The CHIKARA Special 10.09.10: So It’s Come To This

October 9, 2010 | Posted by Kevin Ford

Welcome back to the CHIKARA Special! This is a long one, so I’ll save you another frivolous opening. Let’s go!

The major story for CHIKARA in 2010 has been the Bruderschaft des Kreuzes’ war against everyone else in the company. A now nine-person juggernaut, the BDK have left a path of destruction on their way to complete domination of the company. Currently the BDK have the Director of Fun wrapped around their finger, a ring announcer specifically designated to do their ring introductions in German, and a partial referee assigned to certain matches. This doesn’t seem too far off from total domination does it? Luckily for CHIKARA, the Board of Directors is under investigation to check the legitimacy of BDK official Derek Sabato and BDK Director of Fun Dieter VonSteigerwalt. Judging by the Baltimore and Brooklyn events in September, the cracks are starting to break for the BDK as well. First, the group failed to win the Young Lions Cup tournament, putting the Cup back in the hands of the CHIKARA Sekigun. Second, while Claudio Castagnoli and Ares retained their Campeonatos de Parejas against 3.0, 3.0 were able to score a fall against them, the first time that has happened since Claudio and Ares won the titles. Finally, the BDK lost the vast majority of matches they had over that weekend, only winning 3 of the 10 matches that involved BDK members. The time could not be more perfect for CHIKARA to challenge the BDK in a Cibernetico match.

But, how did we get to this point? Let’s hope back in our Lance Steel time machine and start from the very beginning of this long tale…

The story of the 2010 Cibernetico – CHIKARA vs. The BDK

Ultramantis Black, one of the five original graduates of the CHIKARA Wrestle Factory, is absolutely hell bent on taking over CHIKARA (if not the World). Ever since he turned on his partner Mr. ZERO in 2004, Mantis has done his best to carry an army to serve him and help him reach his goal of ultimate domination. First it was Hallowicked and Blind Rage in the Dark Breed, then Hydra and Crossbones (and for a short time, Tim Donst) in the Order of the Neo-Solar Temple. It seemed though, no matter who Ultramantis was able to recruit, he never truly came close to his goal of becoming the overlord of CHIKARA. The other issue being the quality of recruits. Sure, it’s not like Mantis had terrible people by his side, but those who are (or were) the cream of the crop in CHIKARA usually wanted nothing to do with the Evil Insect Overlord. Perhaps it would take some nefarious tactics to get certain people to join his group.

The ball was set in motion back in 2007. We first caught wind of something shady back at “Cibernetico & Robin”. Right before the 2007 Cibernetico bout, the mega Kings of Wrestling stable informed the then Director of Fun Leonard F. Chikarason that they had inked new deals before the Cibernetico, negotiating personal gains for each member (i.e. Chuck Taylor getting a Playstation 3, or something wacky like that). Most fans thought nothing of it at the time, other than a convenient moment for Claudio to leverage his way out of the Kings of Wrestling since he was in the group against his will. It was only later we found out something was up.

As it turned out, Ultramantis Black had heard of a mystical object known as “The Eye of Tyr”, which essentially has the ability to brainwash whomever is the target of the Eye to be under the control of the Eye’s possessor. This was exactly the kind of item Mantis needed to recruit somebody to join his army and help him achieve his overall goal of domination. But first, he had to figure out where and who had the Eye. It turns out the Eye is a Swiss artifact, and Kaiju Big Battel minion Dr. Cube knew which wealthy Swiss collector possessed the Eye. Cube was willing to give Mantis the name of the Swiss collector who possessed the Eye of Tyr if Mantis would teach Dr. Cube the reversal the CHIKARA Special. The CHIKARA Special is a submission move invented by Mike Quackenbush in order to thwart his arch-rival Chris Hero. This move became Hero’s kryptonite, as Hero could not figure out a counter and was forced to submit to the hold no matter who applied it. Quack taught the reversal to the Tecnicos so that they could beat Hero with the move, but also escape were a Rudo to apply it. Mantis (a Rudo) came to learn the move because the desperate Tecnico Shane Storm shared the reversal with him in exchange for Mantis’ minion Hydra to lose a match for Storm, just so Storm could get a much needed ‘W’ back in his name.

