The Wrestling 5 & 1 1.7.12: Kaitlyn Versus Sunny!

January 7, 2012 | Posted by Greg De Marco

Busy week this week. Personally, I was active I writing the 5&1, covering Impact Wrestling, coordinating the TNA Genesis Roundtable and more! I also had a big week on The Greg DeMarco Show, with a 3-hour broadcast on Tuesday night, as well as an hour taping the Rain interview on Monday. Oh, and I worked a full week, too! Real jobs…the method for us to do the things we really love to do! That’s why it’s always great to upload another edition of The Wrestling 5&1 for you all to read, enjoy and comment on.

Due to time constraints, we have very limited comment responses this week. But we did have some really quality commenters, and I wanted to show them some love. But first, always remember one thing:

Enjoy!

You know why WWE will never push a diva division built around women that are hot AND can wrestle? Because “hot” isn’t good enough. They want to promote girls that are drop dead gorgeous. And let’s be honest, there has never been a woman that was really beautiful and great in the ring. It’s always been one or the other.

Also, they won’t push any diva too much because they all quit once they reach a certain level of fame (Sable, Trish, Stacy, etc.)

I would normally disagree with you, until I did the interview with Rain this past week. Her discussion about plastic surgery in both the WWE and TNA was eye opening. Not just breast augmentation, but Botox, collagen and more. She even admitted that she herself had Botox and collagen off air—and she was already a 10!

I definitely hope Impact is headed in the right direction. I’ll be holding my breath until after Genesis, because I know some idiot will be campaigning for Hardy because of all the merchandise they could sell. If cooler heads prevail, and Roode dispatches Hardy, then we should be in for a good time with a Roode – Storm feud for the belt. If they continue to keep AJ, Morgan, and Joe strong, things could definitely be looking up. And yes, I agree that Bully Ray could be a good transitional champ at some point. I’d like to see Aries stay with the X a while longer, really help rebuild that division. Let’s also hope that they remember to get Velvet back on my TV soon. It seems that’s another build they’ve just thrown away.

Keep watching ghost (and keep reading my live recaps!). Things really seem to be turning around.

Love the column, I can’t remember off the top of my head, but were you doing the 5&1 in 2010? I’m asking because I’m curious what your 2011 predictions were, I like seeing stuff like that, what you got right, got wrong etc.

You know what Darth, you made me go back and check. And it turns out I didn’t do any! But we’ll be able to track them this year.

The injuries aren’t all that surprising. Women, unlike their male counterparts, are pressured into being skinnier without the bulk of a lot of muscles. Without sufficient muscle fiber strength, joints have less support and are more prone to injuries. In Madison Eagles case, as was mentioned earlier, she tends to be genetically skinnier anyway.

In Lufisto’s case, one thing that kind of jumps out is that she has been a pretty hardcore wrestler over her career. I think her matches have finally caught up with her.

As for Sereena Deeb, I watched her match against Madison Eagles for the Shimmer title and one thing that kind of stuck out was that she is not that great at taking bumps. I think she ended up taking a lot of unnecessary head trauma because of it.

On the gender side, its hard to say whether or not women are impacted more negatively over the course of their careers. Looking at female wrestlers in Japan, there are quite a few older stars that have managed to stay healthy throughout their careers. Hard to say but pretty interesting topic.

You’re right on all accounts. Alli can say is good job!

Except for the fact that Daniel Bryan did it before Jericho did. Or did that not count? So it counts when the WWE steals some of ROH’s angles, but not all of them?

You’re also ignoring that Jericho borrowed some other aspects from Bryan’s heel act. The “I have till 5, ref!!!” bit was something Bryan was doing way back in ’05/’06, two years before Jericho started doing it. In fact, a lot of the heel tactics he started using were cribbed from Bryan’s book. I think Jericho made it his own but the dude claiming that Punk and Bryan ripped him off is fucking stupid. Do some basic research.

Posted By: Guest#5964

I really hope Daniel Bryan brings back some aspects of his ROH character. It will be hard because he was dominant there.

PWG’s crowds have shrunk from when they had a larger tourin circuit. They are not drawing what they used to.

You can “believe” all you want that it’s a better product and they’d be successful if they toured more and had more shows, but those are opinions. Opinions and facts are not the same. And what I presented were facts. I think I’ve proven my point.

Posted By: Jed (Guest)

You obviously have no idea what the hell you’re talking about.

