411 PPV Roundtable Preview – WWE WrestleMania XXVIII (Part One)

March 31, 2012 | Posted by Stephen Randle

Introduction:

It is the largest spectacle in all of sports entertainment. It is the longest-running yearly PPV wrestling event in history. It is the grand-daddy of them all, the showcase of the immortals, the place where the stars align, the biggest stage of them all. It is, quite simply, WrestleMania, and on April 1st, WWE will be airing the 28th edition of their single most important PPV of the year.

This year, WrestleMania XXVIII is headlined by the largest, most high-profile match in this generation of pro wrestling. In one corner, the former Doctor of Thuganomics, the active centerpiece of WWE, a multiple-time World and WWE Champion, and the man around whom the current era of WWE has revolved for nearly a decade, John Cena. And on the other side, the biggest mainstream star in wrestling history, the third generation star who became truly larger than the business, The People’s Champ, The Rock. These two men, who have been engaged in an increasingly personal war of words for over a year, will face off in The Rock’s hometown of Miami with absolutely everything on the line.

But that’s not all, as the most mythical force in WWE will once again put his most precious achievement on the line, against a man who swears that he knows the secret to ending the longest and only perfect winning streak in WrestleMania history. Yes, The Undertaker will take on Triple H in the twentieth edition of The Streak. And this time, The Streak may be in more jeopardy than ever before, as this match will be contested inside of the most dangerous structure in WWE, Hell in a Cell. And if that weren’t enough, Shawn Michaels, who himself twice failed to break The Streak and ended his career because of it, will be the special referee for this contest.

In addition, the WWE Title will be up for grabs as CM Punk defends against the returning Chris Jericho, who has stooped to crossing the line and attacking the personal failings of Punk’s family in recent weeks in an attempt to distract the Straight Edge Superstar from his goal of retaining the WWE Title. However, Jericho’s plans may have backfired, as Punk looks more focussed than ever before, and Jericho may find himself facing a very dangerous opponent this Sunday.

Meanwhile, the World Title may also leave Mania in new hands, as the winner of the 2012 Royal Rumble match, Sheamus, looks to get his hands on the belt that is currently around the waist of Daniel Bryan. Bryan has successfully defended his belt for over three months using increasingly unlikely ways of procuring victory, while Sheamus has simply torn through his competition leading up to this match.

All this, plus Cody Rhodes will defend the Intercontinental title against The Big Show, Randy Orton will face Kane, Extra’s Maria Menounos will team up with Kelly Kelly to face the team of Eve and Beth Phoenix, and twelve men will collide in a gigantic 6-on-6 tag match to determine who will be GM of both Raw and Smackdown! It’s a card so big we had to split the Roundtable into two partsm so let’s stop wasting words and get things underway!

Maria Menounos and Kelly Kelly vs Beth Phoenix and Eve Torres

Stephen Randle: I don’t think I’ve ever seen WWE promote a celebrity Mania match less than this one. I mean, sure, it’s just a meaningless Divas match, but they did more to promote the fact that Jonathon Taylor Thomas would be at WrestleMania XI, and he didn’t even wrestle. Anyway, standard Mania celebrity rules apply here, especially since the match means nothing and Menounos is so dedicated that she’s working with cracked ribs.

Winner: Menounos and Kelly

Aaron Frame: I fall in to the majority of people who don’t really pay attention to the Divas. They haven’t been entertaining since…Sable and Miss Jackie. And that was mostly for the sex appeal. Had Kharma, whom I still feel and pray for and hope she’s doing okay, been able to stick around I think I would have paid more attention. The idea of Kharma, Nattie Neidhart, and Beth Phoenix in a triple threat title match at WM would definitely get me to watch it. So, considering the track record of celebrities being in matches at WM, this one is pretty much predictable.

Winner: Maria Menounos and Kelly Kelly

James Wright: I’ll start by saying I still have no real idea who Maria Menounos is, but apparently she is more attractive than the divas so apparently that means she gets a match at Wrestlemania. All I will say is that what if instead it was Beth with Eve in her corner vs. Natalya with this Maria Menounos in her corner, wouldn’t that make a hell of a lot more sense and be a much better match? Oh and for the Divas championship of course. Fantasy booking aside though it is obvious that the celebrity will go over, probably pinning the Divas champion and shovelling the final load of dirt on the grave where lies the Divas of Doom.

