The Wrestling 5 & 1 09.25.10: Velvet Sky vs. Gail Kim

September 25, 2010 | Posted by Larry Csonka

WELCOME
Hello one and all, yes, I am back and back again to deliver a news report. Sometimes keeping people around is hard, and when work schedules change, so does the 411 schedule. Anyway, I will be covering the old 5&1 for now and I will try to have some fun with it. I am a big fan of Steve Gustafson over in the movie zone, and he writes a great column called The Hollywood 5 & 1. I look forward to this column each and every week. The format is a popular one, it spawned The Music 5 & 1, and then of course there is the Silicon Valley 10 & 1 over in the games section. So I figured, what the hell, I will give it a shot in the wrestling zone. Enjoy the column!

TAKER vs. KANE?

“This is what really caused the feud…”

VS.

Now it is time to get interactive. This is the special “VS.” part of the column, where beautiful women go to battle to see who is the hottest piece of ass of the week. Last week Velvet Sky took her second victory over Miss Tessmacher, and is one step closer to the Hall of Bang. And now this week, current TNA Knockout Velvet Sky will step into the VS arena as she battles current WWE piece of ass Gail Kim!

Make sure to vote!

Winner stays! 4 wins gets you to the Hall of Bang!

* Reading the early reviews of my new movie Passion Play. Look people, I’ll know when I’ve ruined my career. I kind of invented it.

* Few people know that I actually sleep in a race car bed…by which I mean the Ferrari that I’m hiding from creditors.

* My accountant won’t stop calling. I don’t answer because I just know he’s going to lecture me about buying that solid gold robot.

* Even Chelsea Handler’s ringworm thinks she sucked at hosting.

* Alright assholes, how long have I had this harpoon in my back?

THE FIVE FOUR!
Due to a hectic week and the ongoing cardiac rehab schedule, I am doing four this week. You really don’t reads this stuff anyway, you just click for the tits. It’s cool, I understand.

RANKINGTHE WALLS HAVE FALLEN FOR NOW…: Once again, it is going to be a sad day for wrestling because Chris Jericho is taking a hiatus from the WWE. Now most seem to think that it isn’t a big deal, he’ll be back likely by January, but I have to say that this could not come at a worst time. Chris Jericho is one of those guys that holds this company together, and it is going to be in some trouble without him. First of all, WWE has suffered loss this year, losing HBK, Batista and basically HHH. While HHH does plan to eventually return, when you lose names like that, it is never a good thing. Combine that with the fact that WWE still hasn’t fully made and gotten behind a new batch of stars and they are struggling. Ratings are steady but now dropping with the yearly return of Monday Night Football. PPV buyrates are down, and as predicted the gimmick PPVs are a failure. That’s what happens when you have writers and not bookers. Writers write the stories that they think are good, and then attempt to plug in the talent to make it work. A booker takes the talent they have, knows who will or who could work well together, and crafts the angles around that. But not only is Jericho the glue that holds the shows together much of the time, but his unselfishness makes him such an asset. He has been willing to drop down and take a smaller role in the IC Title Division, he will work with any one, and more importantly than that, he is willing to lose and give the rub to guys like Evan Bourne, Kofi Kingston and John Morrison, the younger guys, the newer stars that they have to make. Sure, he’ll likely be back, and be back in January, but until then, the show won’t be quite as good, and overall it will hurt the product.

RANKINGCHRISTIAN IS DOWN: Speaking of departures, although his is due to an injury, we come to Christian. Smackdown is over, so you have already watched them write Christian off of the show, we’re safe to talk about this. Christian has suffered a torn pectoral muscle and due to that, is expected to be out six months. He has already had surgery, which was said to be a success. Christian looks to be back in March, so he COULD be back in time for the big dance, and I hope he is for the simple fact that I want him to get the big fat MANIA BONUS CHECK. While this sucks for Christian, at least they used the injury to push Del Rio, who they have been doing well with thus far. If they want, they also have a perfect return program for Christian, which is always nice. But again, this is a very bad thing for the overall product. While he isn’t at the level of a Chris Jericho, due to Vince not having the faith in him, Christian has been such a great performer for years. He had a great run in TNA, and when he came back, his efforts on ECW were always great, and I feel that he really helped the progression of Jack Swagger. While he isn’t the superstar Chris Jericho is, the simple fact is that Christian has been a valuable part of the roster. He can and has worked with anyone, and he is a big enough star in the eyes of the people that he gets the superstar reaction, his wins are easily believable, and when a young up and comer wins, it seems like a big deal. Losing Christian for up to six months is a blow to the quality of wrestling on TV, and a blow to the mid-card evolution, because he was there to do a job, quite literally, and did it well. The worst part is that they really don’t have anyone to fill the role. Matt Hardy is insane, Regal has been jobbed to hell and back, and Goldust is on Raw. Hopefully they move him, because he could do some good in Christian’s absence.

RANKINGTO TWEET OR NOT TO TWEET…THAT IS THE QUESTION: And now, a discussion of social networking and the wrestling business. Now truth be told, I ado not have a problem with the whole social networking deal. Because of 411, I have a Facebook and Twitter, and it allows me to talk with friends, family, the staff, MMA fighters, wrestlers and you the reader. It is a valuable tool, and yes, it is fun. Hell the MMA staff has a blast during PPVs over on Twitter. Wrestlers and MMA fighters also use this social networking tool, they use it to interact with fans, they use it to promote themselves and many of it use it responsibly. But over the past few weeks, it seems to me that some of these guys take it way too seriously and or need to get away from it. First of all you have Hulk Hogan. Hogan gets on Twitter and posts videos from the hospital all pilled up and acting like an ass. Listen up BROTHER, you still have a large legion of fans that love and respect you, stop making an ass out of yourself. Next is Matt Hardy. Hardy is using twitter to work his fan base, which in my opinion is a mistake. Why would he work the people that got him his job back and blindly support him? Because he is a mark, for himself. Finally there is Chris Jericho. Until recently Jericho has been chill on his Twitter, but then went on a little tirade against the fan base. Now don’t get me wrong, I generally agree with what he has to say, and I myself have been saying the same thing for years. But the fact that it got to him so badly that he felt that he had to lash out against everyone came off as a bit sad to me. You’re better than that Chris, back off the Twitter, and calm down.

RANKINGWHY SO SERIOUS?: And now it is time to SERIOUS, because this is the stuff that upsets the kids. I thought that this would be a good time to update the year-end Csonka ratings. If there is a match NOT on the list from TV and or PPV, and enough people agree, I will gladly go back and rewatch it to see if it deserves to be added. That doesn’t mean that I WILL add it, but I will gladly rewatch something. Check out the latest rankings, which are highly non-official and final, which means they can’t be argued against, just like the PWI 500…

I have finally caught up on all PPV for the year, as well as have caught up on all ROH TV. So we have many additions to the rankings, especially TV matches.