1. PWG never toured. They’ve always done shows in SoCal. Thats it.

2. Since 2009 PWG has been drawing larger crowds than ever before. If you don’t believe me, check out their show “Pearl Habra” from 2008. That show was ran in the venue they run all their shows in now. Compare that crowd to the crowd from pretty much any show in 2009 – 2011 (except the WrestleReunion shows) and you’re see theres CLEARLY a hell of a lot more people in the crowd.

Basically, I posted this as an example of when I don’t need to respond. Readers do it for me.

Rock was good for the E like you said he boosted ratings and gave people a reason to be intrested in a Cena feud.

As far as womens wrestling it is both a part of the game & they are risking theeir health to prove they are more then eyecandy. As a wrestler injuries occur but sometimes those injuries can be avoided. You mentioned Rock & cena being over because they can perform BUT they connect with the crowd. An women who wreslte need to Learn how to get that huge crowd following an connection like cena and the rock. Especially if they have the look and decent if not above average ability. They need to work on connecting with the fans.

I think your predictions are spot on. For the most part. I see Dolph becomming a major player in the title scene as well as christian again. Drew macntire(I know I butchered his name but ehh) sin cara,Karma will be released as well as a few others.

TNA as a whole disapoints me but there are certain wrestlers that I find entertaining and can put on a show. Or have potential. Rood,Styles, are stand outs. Samoa joe is pretty good as well as danials but his age holds him back. Those are the people i’d take and place in the E.

I see morrison returning after a small stint in TNA or just making a return in the middle of the year, to feud. With a cody rhodes or miz. I think those would be good matches.

Taker & triple H at mania wouldn’t be to bad of a match,if they shorten it that means cut out the long intros. An all the extrra things un needed. And if they don’t go againt each other then i’d put each againt up & commer. Dolph vs taker an rhodes against Triple H if built right .

Keep watching TNA, they’re turning it around. I could see Morrison in TNA as well, but I think he returns to the WWE in the late fall.

Way to ring in the New Year with a ton of great content, Greg.

5-I caught myself grinning just about every time Rock spoke on WWE TV this year, so for this mark, his return was worth it. He also gave Cena something to do other than hang around the RAW title scene, clearing the way for ADR and CM Punk to get a chance there and, along with Punk, forced the issue of the mixed reactions that John gets, which might make creative do something interesting with his character for the 1st time in at least five years. So, yeah, that’s a good impact.

2-I missed that news about Eagles. Bummer. I don’t have an answer about if these women take more risks to overcome stigma created by gender in general and Diva/Knockout stereotypes, but it seems logical that they might – and I look forward to hearing what some of your contacts in the business think. Commenter PK brings up a really good point about the female physique and weight pressure possibly being contributing factors, too. Anecdotally there don’t seem to be more injuries to women than men at any level of wrestling, but the %s are hard to gauge given that there have to be 2-3 times as many male workers. This should be an interesting and important conversation.

1-I like all of your WWE predictions, and especially hope you’re right about Christian (who deserves it and proved he can be entertaining as a heel on the losing side of a main event feud) and Ambrose/Rollins (been a big fan of Moxley for a couple of years and think he can carve a niche for himself in the WWE fairly quickly. I hadn’t thought about an odd couple tag team for the two, but think it’s a strong idea – and would mean that the WWE tag team division was continuing its rebirth into 2012).

As for RoH, I tend to agree with you that something is rotten in Denmark re: Hero-to-WWE, and I hope he does land back in RoH. He could bring some much needed variety to their roster and really flourish as a singles star. Along those same lines, the prediction you’re missing in that section is the permanent placement of Kevin Steen into the RoH main event mix. The title trio of Edwards, Strong and Richards is badly in need of some spice, and Steen – like Hero – is a guy who can get a fighting character over with the RoH crowds and still work a strong-style match. The most interesting storytelling RoH has done in the last two years has centered around STEEN, and it’s time they put his skills in their biggest spotlight.

VS-great new HoB graphic. I’ve long loved Mickie, and the only part of Impact I caught last week was spent thinking “yum” during the main event. But this match-up is forcing me to realize how bad my Kaitlyn problem is…she gets my vote, and really needs to be on my TV screen a lot more, pronto.

Great job this week. In fact…

Last weekend the world saw Brock Lesnar get completely dismantled by Alastair Overeem, losing in less than three minutes in a title eliminator for a shot at UFC World Heavyweight Champion Junio Dos Santos. That outcome wasn’t the big surprise of the night, however.

This immediately fueled speculation that Lesnar would return to the WWE, possibly as the 1-2-12 Mystery Man. We now know that it was in fact Chris Jericho. But there are a few points that lead one to believe Brock will in fact return to the WWE.