Winner: Maria Menounos and Kelly Kelly

John Downey: I know that complaining about the Divas Wrestlemania match is redundant by now, but this feels especially tacked on. The title isn’t up for grabs, the angle with Menounos came out of nowhere, and I don’t know how Kelly Kelly fits into all of this. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kelly took the fall and Menounos got a good shot in on one of the heels after the match, but I’ll go with the safe pick.

Winner: Maria Menounos and Kelly Kelly

Gavin Napier: Um…yeah. I guess Maria Menounos is the new Pete Rose, where she shows up every year at WrestleMania for something? That’s…oh, hell. I can’t even pretend to care about this match.

Winner: MM and KK

Dan Plunkett: If they were going to add a women’s match to the show, I wish it would have been with people that can actually work. I would get the booking of this match if Maria Menounos was someone people know and would be intrigued to see her wrestle, but outside of perhaps her family and co-workers nobody is buying this show for her. It’s a celebrity match, so the team with the celebrity will almost certainly win. Hopefully it’s short.

Winners: Maria Menounos and Kelly Kelly

Michael Weyer: Now I like Maria Menounos, I really do so hopefully this won’t be the painful debacle we all expect. If nothing else, Kelly, Beth and Eve should be able to pick it up and help make it watchable at least. Since the celebs get the rub here, she comes off on top.

Winners: Maria and Kelly

Mathew Sforcina Hey hey hey. Remember what happened last time? Snooki outworked half the damn Diva roster. Which is not to say I’m expecting C4’s or Canadian Destroyers out of Team Double Double (Team Extra Extra?), but given that she’s working hurt, it’ll be short and hopefully inoffensive. Well, no more offensive than the treatment of the Divas division as a whole. But that’s a whole other argument (that won’t just die in my comments section…)

Winners: Team Extra Double Double Extra Extra Double Double (Double Roll Up)

David McGregor: The obligatory divas match at the show, everyone knows it will suck but at least there is a minor celebrity there for some publicity. Being from the UK I have no idea who Maria Menounos is, but she is somewhat a celebrity and that means she’s guaranteed to win come Sunday.

Winner: Maria and Kelly Kelly

Jack Bramma: Celebs have to go over at Mania. It’s like a law or something.

Winner: Maria Menounos and Kelly Kelly

TJ Hawke: Ugh. WWE doesn’t understand their core, money-spending audience at all. I hate that Maria is taking a WrestleMania spot from another diva (specifically Natalya who has had to suffer the damn farting gimmick), and I hate that this completely meaningless match is taking away time from the other 7 matches on the card. Bathroom break.

Winner: Beth Phoenix and Eve Torres

Michael Ornelas: Menounos’ broken ribs could actually be used as a selling point to have the celebrity lose at WrestleMania for once. Let’s put over the champion! And more than any other match on the card, I really don’t care if I’m right.

Winner: Beth Phoenix & Eve Torres

Robert S. Leighty Jr: This match should probably follow Hell in a Cell to give the crowd a chance to cool down. Since this is a tag match and Beth doesn’t have to eat the pin, I expect team team with the celebrity to get the win by pinning Eve.

Winner: Kelly Kelly and Maria Menounos

Daniel Anderson: Let’s get this year’s celebrity match out of the way. I have no doubt the “celebrity” (in this case Maria Menounos) will win the match. Also, given that this is WWE and WrestleMania, Menounos will probably go over Beth Phoenix clean.

Winner: Maria Menounos and Kelly Kelly

Steve Cook: OK, so Maria isn’t one of the top celebrities to grace the WrestleMania stage. Doesn’t matter to me, I’ve had a crush on that girl since she was on Channel One News back in the day. I love me some Maria and I’m all about her being on this show. Girl’s gonna work through two broken ribs too, so you gotta give her some respect! Also, it’s tough to disagree with the WWE officials who are so taken with her…

Good times.

