Wrestling’s 4R’s 08.03.12: WWE Raw, ROH on Sinclair & DGUSA iPPV Reviews

August 3, 2012 | Posted by Larry Csonka

How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week, THREE if there is a PPV to review. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and need discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

Let’s rock…

By: Shawn S. Lealos

ROH Television 07.28.12:
QUICK RESULTS:
* Rhino def. Rocco Abruzzi
* Tomasso Ciampa def. Mike Sydal
* Adam Cole def. Roddy Strong for the TV title

  • THE RIGHT:
Tomasso Ciampa drops Prince Nana – Part of me hates this because I love seeing Prince Nana in the ring. However, maybe they will lead Nana to bringing in some talent for revenge. Basically what happened was, after the Rhino match, Ciampa brought RD Evans and Prince Nana to the ring and asked for the truth. Well, Truth Martini threw them under the bus and said they should tell Ciampa about their arrangements (helping Roddy Strong retain the TV title at the last iPPV). Well, RD Evans took the mic and told Ciampa that it was all Nana’s idea. Ciampa grabs Nana, says something in Sicilian and then drops him with the Air Raid Crash. After the break, Nigel McGuinness said that what Ciampa said in Sicilian was “The Embassy is dead.” I loved listening to Ciampa talk and think he can be great on his own if they decide to move him completely out of The Embassy.

Sara Del Freaking Ray – This week Eddie Edwards admitted that he went out and got Sara Del Ray to take care of Maria for him. At Boiling Point, it is Eddie and Del Ray against Maria and Mike Bennett. Del Ray: “Maria, a real woman would break you in half. I will be that woman.” God, it is nice to see a bad ass female wrestler back in the ring again. Maria was kind of funny too when she hinted that Mike Bennett wouldn’t get any if that “Drag Queen of Ring of Honor” put a hand on her. This should be a fun match.

  • PURGATORY:
Tomasso Ciampa vs. Mike Sydal – I like how Kevin Kelly immediately let the audience know that Mike is Matt Sydal’s younger brother, mentioning that Matt was a former ROH Tag Team Champion. Of course, they never mentioned that Matt does by the name Evan Bourne now. The match was good and Mike hit an impressive moonsault from the top buckle onto Ciampa outside the ring. However, the match was just a basic squash with Mike getting in a little action. This is two matches in a row where brand new guys are fed to monsters and the only thing keeping the show going at this point was the Ciampa-Embassy storyline.

Kevin Steen vs. Eddie Kingston at Boiling Point – The Inside Ring of Honor introduction to Eddie Kingston was very well done but I have to question this booking. Jim Cornette wants the title off of Steen so bad that he is bringing back a man who was just as bad as Steen to get the job done. Kingston was banned from ROH three years ago for being then what Steen is today. And Cornette loves it. I don’t understand why Cornette wants to trade one bad seed for another. Sure, Kingston might have found redemption in CHIKARA, but this video just showed two nut jobs fighting and Cornette seeming even more delusional than usual.

  • THE WRONG:
Rhino vs. Rocco Abruzzi – While I understand the reason for this short squash match was to set up the Tomasso Ciampa angle, the match was horrible. Rocco Abruzzi looked impressive coming to the ring. When he took off his coat, hat and mask, he looked like a little, dumpy version of Tank Abbott. What is sad is that Abbott was a better wrestler. Rocco couldn’t even sell the Gore properly. May we never see Rocco Abruzzi again.

Adam Cole wins TV title – I know that ROH is high on Adam Cole but I feel this was a bad move. The match was great, as Roddy Strong matches always are, but I don’t understand Cole winner. In TNA, everyone expected James Storm to be the man to end Bobby Roode’s World title rein and then they pulled the trigger and gave the belt to Austin Aries. That is understandable because Aries is a great wrestler. Ever since Cole pinned Davey Richards, he has really slacked off and has had maybe two good TV matches since then. The fact is that, with Roddy and Michael Elgin having so many problems, it seems obvious that Elgin would take the belt off Roddy. That did not happen and now it looks like they may feud with no belt on the line. That is tragic since Elgin, not Cole, deserves to be a champion right now.

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
The All Night Express – There has been a few weeks since Kenny King left Ring of Honor, so there should have been a way to edit this out of the show. Hell, show highlights from another road show or something. ROH fans know what happened, they know Kenny King left after demanding the clean title change, and now we are seeing King on TV while also knowing he is now a TNA star. This should never have been included in the TV show.

