Wrestling’s 4R’s 10.19.12: WWE Raw, TNA Bound For Glory & ROH on Sinclair

October 19, 2012 | Posted by Larry Csonka

How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week, THREE if there is a PPV to review. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and need discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

Let’s rock…

QUICK THOUGHTS

First of all, I would like to offer my apologies for not providing the usual PPV edition of the R’s on Tuesday as always. I had some stuff go on this week, plus I had to cover the show Sunday night, and it just didn’t happen. I will go with the quick thoughts format.

TNA Bound for Glory as come and gone, and as far as wrestling the show delivered pretty well, with only the two matches most thought would be poor being just that. RVD vs. Ion was a solid opening match that made the crowd happy because they got to see a star and a title change. While that is all well and good, the piss poor booking of the X-Division is so frustrating, because Ion was a guy they could have run with for a bit, but with no real division, it almost doesn’t even matter. Instead they had to go to RVD, because he used to be a big star. I also expect a Dusty finish, due to the old weight limit deal that they conveniently forgot about, but then had Ion mention in a pre-PPV video.

Samoa Joe and Magnus was another good match, with Joe busting ass and Magnus continuing to improve. I liked that they didn’t do the title switch just yet, Magnus still has a bit to go, but he could be a player for them.

James Storm vs. Robert Roode was just about everything I hoped it would be. While I would have loved to see them in the old school street clothes for the match, they delivered a bloody and feud ending (we hope) brawl. Mo’s interaction was limited, and since TNA hasn’t busted out the thumbtacks in so long, I didn’t mind that either. Storm tapped an artery as well to give those that miss blood in wrestling what they had been wanting as well.

Ryan vs. Snow was unfortunately what I thought it would be, which is a shame. The addition of Morgan is fine I suppose, and am willing to see where it goes.

The tag title match was good, but not great, but not everything can be labeled as great. A slow first half followed by a very energetic second half made for good times. I loved Daniels and Kaz as the champs, and the crowd really didn’t like the title change. Chavo continually bringing up Eddie in and out of the ring doesn’t do him any favors either.

The Knockouts title match was about as you would expect, and the reveal of Jesse from Big Brother as Tara’s “boo” was met with complete apathy.

The TNA vs. Aces and Eights match was fine and about what it needed to be. Bully painted up like Sting was a fun moment, and they worked well together again. With the No DQ stipulation added, you knew there would be run ins, and that is what led to Aces and Eights winning the match and full access. The post match was a mix, Hogan coming down for him big moment got a reaction, but nothing like last year. With the feud switched to center more on him, they certainly lost steam. For those that said, “no one called Devon,” look around the internet, many people had the theory that Devon’s contract stuff was a work. The reveal of Devon was needed, as they hadn’t revealed anyone as of that time, and as long as he is NOT the actual leader, then I will be fine with it. I am taking a wait and see approach with it. Credit to Ray for selling the fact that Devon was unmasked, he was awesome as always in the match.

The main event really caused a mixed reaction among fans. The match itself was very good, and worthy of the main event spot, but I have mixed emotions on the booking. The title change seems like TNA just trying to please and keep Hardy and I understand that. The heel turn by Aries right before the show didn’t click with me, at all, and I really thought he had more to offer as the champion. I didn’t throw my hands up and renounce TNA with the title change, but I did think to myself, “Jeff Hardy? Eh…”

While an entertaining PPV for the most part, I feel that the company took a step backwards. They ran hot during the BGF series, and then got cold heading into the big show of the year. And then, as a reaction to that, they go with RVD, Chavo and Jeff Hardy as the answers. Add in the fact that they cut Storm vs. Roode off early as far as their main program, and it just goes to show that while the promotion has improved a lot this year, they also still have a long way to go. Well, that’s just one man’s opinion. An overall good showing from TNA, but not quite the show I think they needed to deliver as their big show, it just felt like any other show, which is what I feared heading in.

SHOW RATING: 7.5

What the numbers mean..