1 – Brock Lesnar’s retirement doesn’t seem to be a huge surprise to many within the UFC. Dana White has said he isn’t surprised by the announcement, although he says he didn’t know in advance of the former champion’s revelation. Joe Rogan—a man who typically gives a great genuine reaction to everything—immediately moved on to Brock’s legacy. Not the reaction you expect from someone not in the know. We also spoke with Michael Jenkin of MMAinterviews.tv in this week’s Greg DeMarco Show, and he shared the same opinion—this announcement was already in the works behind the scenes had Brock lost. And he did just that.

2 – Brock himself has said he can return to the WWE. Mere days before the fight, he said that wrestling will “always be there,” thus it’s always an option for him. Now he did retire from the UFC under contract, so there is a hurdle in place for a quick WWE return. But Dana White is a fan of making money, and a retired Brock Lesnar isn’t going to make any money. The money to be made with Lesnar is in the WWE, and I’m 100% confident that both sides could easily come up with a fair deal.

But will Brock Lesnar return to the WWE in 2012? I think the answer here is simply Yes. Brock will definitely take some time off, and he won’t be in a WWE ring for the Royal Rumble or WrestleMania. In fact, I don’t think he’ll wrestle before 2013’s WrestleMania 29. But he will return, in a non-wrestling capacity, in 2012.

How do you bring Brock back? I think the WWE is in a great position here. They can say and do absolutely nothing regarding Brock until the months after WrestleMania. For two weeks, they can promote that Brock Lesnar will discuss his future on RAW, and when that Monday comes, Lesnar can address the WWE fans (likely via satellite) to indicate that he is retired not only from MMA, but from the WWE as well. He’s excited to be under a legends contract, and looks forward to signing autographs and thanking fans in the coming months and years. In the weeks that follow, a bigger heel can start to mention Lesnar in promos. Just in passing, not as a central focus. Someone like Wade Barrett—he can point out that people are wasting their time worrying about Brock, when they should be focused on him.

No response from Brock, other than a Tweet or two wishing Barrett the best and reminding everyone that he’s retired. However, at Survivor Series, Brock can make a surprise return, attacking Barrett with an F5, then leaving. In the weeks that follow, Lesnar can say he already responded to Barrett’s comments, and he is remaining retired from active competition. Then, the big return comes at the 2013 Royal Rumble, when Barrett is all alone in the ring, having eliminated everyone before him (about 1/3 of the way through the match). He waits for another opponent, when Brock’s music hits and he enters. Brock eliminates Barrett, then himself, in a surprise move that leaves the ring completely empty (for about 30 seconds).

The road to WrestleMania 29 then sees Barrett call out Brock, find Rena “Sable” Mero in a public place and try to assault her, and do everything he can to get Brock to come back. Brock eventually returns at Elimination Chamber, and Brock Lesnar vs. Wade Barrett is booked for WM29.

That’s how you tell a story!

You Decide: When does Brock return to the WWE?

As we know now, the mystery man in these videos was in fact not Brock Lesnar…

The mystery man was, of course, Chris Jericho. The fans in the arena knew it, the fans watching around the world knew it, pretty much everyone knew it. Jericho tried to create some doubt early, but even he himself started to have fun with the story, posting photoshopped pictures of himself around the world before RAW went on the air.

But in the end, it was Chris Jericho who made a return to the WWE…

I couldn’t stand the earthquake effect in the arena—that was stupid. And the night of the return, I wasn’t a happy fan. The pop wasn’t what we would have expected—nor were the ratings—and it dragged on are too long. I “got it” from the first awkward “he’s not talking” moment, because I never expected Jericho to be a face during this run. He left as a heel, and I expect him to return as one. But in the 24 hours that passed, my mind was easily changed. It all started with my Greg DeMarco Show co-host Patrick O’Dowd responding to my texts with the following: “You know better. Get your head out of your ass!” this is a story, not a one night return. O’Dowd—along with Steve Cook—see Jericho pulling the same stunt through the Royal Rumble. I don’t think it will go that long—the first return didn’t pop a big rating. The rest wouldn’t either. The money is in the explanation. What is he up to? Why did he return that way?

It seems obvious that Jericho is playing the fans as puppets. And he’s succeeding. His actual revelation will no doubt be entertaining, and the expected feud with CM Punk will be off the charts. The heat those two could generate will be awesome. CM Punk has preached giving the fans what they want for months. Jericho did just that, and people complained. He’ll point out that the fans don’t know what they want, and he’s there to show them that. CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 28 could steal the show, and despite what we thought of his return.