Winners: Maria & Kelly

Randy Orton vs Kane

Stephen Randle: From the creative minds that brought you Randy Orton vs CM Punk and Randy Orton vs Cody Rhodes vs Ted DiBiase, it’s another match to make sure Randy Orton and another random guy gets a Mania payday, because he’s Randy Orton and he will be on every PPV we can get him on. This result is less in doubt than The Streak.

Winner: Randy Orton

Aaron Frame: As we all know, this feud has been very rushed and very last minute. I don’t think I was actually feeling it until Kane pointed out the fact that the old him was weak. I really got behind the idea that he regretted being cordial and showing respect and therefore showing weakness in the monster. That was about the only thing that got me interested. It was an interesting perspective and I really like the idea of Kane being the big, red machine out to destroy those who had a hand in him becoming less of the monster that dwells within him. On the other side of the match, you have Orton. He’s a hard worker but is often times hit and miss. He can really be on fire one moment, but completely lacking the next. He hasn’t really sold me on the idea that he wants to exact revenge on Kane. What do I think the outcome of the match will be? I don’t know, it’s up in the air to me. But I think Kane gets a win here to further his monster heel thing he’s got going on again.

Winner: Kane

James Wright: While I don’t agree with Orton that this match might take precedence over Bryan vs. Sheamus I will say that I am anticipating this match to be a sleeper match and surprise people despite the lacklustre build. Let’s face it, the build for most of these matches has been sub-par, but I’m hoping that the matches themselves will be golden. Orton has shown how good he can make a heel look, before eventually pulling out the victory, and Kane is the same regarding babyfaces, so I am expecting a top notch match in terms of storytelling, with the Viper coming out on top.

Winner: Randy Orton

John Downey: Well, I guess they had to do something with both of these guys. This could beat expectations if Orton sells Kane’s offense like death, and there’s no reason to think he wouldn’t. As for who wins, Kane can lose a thousand matches in a row and still be a convincing monster, while Orton needs all the help he can get as he has spent much of 2012 on injured reserve. This writes itself.

Winner: Randy Orton

Gavin Napier: This is another match that’s really hard for me to get excited about. On one side of the ring, you’ve got one of the most bland, boring, stale, wrestlers on WWE’s roster and on the other side is Kane. While I’d like to say that Kane will rebound from his loss to Cena by beating Orton, that’s unlikely since Orton came up short against Mark Henry in his last prolonged feud. Looks like Orton wins and we’ll be treated to some more boring monotone promos directed at somebody that I’ll instantly care less about.

Winner: Randy Orton

Dan Plunkett: This is really a nothing feud made just to get Orton and Kane on the show, especially the former. Unless they do an angle after the match, I don’t see any reason for this feud to continue past Mania. And if they’re not continuing the program, Orton should win here. That could put Orton in a program for the heavyweight title, but if Sheamus wins (he probably will) I don’t see that feud happening so early in his title run, so Kane could win here to keep Orton occupied. But still, I think Orton is the safer bet.

Winner: Randy Orton

Michael Weyer: Orton’s health is still in question so hard to tell how this match plays out. The build has been pretty rushed too but both guys know this is the big show and are ready to do their best to elevate things. I see Orton getting the win after his long absence to rise back into things.

Winner: Randy Orton

Mathew Sforcina: … Actually this one is hard to pick, in that either outcome is plausible, and either outcome can work with the winner of the World Title match. So, given that this match is irrelevant, you have to go with the next match down. Basically, you have to look at who is going to win the GM position, and then go with the other alignment, so that the new GM has someone to play off. And with that logic…

Winner: Randy Orton (RKO X3)

David McGregor: Who in their right mind thought this would be a good idea for a WrestleMania feud? I understand that both guys need to be on the show, but they could have done so much more. Well Orton could have anyway. This has had a piss poor build and is literally been thrown together. At least the Divas match has a celebrity in there for publicity, this is just an average Smackdown match put on the biggest show of the year! We all know Orton is winning this one but it will be a tough experience getting there.