0 – 0.9: Torture
1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
2 – 2.9: Very Bad
3 – 3.9: Bad
4 – 4.9: Poor
5 – 5.9: Not So Good
6 – 6.9: Average
7 – 7.9: Good
8 – 8.9: Very Good
9 – 9.9: Amazing
10: Virtually Perfect

As a reminder, this is not a basic “how good was the show” number like a TV show, as I have always felt that a PPV is very different from a regular show. I have always judged PPV on how they built to a match, the match quality, crowd reactions to matches and angles, the overall booking, how the PPV leads into the future, PPV price and so on and so forth. I have added this in here for an explanation since so many have asked, and I have previously discussed it on podcasts. I understand that this may seem different, but that is how I grade. Obviously your criteria may be different.

ROH Television 10.13.12:

QUICK RESULTS:
* Davey Richards def. Mike Bennett (Survival of the Fittest)
* Jay Lethal def. QT Marshall (Survival of the Fittest)
* Kevin Steen def. Rhett Titus (World Championship)

  • THE RIGHT:
Davey Richards vs. Mike Bennett – I have to say, once again, that ever since he worked with Lance Storm, Mike Bennett has been a changed wrestler. He is getting really good in the ring. Now, put him against one of the best in the business in Davey Richards, and you know it can be special. This match was a really good one, Davey’s first match back from his break from ROH. Both men got in good offense and Davey finally won with a sick running kick to Bennett’s face. They also kept Bennett strong by having Mondo distract him, leading to the eventual decision. I also like how Richards is showing more character in the ring, making fun of Maria at one point, and is not just a stone-faced robot. My only problem is that Richards sold a hurt ankle from earlier in the match all the way through but hit two nice moves that required strong feet to do so. Other than that, very nice return for Davey.

Barrister RD Evans – No one should be surprised at this, but RD Evans sold it well. He came out to the ring with Tomasso Ciampa and explained to the audience how Ciampa tore his ACL at the start of his match with Jay Lethal at the last iPPV, but continued to fight for 20 more minutes on the bad knee. He then said that Ciampa was a warrior, a gladiator and a thoroughbred, but like all thoroughbreds with a broken leg, he would put Ciampa down. He then said what I suspected last week when he said his “client” would wrestle in the tournament, and he brought out his new client. It was QT Marshall, and Evans turned on Ciampa and beat him down the same way he did Prince Nana. On a side note, when Prince Nana came out during the match and DESTROYED Evans, it was a great TV. That shows how well built Evans is now as an evil manager.

Steve Corino and Nigel McGuinness – These two guys are probably the best pairing on commentary I have heard in years. They are just perfect together. It’s too bad Kevin Kelly brings the quality down.

  • PURGATORY:
Jay Lethal vs. QT Marshall – This match was a good match, as should be expected from Survival of the Fittest. However, I question RD Evans introducing his new client, only for him to lose his first match. Of course, Lethal had to win here, which made it a tough situation. Both men got in a lot of offense, and the final Lethal Injection was nicely hit. But, the match was not the best start for Evans and Marshall’s relationship and I question the booking of the match itself.

  • THE WRONG:
Kevin Kelly approves of Mike Mondo – During the match between Davey Richards and Mike Bennett, Nigel McGuinness started to talk about how Mike Mondo molesting Maria is sexual harassment. That is when Kevin Kelly said the inexplicable. He basically said that Mondo was just doing it to mess with Mike Bennett (which is true) and it is just harmless playing with Maria. The way he said it made it sound like Mondo and Maria were 10-year-olds and it’s cute to force yourself on a woman. My problem is that it made Kelly sound ignorant and really sent out the wrong message. When Mondo did it again during this match, Kelly giggled and once again said Mondo was just playing around.

Foreshadowing the Fall of the House of Truth – During Inside Ring of Honor, they didn’t so much as foreshadow the fall of the House of Truth, but they instead rewrote the book on how to write “promos for dummies.” By now, we all know that the House of Truth died at last weekend’s PPV. Roddy Strong quit, Michael Elgin pushed Truth away and Rhino press slammed him out of the ring after his loss. However, this week (before the iPPV aired), they showed a promo of clipped quotes with Rhino saying he won’t back down from any man, Elgin saying he was going to tear down the house if it was built around Strong, and Strong saying he was going to teach Elgin a lesson. All the while, Truth was preaching that all would turn out ok. The format of the broken interview clips was poorly done and this promo just pretty much sucked.