This is how the Cibernetico & Robin event comes into play. The new deal for the Kings of Wrestling was penned while Chris Hero was blackmailing then Commissioner Bob Saget, as Hero knew of some “shady back alley dealings” in which Saget was involved. Hero also knew that Saget somehow knew how to break the CHIKARA Special, and Saget bought Hero’s silence by giving him that information. What Hero did not know, was that Saget obtained that information by trading Hero’s contract to Dr. Cube. Soon enough, Commissioner Saget was impeached and Hero was out of CHIKARA, leaving Mantis with the motive, means, and opportunity to go and take the Eye. Sure enough, he did.

After Pinkie Sanchez and Sami Callihan failed their “audition” to join the Order of the Neo-Solar Temple, Mantis had his sights set on one wrestler in particular: Delirious. You see, Mantis and Hallowicked (another Wrestle Factory original) had been partners and friends since 2004. At Tag World Grand Prix 2006, an injury kept Mantis from competing in the tournament with Hallowicked, so Hallowicked was forced to team with a partner drawn at random. That partner would turn out to be Delirious. Delirious and Hallowicked were such a great team (making it all the way to the semi-finals) that they decided to continue teaming into perpetuity, meaning Mantis was left by his lonesome. Years later, Mantis finally could recruit the person who destroyed his and Hallowicked’s partnership to screw over Hallowicked, while also recruiting a worthwhile ally. So with that, Mantis used the Eye of Tyr to put Delirious under his control and make him apart of Mantis’ Order of the Neo-Solar Temple group. Delirious was the best thing to happen to the Order, as he would quickly rack up wins for the team and even won a Campeones de Parejas shot with Mantis.

Something happened to Mantis in 2009 though. A man in all white began appearing on the monitor at shows, asking Mantis to return the Eye back to him. Mantis of course refused, so over the next few months, the man in white (and then a second, larger man in white) would actually appear at the shows looking for Mantis. Things came to a head at the 2009 season finale, when the BDK formed. The men in white turned out to be Ares (who’s family was the one who originally possessed the Eye of Tyr) and Tursas (Ares’ henchman). Ares’ long time comrade Claudio Castagnoli also joined, uppercutting his fellow trainer Mike Quackenbush right in front of the CHIKARA roster and fans. These three men were the head of the then seven-person group. Rounding out the group were Pinkie Sanchez, who went under the guise as Carpenter Ant for the better part of 2009. After being rejected by the locker room, and by the Order of the Neo-Solar Temple, Sanchez decided to shove things in their face by joining the BDK. Also aligned with the BDK were female competitors Sara Del Rey and Daizee Haze (lovingly known as “Death Haze” when together). Sick of not being taken seriously, or not given what they felt was “real” competition, Death Haze joined the BDK with their attitude being “if you won’t give us competition, we’ll make you our competition.” The final member was Tim Donst, who went under the guise of “Vokoder”, a “robot” who Mantis found solace in. In fact, Vokoder was given the Eye of Tyr for safe-keeping. Donst of course, who had been rejected by the fans as well, joined the BDK and gave the Eye back to Ares.

Donst brought something else valuable to the BDK aside from the Eye of Tyr. Before turning on CHIKARA, Donst and his then partner Hydra were on a bit of a losing streak. Donst just seemed unable to score any big victories. Fed up, he turned on his partner Hydra, a move that did not sit well with the Tecnicos or the fans. However, Donst’s trainer Mike Quackenbush assessed Donst’s predicament and decided to teach Donst an inverted variation of the CHIKARA Special. Donst was the only person Quack had taught this move. So, how the heck did Carpenter Ant learn the move and win the Cibernetico with it? Once the BDK was revealed, we had our answer: Donst had taught the Inverted CHIKARA Special to the entire BDK group. It’s the move that has helped them earn so many of their victories, such as Donst winning the Young Lions Cup and a few falls in Claudio and Ares’ Campeones de Parejas defenses. It was also revealed by Quack before the Colony took on the BDK in the finals of this years King of Trios tournament that the Inverted CHIKARA Special had NO counter to it (unlike the original CHIKARA Special). While Quack could teach everyone on the roster the Inverted CHIKARA Special as well, there was no counter to help thwart the BDK.