Winner: Randy Orton

Jack Bramma: How did we end up here? The return of Kane seemed rife with new possibilities. It was a return to the old organ music and the mask and yet here we are 2 PPVs later with no significant victories and two PPV non-victories and a stalled push. I understand that Kane isn’t really going anywhere but I just didn’t think he’d return to doing nothing this fast. Orton, on the other hand, seems to think his match is one of the 2 or 3 most important of the show. Let’s hope he puts on a performance to justify that self-aggrandizement.

Winner: Randy Orton

TJ Hawke: This match’s only silver lining is that two hard working veterans are getting a WrestleMania payday. Other than that, I think this match is a waste of time. I’m sure that they will work hard, but the faster this match ends, the better for everyone watching at home. I think we will learn a lot about WWE’s priorities by seeing how much time this match gets compared to the World Heavyweight Title match.

Winner: Randy Orton

Michael Ornelas: I don’t want to bury Kane because I know he’s still fairly new to his new mask/monster run, but I doubt Orton gets beaten in a short match. And I want the match to be short. Therefore I see Orton winning with an RKO out of nowhere. I don’t want to see the chokeslam into the RKO spot because it’s been done before, but I’d actually like to see an RKO turned into a chokeslam for a nearfall. That’d be bananas.

Winner: Randy Orton

Robert S. Leighty Jr.: This is 3rd straight year has been reduced to an undercard match and that’s kind of shocking to me. Last year I was there to see him and Punk deliver a damn fine match, but I can’t see it happening this year with Kane. I love the fact that Kane is back to being a masked monster as always makes for a better character. I will give Orton the nod here as Kane is always seen as a threat no matter if he wins or loses.

Winner: Randy Orton

Daniel Anderson: The 4th most important match on the card (at least according to Orton). Kane came back and has done nothing and Orton will win this match. I’m not saying this will be a bad match (has the potential to go either way), but I think the outcome is without a doubt.

Winner: Randy Orton

Steve Cook: I join my colleagues in not giving a good goddamn about this. Orton & Kane are both established stars and usually don’t have a problem getting a reaction out of the WWE Universe, but this feud is absolutely nothing. In a perfect world, Kane would be doing something with Zack Ryder since he’s been feuding with Ryder & John Cena for the past couple of months & Randy Orton would be on Teddy Long’s team to give Team Teddy some star power. Instead we have this foregone conclusion of a match.

Winner: Randy Orton

David Otunga, Mark Henry, The Miz, Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler, and Drew McIntyre
vs
Santino Marella, Kofi Kingston, R-Truth, The Great Khali, Zack Ryder, and Booker T

Winning Team’s GM Becomes GM Of Both Raw and Smackdown

Stephen Randle: Is there any way neither team can win and we can split the difference and get Mick Foley as GM instead? Because that’s what I really want. Other than that, Team Teddy contains elements that are purely composed of underdogs and heart, and also Smackdown always wins these things anyway so that WWE can pretend they aren’t Raw’s farm system.

Winner: Team Teddy

Aaron Frame: At first I couldn’t really care about this story. Neither Johnny nor Teddy invoke any kind of emotion from me. If anything, it’s boredom. The highlight for me has been watching Santino do his thing. That guy entertains the hell out of me. His goofy character is refreshing. It’s great to have something a little different than the usual serious business. My thoughts are that Team Teddy will win and we get the feel good moment as Santino or Ryder or both are left standing victorious. Reason being that I see Teddy sticking around longer as an on-air role as that’s his only position. Johnny has another job and probably a damn nice office. If I’m wrong, where does that leave Teddy? Managing again? I could live with that. Either way, I just hope he stops doing that terrible “dance.”

Winner: Team Teddy

James Wright: If Team Teddy wins I riot. Most people have been saying how they have no interest in this match but for me I take a lot of interest, not only because it is team ‘upcoming heels’ vs. team ‘joke’, the result basically displaying WWE’s mindset going into next year, but it also might end up with Theodore Long finally, FINALLY being kicked off Smackdown after going from pointless stand in to dull tag match initiator. More importantly though there has been a lot of emphasis this year with the main event being booked a year in advance on guys getting a spot at Mania, especially with the Miz, and this is guy’s like Ziggler and McIntyre’s time to shine, so I’m happy that these future stars have something to do, even if it will be a complete cluster-fuck.