Looking back, it was a brilliant move. It’s suffering from the Bound For Glory Syndrome, where what we expected to be the end of a story was actually the start.

You Decide: Now that Jericho’s back, what do you expect from him?

TNA presents Genesis on Sunday, January 9 from Orlando, Florida! Please chime in with your thoughts as we have a brand new year…make it YOUR New Year’s Resolution to give TNA a shot!

Too much? Maybe so. But TNA is hitting on all cylinders right now, pushing the right guys and delivered some great matches on this week’s Impact Wrestling.

Matches & predictions…

Gunner vs. Rob Van Dam
Gunner has been on a tear lately, putting Garett Bischoff, Jesse Neal & Douglas Williams on the shelf. Ric Flair was kept backstage for their match on Impact Wrestling, but I’d imagine Flair makes his presence known at the PPV. I see Garett Bischoff doing the same. I think we get some run-ins that cost Gunner the match.
Prediction: Rob Van Dam

Pope Dinero vs. Devon
Pope and Devon’s feud that never ends still goes on and on my friends! I’m sure TNA wants to keep this thing going, so Devon’s kids will likely cause their Dad to lose, giving Pope the win.
Prediction: Pope

Monster’s Ball Match (Abyss must rejoin Immortal if he loses): Bully Ray vs. Abyss

If you have to put Abyss into a match, Bully Ray is the best opponent TNA has on the roster. The gimmick will save this match, as will Ray himself. And if Bully Ray gets a good one out of “The Monster,” then TNA owes him a world title reign! This one is easy to predict, though. You see, Hulk Hogan said Abyss could be their John Cena. And in 2009, John Cena was forced to join The Nexus. Since Abyss = Cena…
Prediction: Bully Ray (Abyss must join The Nexus Immortal)

TNA X-Division Title Match: Austin Aries (champion) vs. Kid Kash vs. Jesse Sorensen vs. Zema Ion
So we have three heels taking on one babyface? It’s not good to be Jesse Sorensen in this one, huh? Heels don’t always get along, as Aries & Kash have proven. Ion is a great spot monkey to add to this mix, and I expect this match will both a) open the show, and b) surprise some people. In the end, A-Double steals this one.
Prediction: Austin Aries (still TNA X-Division Champion)

TNA Tag Team Title Match: Matt Morgan & Crimson (champions) vs. Samoa Joe & Magnus
I absolutely love the pairing of Samoa Joe & Magnus, and I could care less about Crimson & Matt Morgan. Joe & Magnus have been built through the Wildcard Tag Team Tournament, and it’s worked. Now, the last time TNA did this, it was Bobby Roode & the Bound For Glory Series. I have a feeling it won’t take two shots for the challengers here. One of the faces is turning here, and going heel is a much needed edge for both.
Prediction: Samoa Joe & Magnus (and NEW TNA World Tag Team Champions)

TNA Knockouts Title Match: Gail Kim (champion) vs. Mickie James

These two just had a great match that got main event treatment on Impact Wrestling. We’ll see if they get the same amount of time here. Gail Kim & Madison Rayne do not have momentum on their side here, but they do have all of the gold. They’re actually made for a feud with Tara & Brooke Tessmacher, meaning the singles belt can be used in a different way.
Prediction: Mickie James (and NEW TNA Knockouts Champion)

Kurt Angle vs. James Storm

James Storm is being treated like a God by the TNA faithful right now. Kurt Angle is still one of the best in-ring performers in the world. The crowd heat should be enormous for this one—if it were in a real arena. Instead, the canned heat will be enormous! I don’t think this is the end of the feud, so I expect Angle gets the win to set-up the rubber match in February.

Prediction: Kurt Angle

TNA World Title Match: Bobby Roode (champion) vs. Jeff Hardy

James Storm has the best act in TNA right now. Second best? My boy Robert Bobby Roode, baby! The Leader of the Selfish Generation battles the Charismatic Enigma. Now, Hogan did saw that “Bobby’s not the guy, brother” and that TNA needed someone who transcends many forms of media “like Jeff Hardy.” But I’m not sure what that really means, so I’m thinking TNA doesn’t let me down here. Don’t rule out a finish that sees Roode get himself disqualified when Hardy is running hot, just to extend this puppy out for one more PPV.
Prediction: Bobby Roode (still TNA World Heavyweight Champion)

Overall Thoughts
TNA has done some amazing things with this PPV. I care about the tag team title match, care about the Knockouts title match and am worried about the world title match. I am excited to see what Bully Ray can do with Abyss. I know that Angle-Storm will deliver. I have nothing but confidence that Austin Aries will entertain the hell out of me during the X-Division 4-Way. Now, I could care less about Devon-Pope. But that’s six out of seven matches where I have been given a reason to care.
Buy or No Buy: Buy. I really hope TNA doesn’t screw this one up!