The BDK reigned supreme for most of 2010. As noted above, Tim Donst won the Young Lions Cup in January and held it all the way up to this year’s Young Lions Cup tournament in late August. Claudio Castagnoli and Ares have been the Campeones de Parejas since March, defeating every team in their path along the way. Claudio, Ares, and Tursas also won the King of Trios tournament with the help of their very own referee, Derek Sabato. In addition to winning all the CHIKARA gold, the other BDK members would decimate other CHIKARA regulars from show to show and do their best to neutralize any potential threats to either the Campeonatos de Parejas or the Young Lions Cup. They would even take down outsiders such as wrestlers from F1RST Wrestling, Perros del Mal, Big Japan Wrestling, ECW legend Tommy Dreamer, and the female duo of Amazing Kong and Raisha Saeed. No doubt about it, the BDK was unstoppable.

But what about the Eye of Tyr? When the 2010 season began, life was but a dream for Ultramantis Black. While he may not have the Eye of Tyr any longer, he had his loyal companions Crossbones and Delirious by his side, and a shot at the Campeonatos de Parejas with Delirious against then Campeones The Colony. During that title match however, Ares emerged with the Eye of Tyr and held it in Delirious’ face (at this point, Delirious was still under the Eye’s control). One whisper from Ares was all it took for Delirious to go ballistic and run out of the building. Of course, Mantis lost the match. Not only that, but since Mantis’ group was back down to a twosome, Mantis also lost his spot in the 2010 King of Trios tournament. Delirious would go missing for months until Aniversario Zehn. Mantis finally had a singles match with Ares that night and was dying to get his hands on him. Ares went to the back and brought out Delirious, who was now sporting an all white outfit and was tied to a chain much like a dog on a leash. Just to show his control, Ares had Delirious attack Crossbones who was seconding Mantis in the match. Delirious ended up breaking Crossbones’ clavical, and Crossbones is no longer in CHIKARA because of it. Now Mantis was all alone against the nine man BDK army…or was he?

Eddie Kingston is another man who has had his issues with the BDK. Namely, Claudio Castagnoli. Kingston’s disliking for Claudio stems from his partnership with Chris Hero, Kingston’s perennial rival throughout the independent wrestling scene. Kingston and Claudio had a series of matches in 2009, culminating with a “Respect Match” the same night that the BDK formed. The rules of the match were that the loser would be forced to tell the winner that they respected them. Kingston lost, but refused to tell Claudio he respected him. Kingston said Claudio was a shady person and knew he was up to something. Kingston would save the day (or at least attempt to) when he joined up with Quackenbush, Equinox, and Jigsaw in an 8 man tag team match which saw Lince Dorado turn on his fellow stablemates and friends to join the BDK. Kingston came in to take Dorado’s spot, but ultimately got pinned after a low blow from Claudio. Kingston made it his personal quest to take out the BDK one by one, eventually getting to Claudio. Kingston so far has faced Tursas, Lince Dorado, Delirious, Pinkie Sanchez, and Ares in singles matches and has a match with Tim Donst coming up the day after the Cibernetico. Kingston unfortunately has lost the majority of these matches (only defeating Sanchez and Delirious) because of outside interference or other shenanigans involving the BDK. Kingston has also had a few tussles with Claudio along the way, though Claudio has avoided another singles confrontation with the King of Diamonds since their November encounter. It seems as if that will be the final step for Kingston, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

So with the Cibernetico event set in stone, and Ultramantis Black as the captain, it was up to him to put together an all-star CHIKARA team to vanquish the BDK. Mantis seems to have an overarching theme for his team: “Gen 1” CHIKARA guys. This is not limited to guys who were only in the first class, but guys who have been around in CHIKARA for years and years and would therefore have the most emotional investment when joining Mantis’ cause. The recruiting can be tracked through the blogs on CHIKARA’s website. Mantis first put out a blog asking for those who wanted to join his team to step forward and volunteer.