    The 411

This was a huge letdown for a ROH TV show, and I am usually pretty happy with them. There was a great main event that ended with a decision I don’t agree with. There was a crap match to open the show and a lackluster match in the two slot. The only thing that holds this show up is the movement of the Tomasso Ciampa storyline. This week was doomed by the appearance of The All Night Express. There is no reason that was not edited out of the show after Kenny King screwed Ring of Honor.

    SHOW RATING: 5.0

  • THE RIGHT:
PUNK IS BACK!: Last week I spoke of the nature of Punk and how this turn wasn’t immediately leaning towards the heel side. Instead, I thought it would just be an expansion of the thoughts he has shared with us before, on numerous occasions. Imagine the pleasure I had when Punk came out and said pretty much everything I thought he would and make it so that he was simply tired of The Rock and his ability to come in whenever he’d like, steal the spotlight, and bounce. This was perfect, and was on its way to a great promo before The Big Show came out. For whatever reason, I felt this moment, this cross-legged on the announce table moment, needed to stand alone in order to have the proper effect, but that wasn’t to be. Nonetheless, it was powerful and (hopefully) just a hint of what is to come.

AJ AS GM: I still don’t find the idea in its entirety to be worthy of the Right section, but as a stand alone show and AJ’s part in it, I liked the way it was handled. AJ was only around for small moments, and each not only added to previous relationships she has been in, but also to the storylines that may be coming heading into Summerslam. If this turns out to be AJ fooling us all with her psycho shtick to become a woman of power, I suppose it works somewhat, but I’m still a bit worried about where this could go. For now, however, they did it Right in keeping her in small doses and doing her job while still giving me enough of her to satiate my AJ needs.

SHEAMUS VS BRYAN: Ok, let’s take away the fact that the WWE essentially insulted our intelligence with those three choices and focus on the match itself. It was 15 minutes (perhaps 12 without commercials) of ass-kickery. THIS is perhaps what Mania should have been (and maybe more of you would actually like Sheamus if that were the case). I really enjoyed the back and forth here, as Bryan looked competent and a worthy opponent. The win was never in question, but the way it happened was fine by me. I also appreciate Sheamus pulling Bryan OFF the steps before pinning (take note, Cena), making it more legit and actually within the confines of the rules that we have been following for Lord knows how many years.

LIL JIMMY GOT GOT: This was probably funnier to me than it had any right to be. I chuckled hard.

THREE HEELS AND A FACE WALK INTO A BAR…: Christian and Jericho are here to teach the younger dudes a thing or two, and they did just that. The match was a lot of fun, and although my immediate concern was for The Miz, who had just won his Intercontinental Title, I didn’t feel all that bad considering Christian cheated to win and that could be used by The Miz next week. Christian got his revenge, Ziggler got the upperhand, Miz can complain like only he knows how…all good stuff. The match was fun to watch and Ziggler was able to lay Jericho out after the match, which adds to their inevitable showdown.

CENA VS SHOW: Pretty solid main event, all things considered. These guys haven’t been the best of opponents, and The Big Show is just so boring… But the match was as good as you could get from the two, I suppose. It also appears that we’ll finally get the WWE Championship in the main event of a PPV, at least, right?

  • PURGATORY:
DEL RIO SMUSHES SANTINO: I’m not one to be upset that the United States Champion was squashed, I mean…it’s Santino. I will say, however, that there is no reason for him to have the belt IF this is what they are going to be doing with him. Having Del Rio get some flame on his fire is fine by me, and that after match promo was great, but the reality of it is they are wasting a tool that could be used to enhance talent. The title is meaningless right now, and it’s such a shame.

SANDOW VS CLAY: I’m worried here because although both have made waves with the fans in very different ways, I feel that neither are truly established and a loss for either one is going to hurt them. If Sandow were to go up against, say, Tyson Kidd, a loss wouldn’t hurt Kidd but it would help Sandow immensely. If Clay and Sandow tangle up, who is to win and what will it truly do for them? I don’t think anything, so this will sit in puRgatory until I see it change or they do something to spark legit interest.

BRYAN, PATIENT #0519: See what I did there? 05/19…May 19th…no? Anyways, if we are to escape reality and assume that there is a full staff and a doctor on hand for the WWE, then I guess this makes sense. It’s a bit of a revenge ploy from AJ and that’s fine, but it’s lurking very close to cheesy level. I feel Bryan can handle this, and perhaps it’s fine considering he can get some mileage out of it, but when is the last time something as hokey as this worked within the WWE?