You Decide: Buy or No Buy on Genesis for you? What are your predictions?

Over the past two years, Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff have done plenty of bad in TNA. But they have been relatively absent from TNA in recent months, since Bound For Glory. The product is largely focused on Bobby Roode’s push as the top heel—and “The Leader of the Selfish Generation.” And despite the fact that Ric Flair is paired with Gunner on television, I can see some of his influence rubbing off on Roode. So much that I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if he gets himself disqualified on Sunday’s PPV.

Outside of Roode, you have the ascension of his Beer Money partner, James Storm. Storm has been on fire since his shocking World Championship win over Kurt Angle on the Impact Wrestling right after Bound For Glory. That has led to his great feud with Angle, and his rise to the top of the card. The future seems clear for a Roode-Storm feud headed into Lockdown, which makes perfect sense.

In the X-Division, you have one of the most consistent performers in the company in Austin Aries. Jesse Sorensen and Kid Kash have emerged as his major opposition since Aries’s feud with Brian Kendrick was over. During the Genesis build, Zema Ion defeated Anthony Nese in a best of three series to add another challenger to the mix. The rebuilding of the X-Division (including the addition of a weight limit) has been slow, but is paying dividends with Aries. Alex Shelley is also listed on some upcoming house show cards, hinting at a return for him in the division.

The Knockouts are going through a major change as Karen Jarrett is out as their leader, while Madison Rayne and Gail Kim still sit at the top of the division. Mickie James is Kim’s opposition for Genesis, but the queens also have Tara & Brooke Tessmacher to deal with. Add in the listing of Velvet Sky for the upcoming house shows and business is going to pick-up.

One of 2011’s biggest surprises was Bully Ray, who emerged as a great performer after his split with Devon in Team 3D. Thanks to much attrition, he’s the leader of Immortal, and has also gotten himself into great shape. Every feud Ray has been in has been great, and I think he will pull a good one out of Abyss at Genesis.

A story that has me excited as a viewer is the development of Samoa Joe & Magnus as a team. I think there’s a very good chance they will leave Bound For Glory as the World Tag Team Champions. They are both criminally underappreciated, and will make a great team that you can actually build around.

Since the end of Fortune (thanks to turns from Bobby Roode and Christopher Daniels and the elevation of James Storm), AJ Styles and Kazarian have also been busy. AJ got in some great work against Bobby Roode, and Kazarian is now in the center of yet another issue between Christopher Daniels and AJ Styles.

The Television Championship in TNA has unfortunately been a joke. The belt is no longer around the waist of Eric Young, and is with Robbie E. There has been no TV title involvement in the Genesis build, but a recent mention of TNA having a “grand slam” of titles makes me think they might get serious about this championship in the future. Samoa Joe, Kurt Angle & AJ Styles chasing a grand slam would be a great way to elevate the championship and champ Robbie E.

Gunner has been on a tear recently, putting Garett Bischoff, Jesse Neal and Douglas Williams on the shelf. He’s paired with Rob Van Dam at Genesis, and will likely be flanked by Ric Flair. Gunner is loaded with potential, and is actually a 12-year veteran in wrestling. I am excited to see what he can do in a higher level feud down the road.

Why am I giving you a synopsis of TNA? Because the company is getting it right. They’re pushing talent that can lead the company for years to come. They’re effectively using veterans as part of the process. They’re basically doing what many of us have asked them to do for the past 12 months. All that’s left is to get out of the Impact Zone and go to a live/tape rotating schedule with Impact Wrestling on the road. So many moments fall flat when presented in front of a dead Impact Zone crowd and with canned heat. It kills the momentum that can be created with a great moment, and a real live crowd would change that.

Funny aside—you ever notice how no one from the Impact Zone crowd defends themselves? In an age with a huge interconnecting internet, not one person who regularly watches TNA at the Impact Zone has defended the place. Either they know it’s bad, or it’s a crowd full of tourists looking to see what’s being advertised or just wants some time to sit and relax.

So do yourself a favor, start watching TNA. As I have been recapping the program and providing the Impact Wrestling report, I have tried to stay spoiler free. It’s made a huge difference, and I am enjoying the product.

You Decide: Will you go back and give TNA a chance?
