a short but stocky powerhouse wrestler for Big Japan. He’s been most visible in America during several shows for CHIKARA, including most recently the King of Trios 2010 tournament. Like many other Japanese imports, his charisma and star-power comes from letting his actions doing the talking—and his impressive suplexes and power moves certainly do so. In addition to KENTA and Nakajima, Sekimoto continues a core-philosophy for NY-KO to have strong international co-operation from several Japanese promotions.

Ricky Reyes
-Wrestling out of: Havana, Cuba
-Frequently Wrestles for International Wrestling Cartel (IWC)
– Multiple Time Tag Champion in ROH
-Finisher: Avalanche Brainbuster

Chris Lansdell: The Havana Pitbulls were awesome, and we loved Reyes in his “crush the ROH students” role a few years back, before ROH sold out and got all sports entertainment shit on us. He won’t have to worry about any of that nonsense here in WOTW, where wrestling is all that matters.

Bubba The Love Sponge
-Hailing From: Florida
– Hosts His own Talk Show on Howard Stern Network
– Ex-Employee of TNA (Backstage Interviewer, Hanger-On)
-Finisher: Douchebag Style Radio Ambush

Chris Lansdell: Bubba has something that is almost impossible to come across: nuclear heat. The man is legit hated, and being that sort of heel can only be good for any face who opposes him.

“The Russian Highlight Reel” Alex Koslov
-Wrestling out of: Moscow, Russia
-Wrestles Predominately in AAA
-Loves the Babushka
-Finisher: Soviet Frog Splash Elbow, Red Strike

Ari Berenstein: I was initially looking to select Johnny Goodtime at some point, but I risked him going undrafted (and thus available in the general pool) in order to select Koslov. The Russian Communist gimmick is surprisingly entertaining to the wrestling fan base…they get into it with chants for “Russia! Russia!” and the Babushka dance. Koslov is young but versatile and you can plug him in with anyone from Omega to Brodie Lee and get something entertaining out of it. There may also be a good advertising push for Koslov in terms of using his heritage and roots. NY-KO perhaps can appeal to the stronghold Brighton Beach Russian community and up our overall attendance through Koslov’s appearances on these shows. Overall, a winner of a final pick for my promotion.

-Wrestling out of: The Projects of Neverland Ranch
– Infiltrated The Colony As Carpenter Ant, Now Wears Mask as Symbolic Antagonism
-Member of the Bruderschaft des Kruzes
-Finisher: Burning Hammer, Inverted CHIKARA Special

Aaron Hubbard: Sanchez has been a pretty integral part of CHIKARA storylines recently, which made me kind of surprised that he was still here at my last pick. Pinkie is another solid hand and provides a partner for Lince.

Allison Danger
-Wrestling out of: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
-Gave Birth, Now Back in Regular Action for SHIMMER
-Appeared on first ROH show in 2002
-Finisher: SHIMMERing Warlock, Expulsion ‘07

Jeremy Thomas: With our last pick, TPWW selects a member of the roster that has been with us since we joined the Independent Draft. Allison Danger is the co-runner of SHIMMER and has had her own share of tussles with some of the top women wrestlers in the world, many of which she will be tangling with here in TPWW. Danger brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the industry with her and her skills in the ring, on the mic and behind the scenes will certainly make her a important part of our promotion. This is a clear example of “last but not least” and we’ll be looking forward to seeing what she brings to the company.

-Member of British Militia Wrestling Stable
-Finisher: South City Driller

Mathew Sforcina: Another guy WWE kinda jerked around a bit, people just remember him for that promo. But he’s actually a decent wrestler, in the English style. Plus having another Brit would work out well for the overall arc involved….

-Finisher: Tombstone Piledriver, Brain Bite

Jasper Gerretsen: For its fourteenth and final pick, Pro Wrestling Symphony has apparently accidentally raised the dead. By reading over what we thought was a page out of our standard contract but was actually a fragment of the Necronomicon, we have found ourselves in the possession of Izzie Deadyet. While we here at PWS oppose necromancy in principle, we take full responsibility for this mishap by keeping Izzie under our watch.

-Finisher:Iron Claw Chokeslam, Powerbomb, Bisontennial

=In the Draft War Room=

You have to love the moments of disagreement with someone’s selection—when someone picks somebody and it makes one say—REALLY? REALLY? Case in point:

After Bob Holly was selected at #79
Mat: REALLY? Bob Holly? He’s still getting drafted?> Yeesh

After Bubba the Love Sponge was selected at # 111
Jeremy: I’m pretty sure that automatically makes my promotion hate Lansdell’s just based on talent friction. I love the potential though.

After Hade Vansen was picked at # 117
Mike: who?

Final Rulings: as indicated by Mat, Larry Sweeney was a pick several asked about in the late stage of the draft. Initially he was listed as eligible on the availability list, although it was intended to drop him due to his inactivity around the independent scene (despite a brief one shot deal in ROH this past December). However, since that was never made clear to the draft players, I have made available Larry Sweeney as a free pick for those who have asked about it. Therefore, you might see him pop up in more than one promotion on our upcoming results card.

POST DRAFT NOTE: TPWW and PW 3.0 have announced an alliance allowing for use of talent and cross-promotion.

Mathew Sforcina: As soon as I heard that JT was doing an all women’s fed, I knew two things. One, I had no chance of getting Tara. And two, I had no chance of getting a women’s division worth a damn. So, long before we made our picks, I cut a deal, to be my ROH to his SHIMMER. I use his talent, I recognize his belts. That way, I get the best damn women’s division, free of charge, and I got a nice big, deep roster. Everyone wins! Except those other guys who didn’t think of this first.

(So it looks as if Sforcina wins out in the end—he gets his hands on Tara after all! The world should be afraid…)

BUT WE’RE NOT DONE YET! Coming up next, each of our fantasy draft participants will present to you their full cards for the show they would run with their roster. Be sure to find out who booked the best show!