ORTON RETURNS: Maybe it’s because I’m a fan of Orton, or maybe it’s because I just expected more, but this return should have been a bigger deal, in my opinion. I know, he fucked up and that’s why he was suspended, but if the WWE is going to ignore it, then screw it, so am I. His demons ain’t mine, and I expected a more grand return. Nonetheless, we got another Heath squash (which is fine by me) and Orton is back, complete with a douche haircut.

TENSAI: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to…The Train to Nowhere.

  • THE WRONG:
WHO THROWS A SHOE?: I am nowhere as much up in arms about the whole Kobe thing. The only damage it caused me was akin to seeing a bad comedian. The joke was outdated and was whatever. Truly, I made no big deal about it until I was asked. I do question the whole win though, as a shoe shouldn’t really be the detriment of a match, and it was way too short. We’re supposed to believe that these two cannot pick up a win as a team, but as singles competitors they can beat the champs in under three minutes? Something doesn’t equate.

PUNK IS NOT BACK: If you recall, I was extremely elated during the beginning of RAW (if you don’t recall, scroll up). I thought they were on the right track and I was looking forward to the CM Punk that would make valid points while still coming off like a dick. I was ready for it, and waiting with open arms…then the end of RAW happens and it just pissed me off. Is this what Punk is going to resort to? He sounds like Christian during his heel shtick. That’s not the heel the WWE needs, and that’s not the heel that CM Punk needs to be. He was spot on with The Rock, and made so much sense with what he was saying. The way he said it was just effective enough to come off heelish, but he skirted the line. The end of RAW was heel tactic #43 and I hope it was just a slip up since it looked somewhat ad-libbed…I hope

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
15 recap videos: Let’s average each of those out and say that they were a minute and a half long. True, some were longer, but some were also shorter. That would be 21 minutes. Twenty-one minutes, people, of recap videos. I’d say perhaps 2 of those were valid, what with the reminder of something that happened a month ago and the like. Let’s go over them, shall we?
    1) We start the show with the WWE letting us know there was a fire in the building. Not important, I don’t think, but whatever.
    2) Then we get a recap of last week, practically highlighting every main attraction of the show.
    3) In case you didn’t see the small segment of Triple H and Heyman in the first recap, they show you a stronger and more compelling video package of Heyman/HHH.
    4) Remember when Vince made AJ the GM? Well, here’s a reminder.
    5) They show what happened to Sheamus a few weeks ago, something that boggled my mind since it had little to do with the match that was about to take place.
    6) In case you missed what CM Punk said EARLIER TONIGHT, here’s a recap.
    7) JUST after a commercial break, they show what they JUST showed beforehand regarding Punk.
    8) Know what’s funny, when people throw shoes. So funny, they had to show ya twice.
    9) Another MOMENTS AGO segment where we get to see Punk say what he told Cena 10 minutes ago, again.
    10) Heath lost to Lita last week, did you not see that in the opening segment? Well just in case…
    11) Orton beat Heath in a minute, here’s 20 seconds of that minute.
    12) Hey, we had a fire, did ya see it?
    13) It was about a month ago when Tyson beat Tensai, this is how it went down.
    14) One video package of Triple h and Heyman wasn’t enough, so here’s another.

THIS is a problem, people. I get that it’s their first week going three hours, but 21 minutes worth of…crap that we ALREADY KNEW or that we didn’t need to see. This time doesn’t even include the TOUT shit…

TOUT: Know what’s cool? Seeing wrestlers interact with their fans and make small videos making fun of other races. Know what’s not funny? Seeing wrestling fans be…wrestling fans. Let’s face it, we’re an odd group that probably shouldn’t be seeing too much sun, so what does the WWE do? They give us an outlet to expose ourselves to the masses?! The pool of intelligent wrestling fans (much to my knowledge) isn’t that deep. If you are offended, then you’re probably one of them. If you’re not, then you know what I’m talking about. Remember what happened last time the WWE gave fans free reign to do what they wanted? Nude pictures of Tiffany, that’s what happened…hey, maybe Tout will work out for all of us…

    The 411

The strong points of the show were really strong (tag match, Bryan vs. Sheamus, CM Punk’s opening) but there was far too much in the middle and wRong that didn’t sit right with me. I think the show was good, but with a three hour time range, there’s a lot that can really mess it up, and that’s the WWE’s fault, not mine. Cut out the recap vids, the Touts, the Santino squash, the Kidd squash, move Brodus/Sandow to Smackdown and you know what you got? A 2 hour RAW that hits the 8.0 and up range. Tonight?