7/23/2010: The time has come for a day most of us could never imagine.

The time has come to put aside the ideological differences and petty squabbles of the past.

The time has come to stand shoulder to shoulder. And back to back. To fight for our collective legacy.

The time has come for a call to arms.

For months now, I have seen the faces of the fans of CHIKARA. I’ve looked into their eyes and seen the disgust and the anger. Just like myself, and the rest of the CHIKARA locker room, they have grown increasingly incensed by the actions of the BDK. They have watched as these infidels have disrespected our traditions, defiled the pride and honor of our organization, and taken our collective destinies on an unwanted detour to satisfy their own selfish whims. They have waited for someone to eradicate the BDK and return CHIKARA to its former resplendency. They have waited for a liberator. A redeemer. A savior. Who will be the one individual to save CHIKARA?

And the answer is – none of us. Who among us can overcome the Bruderschaft as a whole? Tommy Dreamer? Da Soul Touchaz? This is not their war…it is ours. Alone, we have been helpless. Defeated at every turn. But together, we can be unstoppable. We must work together – fight together – to win this war. It is the ONLY way.

A Cibernetico has emerged on our horizon. A Dark Ciberknetico. At the Cibernetico, I will lead the charge. But I will need 7 warriors to stand beside me. The BDK has dismantled my own army…my Neo Solar Temple. So I will rebuild an army. An army without borders. An army fighting not for glory, fame, or gold. An army that will only declare victory when we have finally liberated CHIKARA itself.

And so I aim this call to arms at a select few. To those who – I know – this BDK infiltration strikes at the very hearts of. To those who built CHIKARA. To those who have fought, fallen, and risen up to fight again – month after month and year after year. To those warriors of CHIKARA’s original generation. I know the rage that has been boiling up inside each of you and I know that you cannot stand idly by much longer. No more egos, no more factions, and no more division. We must unite.

The time has come…
UMB

It took a few weeks, but the first response came from Mike Quackenbush, head trainer of the Wrestle Factory and co-founder of CHIKARA as a whole.

8/11/2010: I hate to admit it, but you’re right, Mantis. Thus far, the Bruderschaft has run roughshod over CHIKARA, and we haven’t been able to turn the tables on them for more than a moment’s time.

We are fractured into tecnicos and rudos, and from there, divided up into groups and teams that individually, are all strong. But we’re not an army, not like the BDK. They’ve got nine warriors, and enough peons in their entourage to make sure the deck is always stacked against us. And fractured as our roster is…well, we haven’t stood a chance.

You and I were there, before you tacked a “Black” onto your name, back where it all began. A ragtag group of independent wrestlers trying to shake up the status quo and forge a new path. In those first few years, nobody even knew we existed. CHIKARA wasn’t a blip on any radar. But for better or worse, we all stuck together, and look where we are today. Through staying power and sheer force of will, this tiny little organization has blossomed and claimed an influence that is felt throughout the entire wrestling world.

Do you think this Bruderschaft can really undo what we have done? Eradicate the legacy we make stronger with each passing day? I don’t know. And I don’t care to find out.

You’ve asked for CHIKARA’s original generation to rally to the call. Together, we’ve accomplished an incredible amount since 2002, and together, we’re going to send the BDK packing.

I don’t trust you, Mantis, but maybe that doesn’t really matter anymore. We’re past the point of assigning blame and petty differences.

Count me in for Easton. I’ve got your back.
MQ

Next up was Eddie Kingston, who as previously mentioned is one of the main antagonist’s of the BDK, who threw his name into Mantis’ hat of Cibernetico partners.

8/18/2010: ‘Sup chikarapro.com? Last of a dying breed, Eddie Kingston here. I’m gonna keep this short and sweet.

The talk going around right now is that UltraMantis wants to gather together a team of CHIKARA originals to take on the BDK. I’ve always been the lone wolf of the CHIKARA pack, always will be. You and I have never seen eye to eye, Mantis, that’s a fact. But you need some help now, now you come calling?