Winner: Team Johnny (If there is any justice in the world)

John Downey: Hmm. One team is made up of heavies and scary dudes, while the other team is made up of scrappy underdogs who’ve been made to look like dorks every week. Haven’t we seen this movie already?

Winner: Team Teddy

Gavin Napier: It’s bad when Booker T is the most interesting part of any WrestleMania match in the year 2012, yet here we are. I suppose the 12 man tag has taken the place of Money in the Bank this year as the way to shoehorn the most guys onto the show to get them a ‘Mania payday. What a great idea. I mean, it’s certainly better than creative doing their damn job and coming up with reasonable programs for some of them and cutting back on music acts that nobody wants to see and video packages we’ve seen for two months. I don’t know why they’d take Teddy Long off of television, but I feel like “Team Johnny” takes the win here courtesy of The Miz and a renewed push.

Winner: Team Johnny

Dan Plunkett: The General Managers have their jobs on the line in this one, and by the looks of their team selections both seem to want to take an extended vacation. Expect Team Johnny to go over here. Long is kind of played out by this point and Ace is fresher and been doing well in his role.

Winner: Team Johnny

Michael Weyer: For a “get as many guys as possible into the show” match, this doesn’t look too bad. We’ve got a huge mix of styles from Santino’s comedy to Miz’s intensity and sure to get some nice moves and spots in things. Looking forward to Kofi and Truth together against Swagger and Ziggler and even Khali may be covered here. I guess I’ll go with Team Johnny to give him both shows to lord over and increase his heat with the fans.

Winner: Team Johnny

Mathew Sforcina: I’m not basing this pick on booking. I’m not picking it on logic. I’m not even going on anything kayfabe related. One simple rule. WWE hates Zack Ryder. They love the money he’s bringing in, and they are happy to use him as a gateway to whatever other stuff they want to do for the network, but he still got over in a way other than what they intended. So despite all the other options available, Ryder eats the loss.

Winners: David Otunga, Mark Henry, The Miz, Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler, and Drew McIntyre (Future Shock on Ryder, just to really rub it in)

David McGregor: I’ve actually been enjoying this feud, I just hope it doesn’t lead to a Teddy v Johnny match somewhere down the road. There is a lot of talent in this match so if it is given a decent amount of time it could be a very interesting match. I don’t like the idea that comedy acts and part time wrestlers like Khali and Booker T have been given a spot over guys like Del Rio and Christian, but I doubt they will affect the match quality very much. I see Team Johnny taking this one, mainly because there are only so many tag team matches that could be made if Teddy was GM for both shows! Also his team is packed with great talent, and Teddy has mid carders.

Winner: Team Johnny

Jack Bramma: I was sick of evil GM a long time ago and was fed up with Johnny Ace even though he had been on TV maybe a couple months back around the Royal Rumble. I wasn’t a fan of the feud with Punk and just wanted it over and him off the TV. Now, here I am pulling a complete 180. I find the segments with Ace entertaining and I like that he’s dipped a bit into sly, wry humor as evidenced by the photograph at Elimination Chamber which for me was the highlight of the show. Teddy Long on the other hand hasn’t entertained me perhaps ever. Maybe as a manager of Doom, but other than that, I’ve just never cared for him as an on-screen character. If this were elimination rules, I’d say it could be a highly effective match, but I suspect it’ll be first pin wins and that it ends after 10 minutes max. I hope Team Johnny wins.

Winner: Team Johnny

TJ Hawke: This match. Man, the TV has made me so much less interested in this match, and I am not looking forward to it at all. Johnny Ace is far more entertaining than Teddy Long, but Long has seemingly had a death-grip on an on-screen job forever now. With so many babyfaces winning on this night, I’ll be optimistic and say the heel team will win here.

