Wrestling’s 4R’s 10.01.12: WWE Smackdown & TNA Impact Wrestling Reviewed

October 1, 2012 | Posted by Larry Csonka

How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. THREE if there is a PPV. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

Let’s rock…

Impact Wrestling 09.27.12 (LIVE):

QUICK RESULTS:
* World Tag Team Champion (of the World) Christopher Daniels beat Kurt Angle and Chavo Guerrero Jr. in a Triple Threat Match in 8:28 by pinning Chavo following an STO [3/6]
* Tara pinned ODB to be named the No. 1 Contender to the Knockouts Championship and earn a title shot at Bound For Glory. Tara feigned an injury and won with a small package in 4:40.match [3/6]
* Samoa Joe forced Mr. Anderson to pass out to the Rear Naked Choke in 5:00 to become the new Television Champion [3/6]
* Jeff Hardy and World Champion Austin Aries beat Bobby Roode and Bully Ray when Hardy pinned Ray with the Swanton Bomb in 13:56. [4/6]

[If you’re not familiar with these ratings, it’s my own Personal Entertainment Factor. I use a scale of 1-6 (6, in honor of the number of sides TNA’s ring should have), so there’s no middle rating.]

  • THE RIGHT:
Christopher Daniels vs. Kurt Angle vs. Chavo Guerrero, Jr.: Great triple threat match and I loved Daniels winning without really cheating to do so. This match can really surprise some people at Bound For Glory.

Championship Thursday Segments: I really liked these segments this week. There was one less, since two challengers were needed. I also like that Garett wasn’t the first one eliminated, even though he had no business being in the running.

Tara and Brooke Hogan backstage: Brooke Hogan did a good job here, and since she isn’t shoved down our throats, she hasn’t done a bad job overall.

Tara vs. ODB: I think the time is right to deactivate the Knockouts Tag Team Championships—and push ODB as a singles wrestler. She’s insanely over, and this match was more than acceptable for a women’s match.

Samoa Joe vs. Mr. Anderson for the TV Title: The match was good, and really put Joe over as a world beater. This match featured two former world champions—and both of them wanted to hold that TV title. That’s a great start to reestablishing the title.

Evan Markopoulos’ Gut Check decision: TNA got another one right, the kid isn’t ready. I think he might make it in wrestling. Won’t surprise me if ROH doesn’t go after him now! In all seriousness, he’s very young and has a great future ahead of him. TNA would be smart to quietly sign him to a developmental deal and send him to the 3D Academy (not OVW).

Bound For Glory Moment segments: While Mr. Anderson had a questionable suggestion (a match he lost), these segments are a great way to build the event as being the premier event in TNA.

Jeff Hardy & Austin Aries beat Bobby Roode & Bully Ray: Great main event match, and the right man went over.

  • PURGATORY:
Hulk Hogan’s Opening Promo: Hogan seemed overwhelmed—and that’s because he is. He has too much going on right now—especially for a non-wrestling character. And Sting’s “return?” I don’t think he was really gone that long.

Hulk Hogan & Sting in Aces & Eights Dungeon Clubhouse : Is Joseph Park a sex slave? I’d rather see that angle than see Eric Bischoff as the man behind Aces & Eights.

  • THE WRONG:
    NOTHING

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
    NOTHING

    The 411

Good episode, an improvement over last week. TNA took some big steps in the Bound For Glory build. The event is nearly sold out, and the company needs a strong two weeks headed towards this event. Next week, let’s establish the TNA team that will face Aces & Eights, figure out what’s happening with the X-Division and do something more with Bobby Roode and James Storm. And Austin Aries has to get the better of Jeff Hardy next week as well.

    SHOW RATING: 8

As a reminder, I will be going by the 411 scale…

    0 – 0.9: Torture
    1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
    2 – 2.9: Very Bad
    3 – 3.9: Bad
    4 – 4.9: Poor
    5 – 5.9: Not So Good
    6 – 6.9: Average
    7 – 7.9: Good
    8 – 8.9:Very Good
    9 – 9.9: Amazing
    10: Virtually Perfect

    Smackdown! 09.28.12:
    QUICK RESULTS
US Title Match Antonio Cesaro © defeated Santino @ 4:09 via pin [*½]
    – Beth Phoenix defeated Natalya @ 4:15 via pin [**]
    – Wade Barrett defeated Zack Ryder @ 3:15 via pin [*½]
Tag Team Tournament Match: The Rhodes Scholars defeated The Usos @ 2:00 via pin [NR]
    – Ryback defeated Tensai @ 2:00 via pin [NR]
#1 Contender’s Match: The Big Show defeated Randy Orton @ 12:30 via pin [**]

  • THE RIGHT:
Beth Phoenix defeated Natalya: Beth Phoenix defeated Natalya in a short, but quality match on Smackdown this week. The sad part is that some are heralding this as the greatest women’s match in years. No friends, this was a good quality match, because it had two skilled workers and they got more then 90-seconds. Not trying to be a buzz kill, I understand why people think so; because WWE Women’s Wrestling (and TNA for the most part as well) has been SHIT lately. Anyway, good and quality work here by both ladies, who should obviously have been used better for years. They also used this to continues with the “Kaitlyn’s attacker” angle, as Eve suspended Beth. I also liked Natalya bitching Beth out and saying she had nothing to do with the attack. This all comminuted into a backstage segment with Booker T. That saw Beth complaining about the suspension, and of course Booker had no idea what she was talking about. Eve, being the evil mastermind she is, comes in to blame Teddy for the whole situation. I like fake nice but truly evil bitch Eve, I liked the good wrestling match, see WWE, you CAN do this if you really want to.