I don’t care about you or your crusade, Mantis. But CHIKARA…it’s a different story. A company built on my sweat? That’s something real.

Me? I don’t need an excuse. I want Claudio in the ring, no distractions, no excuses. And if I have to cut down every single one of his goons to get to him, I will. Just watch. And everyone else coming for the fight in Easton – we might be teammates at the Cibernetico, but stay out of my way.

Holla.
EK

With Mike Quackenbush in line, it was only a matter of time before his partner Jigsaw followed suit.

8/31/2010: It seems like everyday now there’s a new blog poping up on chikarapro.com. With Young Lions Cup fever and our Maryland and New York debuts, that’s no surprise. Among all these blogs though, one stuck out to me…that’s the one by my good friend Quack.

Ya see, in Quack’s blog he stated that he’ll be joining up with UltraMantis Black for this year’s Cibernetico. Mike, you know I don’t trust this guy and it’s because of him that CHIKARA’s in the current mess with the BDK. But if you’re in for the fight, you know I’ve got your back, even if that means teaming with Mantis. So sign me up for the squad. On October 23rd in Easton, we bring an end to the BDK – but it’s going to take all of us, the originals.

So I say this to the rest of the CHIKARA locker room…rudo and tecnico. It’s time for us to stand up and shut ’em down. To the guys that have been here since day one – the guys that helped build this company into what it is today – I say we follow Quack’s lead and put our grudges aside to end the war the BDK has brought.

JIG

Ultramantis Black posted another blog addressing a few points. First, he informs us that he has added STIGMA to his team. Second, he actually denied Eddie Kingston a spot on his squad. Finally, he uses the blog to invite Hallowicked onto the team.

9/10/2010: Greetings again to you, my loyal followers. I do hope that the waning solar term and approaching autumnal Harvest Tide are treating you well. But enough of these needless niceties. I am here today to further address concerns regarding the roster of my Cibernetico battalion.

Firstly, I have taken it upon myself to ascertain the services of the UnStable’s STIGMA. I am sure some people, namely Mike Quackenbush, will object to this selection. It is no secret that the UnStable has long been viewed in a somewhat unfavorable light in the CHIKARA locker room. Maybe with just cause. However, if you peel away the layers of STIGMA you will find the man once known as Shane Storm at its core. A man who knows that everything he has ever accomplished, won, or created has been rooted in the foundations of CHIKARA. A man who will put aside his current allegiances for at least one day in order to lend his might to our mission of ousting the BDK. I have done business with this man in the past, and he will honor his commitment.

In addition, I would just like to comment that I do not feel at all comfortable with Eddie Kingston and his “gracious” offer to volunteer his services for this Cibernetico team. It is my opinion that this man cannot be trusted and lacks the dedication, stability and loyalty that are needed to defeat the Bruderschaft. I for one would not want a loose cannon amok on this battleground, and I’m sure the others that have pledged their support feel much as I do.

Finally, as he has yet to respond to any of my personal communiques, I would like to take the opportunity to address Hallowicked directly in this public forum. You know as well as I do, Hallowicked, that our history together has been plagued by bitterness, bloodlust, and despair. But never forget – we were born into CHIKARA together. No one shall ever be able to sever that cord – not even the BDK. You know what you have to do. Ignore me for now, if you think you must, but we will meet face-to-face in New York soon enough…

UMB

After this blog, Mantis defeated Hallowicked in a singles match at CHIKARA’s Brooklyn debut on September 19th. Mantis publicly propositioned him after this match, but Hallowicked walked away without giving Mantis an answer. Mantis again posted a blog, asking a fellow partner for a favor.

9/28/2010: Hallowicked is one very stubborn man. I have repeatedly reached out to him. I have pleaded with him. I have tried reasoning with him in every conceivable way I know how. Yet he has ignored me at every turn. Frankly, I am at my wit’s end.