Winner: Team Johnny Ace

Michael Ornelas: Welp, Santino, Kofi, Truth, Ryder, Henry, Miz, and Ziggler have definitely proven themselves worthy of a ‘Mania match, while Swagger and McIntyre went through the year largely unproven (not by any fault of their own). Khali and Booker didn’t really do anything to earn a spot on the card, but they do give the team some kayfabe credibility as the only former world champions on Team Teddy. Otunga has been ass in the ring but he’s actually a pretty solid character. I hope the talent all gets time to shine, but honestly, I’m expecting a bit of a mess here. Hopefully they change it to elimination rules and give it some time at the expense of Kane/Orton. I’d love to see some of these guys featured properly. I’m picking Ziggler for the big win.

Winner: Team Johnny

Robert S. Leighty Jr: The WWE has thrived on a heel authority figure and that kind of tips where this match is heading. With so many guys in there it may be hard for anyone to stand out, but I just want Ziggler to get a chance to shine a little. Adding Booker is a bonus as it will be nice to see him back in the ring at a WrestleMania. Drew getting a WrestleMania spot is a good deal for him and gives me a chance to state that I met him at the Airport in Arizona the Tuesday after WrestleMania XXVI.

Winner: Team Johnny

Daniel Anderson: This is a tough match to call. I can see either team win. I am going to go for Team Johnny simply because Teddy has been the GM of Smackdown for a while and its time for a change. I would have much preferred a Money in the Bank match instead of this though.

Winner: Team Johnny

Steve Cook: Team Johnny has the advantage pretty much down the line. Henry, Miz & Ziggler have all been featured performers during stretches of the past year, Swagger & McIntyre both deserve a lot better than they’ve been given, and Otunga makes a mean cup of coffee. Team Teddy is a hodgepodge of vagabonds & ne’er-do-wells that generally make good mid-card fodder. You would think that Team Johnny would have the advantage here, but I have the feeling they’ll go with Team Teddy for the feel-good moment of Santino & Zack Ryder winning at WM. Besides, Big Johnny will still be the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and he can use that to get on TV. He won’t be totally off the team.

Winner: Team Teddy

Cody Rhodes © vs The Big Show
WWE Intercontinental Championship

Stephen Randle: When this feud started I thought there was no way Cody could lose. Now, as he’s essentially had the upper hand on Show since this thing began, I don’t think there’s any way he can win. He should probably be really upset that Wade Barrett got hurt and left him in this position.

Winner: The Big Show

Aaron Frame: This has been one of the more impressive feuds in my opinion. Cody Rhodes has been showing off just how talented he is. He’s been verbally abusing Big Show for weeks and just poking the bear with a stick. Show doesn’t really have to do much here other than act like a big pissed off giant. I think at WrestleMania, Show beats the living hell out of Rhodes, but the faster more agile IC champion will get the better of the cumbersome giant, most likely illegally, and get a win and possibly take another step to the main event.

Winner: Cody Rhodes

James Wright: This is the second of the ‘storytelling’ matches, along with Kane and Orton. Cody Rhodes has excelled himself at setting this one up by jibbing the Big Show at every turn, and Show has…well he’s got angry and chased Rhodes on several occasions, which is enough. I’m looking for these two to have a great time in the ring conveying Rhodes’s confidence and then seeing that confidence come crashing down as the giant keeps on coming, only to have Rhodes come out triumphant at the end, but with a new found respect for the Big Show. If this was a non-title match then I wouldn’t be so sure about this but seriously if Show walks away with the belt then the WWE is just plain confused.

Winner: Cody Rhodes

John Downey: Big Show’s star is too big for the Intercontinental Title (as is the rest of him), but he can’t lose here, not clean at least. The solution: have him beat Rhodes to a bloody pulp, with Rhodes winning via DQ when Show goes too far. Rhodes keeps the title and get a few good promos out of it, while Show’s character gets an interesting edge. Everyone wins.

Winner: Cody Rhodes via DQ

Gavin Napier: Big Show as Intercontinental Champion just doesn’t make sense. He’s been world champion, he doesn’t need the title, it would cut the legs from underneath the momentum that Cody Rhodes has built up, and Show is always willing to put guys over. So he’ll win.