Wade Barrett defeated Zack Ryder: Wade Barrett defeated Zack Ryder on Smackdown this week, keeping the Barrett Barrage rolling along. This match as about what you would expect, three minutes, Barrett dominates, Ryder got his spots of hope in, and then ate the old elbow to the face for the finish. I think that they have handled the Barrett return well, as I had stated numerous times that his images needed rehabbed. Barrett, since coming back, has been treated as a bad ass, and is simply beating people. They are working to establish the new finish as well as the fact that he is a winner. While they do not have a feud for him right now, they certainly have enough TV time to get him out there and continue the momentum. If they have no plans for the HIAC PPV with Barrett, I hope they simply keep doing what they have been with him, and then after that PPV, give him a solid feud and direction. But as for now, I feel they are doing a solid job of rehabbing his image.

Ryback defeated Tensai: Regardless of your thoughts on the whole Tensai experiment, I think that this was a well done segment. Ryback is coming off of a victory over the IC Champion Miz on Raw, and was also given the big stand off with CM Punk to end Raw. We have heard numerous times Vince McMahon is high on Ryback, and they seem to be serious about him. So to follow that up on Smackdown, they had him take on another big guy in Tensai. Tensai got some shit in on Ryback, and then Ryback did his thing and got a dominant victory over Tensai. I will admit that Ryback is far from great in the ring, but at the same time I am asking for something new. They are getting behind him booking wise, the crowds are reacting to him well, and at the end of the day, it is better to try with him then to give up without ever giving him a chance. Feed him more.

  • PURGATORY:
OPENING TALKY BIT: The opening of Smackdown had the returning Big Show discussing the destruction of Clay and Tensai, and also the fact that it has been eating at him that his last title run only lasted 45-seconds. But he felt that he was the only man that could put a stop to Sheamus’ reign as champion. Randy Orton came out at that point to inform Show that their scheduled main event was now a #1 contenders match. In theory it is fine, it sets up motivation, Del Rio got punked to set up the main event stuff as well, but I just have no interest in seeing either guy challenging for a title at this point and time.

Antonio Cesaro © defeated Santino: US Champion Antonio Cesaro defeated Santino in the opening match on the show. The match was to follow last week’s deal where Cesaro lost to Santino, and then Cesaro dropped Aksana (in five different languages) for costing him the match. That is all well and good, but at this point, it feels as if they are just running in place with Cesaro. Forget the fact that he could be and should be having better matches with a more quality opponent; they just need to advance him and do it soon. The Santino stuff was fine because of the crowd reactions, but now he needs a serious feud, something to show his ability and to hopefully make the US Title mean something.

The Rhodes Scholars defeated The Usos: They officially announced the tag team tournament on the show, in order to crown #1 contenders for the tag team titles. I am all for this, because it is an actual effort to spotlight the tag teams. In the first match, The Rhodes Scholars defeated The Usos, which was the right decision, although I thought it was too short. In my opinion, you’re basically starting from scratch with the tag teams. The Rhodes Scholars are just formed and the Usos are an established team, and while they got some run, I would have appreciated a longer match, showing them as a real challenge. Finally, and on more of a personal note, I do love the added emphasis on tag team wrestling, but am not totally buying it. Right now it is good, Bryan and Kane are the stars for now, but the true test will be AFTER they lose the titles. Everyone thought tag teams were back with the Hart Dynasty, and we all see how that went. Hopefully they are serious this time, because with three hour Raw shows and the addition of WWE Main Event, they have a lot of time to fill and a lot of guys that need to be used, and the tag team division is an answer to that.

Main Event: In execution I suppose that you can call the main event segment of Smackdown a win, unfortunately this also did nothing for me. The Del Rio attack on Orton made sense, and led to Orton playing resilient babyface against Show in the man event. Orton eventually lost to Show, who is now the new #1 contender. For what they booked it was a fine match, but if you ask me if I am excited about Big Show challenging for the title, the answer is no. Some will say that they have little to no choice but to do that at this time, but I again say that if you would have actually booked some mid-card guys effectively, you would have had more choices instead of going back to Big Show. But again, that’s just my opinion.

  • THE WRONG:
MIZ TV: Following the second edition of Miz TV, I can easily say that the show does nothing for me. If the goal each time out is to make Miz look like a complete jobber and idiot, then they accomplished what they were going for, but I kind of doubt that. Sheamus got to run him down, Dolph came out to spin his wheels some more, there was a brawl and it was a segment, one that did nothing for me this week. I like Miz more than most, but they are not exactly giving him the best stuff to work with in order to make him seem like a big star with his own segment out there.

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
    NOTHING

    The 411

In my opinion, just an average show. They did some good things, and the stuff in the wrong is more based on personal preference; being that it is stuff I don’t want to see. It was a passable show, once again filled with a lot of Raw videos, which also unfortunately means that if you missed it, you missed nothing.

    SHOW RATING: 6.0

    0 – 0.9: Torture
    1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
    2 – 2.9: Very Bad
    3 – 3.9: Bad

    5 – 5.9: Not So Good
    6 – 6.9: Average
    7 – 7.9: Good
    8 – 8.9: Very Good