    SHOW RATING: 6.5

    DGUSA iPPV THOUGHTS:

DGUSA Enter the Dragon Gate 2012 iPPV Thoughts – By: Larry Csonka

    * Masada defeated Jake Manning via pin [NR]: This was just a squash match for Masada, who is not working in my eyes. I get that they want to replace Brodie Lee, but he isn’t cutting it. Instead of replacing him, I would focus on the continued elevation of Jon Davis. The crowds seem to like Das, he works had and has been having some quality matches.

    * The Scene defeated Zero Gravity via pin [**]: I am still not a fan of The Scene., and am not sure that I ever will be. This was an acceptable match, but nothing I was thrilled about having to pay for. Nothing horrible, but I felt as if the show was off to a rocky start.

    * Samuray Del Sol defeated Shane Hollister via pin [**½]: Things picked up with the next match. Samuray Del Sol is a guy that has been doing really well in the company, quality matches and seemingly improving each time out. I wasn’t exactly thrilled with the match announcement, as they have been doing a lot with him in EVOLE and DGUSA. But the match and victory were designed as a rehabilitation for him, and also a way to get a singles look at Hollister. It was short with one of those “finishes out of nowhere,” which didn’t really hurt either guy. The best thing to this point, although that wasn’t saying much.

    * The Super Smash Bros defeated Arik Cannon & Pinkie Sanchez via pin [***]: But thankfully things picked up with this match. Again, I am not a huge fan of Arik Cannon & Pinkie Sanchez, but Super Smash Bros are pretty damn great and have been having a great 2012, having good matches with about everyone in the states. They had another good performance and picked up another victory during their weekend. Hopefully they continue to get some run in DGUSA, I really have no clue why Super Smash Bros aren’t being used more by other places (I know PWG uses them( because they are a fun team, they have good matches and the crowd seems to dig them.

    * Open the Freedom Gate Champion Johnny Gargano defeated Chuck Taylor in an I Quit Match [****¼]: Gargano and Taylor are widely known for their tag team work on the independent scene, but have had quite the feud in EVOLVE and DGUSA. This appeared to be the big blow off, as not only did Gargano win, but he did so in a wild and violent brawl that ended with Taylor quitting. These guys used all the tricks in the book, even breaking out thumbtacks, and the style they worked isn’t used that much in the company, so it meant even more. Gargano continues to prove why he is the main the DGUSA Universe, and also continues to have great matches with just about everyone.

    * Jon Davis defeated YAMATO via pin [***]: The Jon Davis push continues and I am totally fine with that. Davis is a good power guy and has not only been working hard, but delivering with a variety of opponents. He had a good outing with YAMATO, and won clean with his finish. No muss, no fuss, no bullshit; they are booking him well and he is responding in the ring.

    * Akira Tozowa defeated El Generico via pin [***½]: Akira Tozowa vs. El Generico sounded great when announced, and they really added a nice match to the second part of this PPV. I felt that the match was good, but also taken down a bit by the interference by Christina Von Eerie. I get what they are doing with her, but I just felt as if it came off as too much here, and unfortunately hurt the match a bit. It was still good, but I do think it could have been better. Generico continues to deliver in just about every match he is in, and I will say again, he is the best non-contracted guy out there right now as far as in ring goes.

    * For The Vacant Open the United Gate Tag Team Titles: AR Fox and CIMA defeated Rich Swann and Ricochet via pin to become the new champions [****]: Closing out the show was the match for the vacant Open the United Gate Tag Team Titles. Swann and Ricochet weren’t exactly booked well the night before, and I had a feeling that they weren’t going to win here. Especially since AR Fox and CIMA were in such an awesome match the night before, and I always saw them winning, due to them being high on Fox, and due to the fact that CIMA can be a mentor of sorts to him. The match was certainly main event worthy, with this simply being a great display of tag team action. Quite honestly, some jaw dropping shit in here, and well worth your time. A great way to end the show.

    * OVERALL: DGUSA had two good iPPV events last weekend, but I liked this one a bit more than the first showing. Johnny Gargano has easily emerged as the face of the promotion, and I thing that this is a good thing. They got the tag title situation sorted out, and I really like the pairing of AR Fox with CIMA. Fox is growing as a performer, and CIMA will give him credibility with the Japanese fans. While the show started off slowly, the final five matches really delivered. They continue to build Jon Davis, with strong performances and wins, while El Generico continues to be a stand out performer for the company. They continue with good to great show, now all they have to do is get an identity that the fans can relate too and they will really have something. The one main complaint on the show is that the crowd was a bit dead at times, which was unfortunate, as this was a good show. 7.8