Winner: Big Show

Dan Plunkett: Rhodes has been getting the upper hand on Big Show for weeks, so it’s time for the babyface to get his revenge. I do like John Downey’s finish idea and it would work, but I’m going with Show.

Winner: Big Show

Michael Weyer: About as “opposites attract” as you can get here. The obvious choice is Show, which makes it far more likely Cody retains. Show doesn’t need the IC belt and Cody has been doing great elevating it as the heel champ so just don’t see it ending just yet. He’ll win and hopefully get some better challengers down the road to make the title mean something again.

Winner and STILL Intercontinental Champion: Cody Rhodes

Mathew Sforcina: I’ll admit that I’m letting my fandom of that dashing young man get in the way, but while Big Show is the guy that makes sense giving the booking, and since it’s the wrong move from a push perspective you’d think Show is a lock to win the title… Ah to hell with it, let’s go with my overbooked finish: Cody cheats, Show shrugs it off, WMD, pinfall, Show wins… Only for Cody to get the match reversed. Why? Show used a closed fist, and that’s illegal. Or some other sort of Dusty Finish. I can so see Cody ripping off paying homage ripping off Rock from WMXIV, being carried out but holding the IC title high… Give me that WWE. Please?

Winner, and STILL WWE Intercontinental Champion: Cody Rhodes (Dusty Finish DQ)

David McGregor: I really don’t like the Big Show but everything could be forgiven if he lets Cody go over clean here. Big Show has been extremely dominant the past few months on Smackdown, if Cody wins here it will legitimise him as being ready for a main event run. I doubt we will see a clean ending to this however, but a dirty finish in Cody’s favour could still do wonders.

Winner: Cody Rhodes

Jack Bramma: I think Show is “above” the IC belt at this point, but so is Cody. Time for Show to get some retribution, then turn around and drop the belt to either Wade Barrett or maybe Albert.

Winner: Big Show

TJ Hawke: When this match was announced, I thought it was pretty stupid as it would take a lot of work to make people invested in the result of the match. And against the odds, I think they have managed to do just that. Unfortunately, the WWE has told a story where they pretty much have no choice but to have Big Show go over Cody and decisively. I rather that the WWE position Cody as a big part of their company’s future, but I think he is doing the job here.

Winner: The Big Show

Michael Ornelas: As much as I’d like to see Rhodes start actually start defending his championship on a regular basis and then go on to beat Honky Tonk’s run, I see Show taking the belt off Cody and finally getting his WrestleMania moment, and a spot in history as a man whose held every active WWE championship today. I didn’t realize that this championship was the only one that has eluded him. The man has had one of the best years of his career, so it makes sense to reward him, but honestly Rhodes could use the win.

Winner: The Big Show

Robert S. Leighty Jr: Cody is slowly becoming a big time player and this is just another step up the rung for him. He delivered in Atlanta against Rey and now he gets a tougher task: deliver with The Big Show. I think the IC Title is below the Big Show and does him no favors as he doesn’t need a title to be an attraction. The best thing for story would be for Show to win by DQ or count-out as Cody keeps the title and can keep the feud going.

Winner: The Big Show by DQ

Daniel Anderson: Cody pretty much has to win here. There is no advantage to Big Show winning. He doesn’t need the title and the title isn’t going to be elevated by Big Show holding it. Cody needs the win over a main event talent (periodically anyway), and this will clearly help him to be more of a legitimate threat going into the new year. Given all this I can’t see how they can afford Cody to lose. Normally that is the death sentence for a prediction, but I feel lucky.

Winner: Cody Rhodes

Steve Cook: I was listening to the Greg DeMarco Show the other night when he had 45 people previewing WrestleMania, and I was pretty shocked when they all picked Big Show to win the title here. Maybe it’s my Cody Rhodes markdom, but I’ve been convinced all along that Cody would get the win here. Big Show doesn’t need the win, he’s going to have his spot no matter what while Cody can use it to keep moving up the card. Perhaps I’m biased, but the thoughts of the many shall not change mine.

Winner: Cody Rhodes
