Hidden Highlights 4.2.2012: Austin Aries, Kane, More

April 2, 2012 | Posted by Dimitri Dorlis

Hidden Highlight (n) – a small, hardly noticeable point that makes a big, positive difference. This could be anything from a wrestler putting extra emphasis into his moves to make it believable to a person in the background reacting while not the focus to the cameraman shaking the picture to create an effect. There are just so many unsung heroes of wrestling that it is impossible to cover them all.

And with that, welcome to Hidden Highlights. I am your host, Dimitri Dorlis. Each week on Hidden Highlights, we’ll be looking back on the week of wrestling, taking a look at our top 3 highlights from each of the major wrestling shows (Raw, Impact, and Smackdown) and a ppv if one occurs.

Also, as with the original Hidden Highlights, we’ll also take a look at reader-submitted highlights, and post our favorite ones at the end of the columns. How do you get your submissions in to me? Well, you have two options. The recommended option would be to send me an email at [email protected] with the title Hidden Highlight. The second option would be to leave a comment here with your highlight, although I can’t guarantee that I’ll read all the comment highlights, so if you really want to get your submission in, send me that email. The best 10 submissions will get posted, so make them good!

And with all the housekeeping out of the way, let’s get down to business.

2. I’m tweeting! – Ok, so TNA isn’t great at the whole Twitter thing, mainly because, as hard as it is for me to suspend my belief that enough people are tweeting about the WWE, it’s even harder for me to believe that TNA is trending at anything. But we did get this wonderful moment from Victory Road:

I’m sure he had that whole thing waiting to send during the match, but I enjoyed that so much. Mini Highlights also go to the #victoryroad sign that TNA had set up, and the worst “This is Awesome” chant imaginable.

1. I feel like they’ve fought each other before. – The Daniels/Kaz vs Styles/Anderson match featured a ton of counters by Daniels against Styles, which was a great play on the decade-long rivalry the two have had.. Highlights included Daniels countering Styles’ inverted DDT attempt by putting his knees up, Styles countering Kaz’s monkey-flip into a clothesline of Daniels, and Daniels avoiding AJ’s dive to the outside.

2. Kane wanted none of that. – So DB did the same thing he did last week where he ran to tag a partner as soon as Sheamus tagged in. That’s not what this highlight is about. Instead, Kane gets a mention during the hot tag to Orton, as he jumped off the apron immediately, which dissuaded Orton from going to attack him. I love how both heels kept trying to shy away from their Wrestlemania opponents unless they had the upper hand.

Also shoutout to the tag rope for making an appearance.

1. Secret highlight from last week’s Raw: a wild Shane Douglas appeared. – The joke here is, unless you were one of the 5 people who were surrounding Douglas as he took his sweater off, you had no idea he had just shown up on television. Shane was there to promote Extreme Reunion or something who knows, but this was definitely a hidden highlight considering how hard you had to look to find him. Let’s see how Curt Hawkins reacted to Shane’s appearance:

I think we’ll be getting a lot of mileage out of that.

Remember that whole concussion thing? – I have no idea what Ken Anderson has been doing for the past year. I remember he was in that concussion angle, but then he disappeared or something, and now he’s back. Whatever. The point I’m trying to bring up, though, is that Anderson has a history of concussions, so the way he acted at the end of his match with Hardy made sense. Even more impressive to me, though, is the fact that HH Public Enemy #1 Earl Hebner managed to remember this piece of information, and spent the postmatch checking on Anderson. Congratulations, Earl. You did something right.

Road to WrestleMania means no Smackdown for you – So, there’s a reason I delayed covering Victory Road. Ok, two reasons. One, because I’m lazy, but the second reason is because the Smackdown before Wrestlemania is usually full of half-hearted matches and shots from Axxess. Thus, you get a delayed Victory Road, and basically 0 highlights from Smackdown. But, because I know all of my wonderful readers (read this as, none of my readers) love reading about things I liked from a show, here are the things I liked from this week’s truncated Smackdown:

Michael Cole demonstrating the WWE Live ramp while doing HHH’s entrance, which was a small callback to when HHH made him come out to his entrance. The video of that is at the bottom of this list.
They actually sell Team Johnny and Team Teddy t-shirts. Guess I have some money to spend.
The fact that Christian currently has the longest hairdo between himself, Edge, and Jericho. Wouldn’t have guessed that one 10 years ago.
The CeNation Action Zone. Damn now I want to go to Wrestlemania and just hang out at Axxess for a few days. Of course I’d end up at an RoH show or something as well but Axxess just looks like a blast.
LIONTAMER!
Oh my god the Money in the Bank set.

Reader Highlights

I only got one submission this week, so you get this from Sjakie. Personally, it doesn’t seem like much to me, but I’ll let you guys be the judge.

I don’t know if it was for the Pedigree at the house show last week, but I thought it was cool for Drew McIntyre to do the HHH waterbreathing thing while walking down the SmackDown aisle.

Keep up the good work!

And he didn’t send in an actual highlight, but small shoutout to Carl for only using examples from TNA to prove a counterpoint to a TNA highlight.

And with that, the 8th edition of Hidden Highlights v2.0 is in the books. Make sure to send in your reader Highlights so we can return this to being the most reader-inclusive and positive article in the IWC.