That is why I am appealing directly to Mike Quackenbush himself. There are very few people in this world who have been able to make any sort of connection with Hallowicked – Mike Quackenbush is one of them. Mr. Mike, you know just as well as I the importance of assembling the perfect Cibernetico team. In my eyes, this team will be incomplete with the absence of an Original. The first Young Lions Cup champion…my former partner, Hallowicked. If CHIKARA truly means as much to you as you say it does, then I implore you to use your influence to secure the services of this dark warrior.

One by one, I have been meticulously recruiting warriors for my Cibernetico battalion – Quackenbush and Jigsaw, STIGMA, and my latest acquisition – Icarus. A man not easily swayed. But in the end, even Icarus realizes the sheer magnitude of what is at stake on October the 23rd in Easton, Pennsylvania. It will be up to you, Quackenbush, to make Hallowicked see the righteousness of our cause.

I will not rest until our army is complete. I will not be satisfied until we are prepared for war.

Juntos lucharemos hasta la victoria.
UMB

So as you read, Icarus was also added to the Cibernetico team. Quackenbush gave UMB an ultimatum in response to his request:

10/5/2010: Mantis, you think Hallowicked is “one very stubborn man”, huh? The way I see it, you’re the stubborn one here. In our hour of need, you’re refusing the help of Eddie Kingston? You’re going to turn down the hardest-hitter on our entire roster because you think he’s a “loose cannon?”

Let me give you some advice, from a past Cibernetico captain to an upcoming Cibernetico captain. You’d don’t have to micro-manage an all-star team. Write down the names of the 7 wrestlers that will give everything to overcome your adversaries, and put them in a batting order. That’s all you need to do. You do your part – your squad will do the rest. If you’re worried that we might clean house on the BDK and it might come down to the original generation of CHIKARA stars facing each other in the end, don’t freak out about that. Only one person can win the Cibernetico. Maybe Eddie will end up giving you a backfist before the night is over. Maybe he’ll try to backfist me, too. But you can be sure that’s not going to go down until after every single member of the opposing team has been broken and beaten.

I’ve teamed with Hallowicked in all kinds of matches over the years – we’ve even held a few tag team titles together, outside of CHIKARA. I’m proud to tell people that I trained him…because he exemplifies what CHIKARA is all about, in spirit and in execution. Like you, I think this team needs him, but I also know our team needs Eddie Kingston. There’s only so many of us “Gen 1” types around anymore. The Allentown Boys, as they say. So you’ve signed up complete jerks like Icarus or wastes-of-oxygen like STIGMA. Good for you. Can’t wait to see their mugs on the same side of the ring as Jigsaw and I come October 23rd. Can’t. Wait.

So, let this marinate a bit. I’ll talk to Hallowicked. He’ll listen to me. But it’s no easy chore to ask a man to ignore all those years of history and hatred – all that bad blood that dates back to the Dark Breed. So, if you want me to bring him to the fight in Easton, you better put Kingston’s name on your list as well. That’s the deal. You want Hallowicked? You’re going to have take Kingston to get him.

Don’t think about it too long.
LMQ

And this is where we stand today. The CHIKARA team will be captained by Ultramantis Black, with teammates Mike Quackenbush, Jigsaw, STIGMA, and Icarus. Three spots remain open, with two of three likely being occupied by Hallowicked and Eddie Kingston. The third remains shrouded in mystery, but it’s not as if there isn’t reasonable speculation to who will get that spot *cough* Vokoder *cough*

The BDK team is also set. If you recall, Cibernetico teams are 8 people deep while the BDK group is 9 people. Lince Dorado is the unfortunate BDK member who was left on the outskirts. This is probably because Lince lost the Young Lions Cup tournament and both of his matches during the Baltimore/Brooklyn weekend. However, he is given a shot at redemption that night as he will take on currently Young Lions Cup champion Frightmare for the Cup. We’ll talk about that more next week when we talk about the rest of the Cibernetico card.

So that’s the story of this years Cibernetico. It’s long, convoluted, but it’s also such a rewarding story to follow for long time CHIKARA fans. I for one am stoked for this match, and anxiously await for the event to occur so we can see what intricacies CHIKARA includes in this match. Who pins who and who does what definitely matters, and it will be fun to see the fallout of this match and the other events of that weekend.