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
Kevin Steen vs. Rhett Titus – I have two major problems with this match. First of all, what has Rhett Titus ever done to deserve a world championship match. Sure, the WWE and TNA like to hand them out like candy, but Ring of Honor usually only has deserving challengers. That changed when Jim Cornette said that every match Kevin Steen has will be a world title match to try to get the belt off him. However, Cornette refused to give Jay Lethal a title shot because he lacked “killer instinct” but gives one to Titus? Second of all, Titus is the dumbest wrestler in the world. He gets a world title shot, and when Jimmy Jacobs brings the spike into play, he takes it and – IN FRONT OF THE REFEREE – wants to hit Steen with it. The referee is telling him no, and he sets up to use it anyway, which would lead to a DQ, and he would lose in his first ever chance to win the title. He deserved to lose this match. Idiot.

    The 411

The opening match with Davey and Bennett was fantastic. The next match dropped some in quality and made no sense and the final match never should have happened to begin with. As for the promos, RD Evans replacing Tomasso Ciampa was perfection and the House of Truth promo was horrendous. This show was so up-and-down. The best parts, easily, was the Davey match, the Evans promo and the fun commentary with Corino and McGuinness for the main event.

    WWE RAW 10.15.12:
    QUICK RESULTS
    – The Big Show Defeated Daniel Bryan [**]
    – Alberto Del Rio Defeated Brodus Clay [*]
    – The Prime Time Players Defeated Team CoBro [*]
    – Ryback Defeated Dolph Ziggler and David Otunga [1/2*]
    – Antonio Cesaro Defeated Justin Gabriel [*1/2]
    – Kane Defeated Matt Striker [NR]
    – Sheamus Defeated Wade Barrett Via DQ [***]
    – Eve Defeated Layla [**]
    – The Rhodes Scholars Defeated Primo and Epico [**]
    – Kofi Defeated The Miz [**1/2]

  • THE RIGHT:
TAKE ME SERIOUSLY: For whatever reason, not many people are involved or interested in the World Heavyweight Championship and the upcoming match between Sheamus and Show, but I have to say that I’m enjoying the build, even if it’s in the backseat. I don’t think that Sheamus is losing the belt to Show, let alone anytime soon, but it’s a nice way to keep things moving. Show wants to be taken seriously, and Sheamus has been laughing him off, only for Show to show that he’s not to be taken lightly. It’s simple, yet affective. Anyways, Show’s promo lead into a match with Daniel Bryan that was actually kind of fun. Show looked good, and I don’t think Bryan is hurt in the least, particularly because this stems from when Bryan beat him and even lead into some booking for next week. It wasn’t flabbergasting, but it was effective and useful, so it gets a pass from me.

PUNK TEASE: I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one that saw the swerve here, as it was only obvious. However, it did just add a bit more to the heelness of Punk. They’re trying so hard to get people to hate him, and it’s actually working. Punk’s promo had a few small jabs at the incident from last week, essentially say he’ll slap a fan if they disrespect him, without being blatant about it. Vince coming out to kill the moment was also effective, as it comes from last week and continues a story that caused people to continue watching, something I hear they’re struggling with.

MIZ TV: This little new segment with Miz hasn’t really taken off like I assumed it would, considering I like The Miz in and out of the ring. The past few “episodes” have been pretty crappy, and The Miz has yet to get the upper hand. Tonight was a little different, and I like to think a lot had to do with The Miz and Kofi hitting the small gray area that is wrestling. We have all seen, numerous times throughout the years, critics hit Kofi with the “just on the cusp” comments, and they didn’t shy away from pointing that very thing out during this segment. The Miz called him out, and Kofi accepted it and refuted it with a call out to a match. I thought The Miz would object, but they went for it, and what a nice little match that was. OK, the match was average, but that kick was vicious!! I hope Kofi doesn’t get reprimanded for that, because it may very well be the injection that he needed.

I also have to applaud them for hyping up what is probably deemed by all as A D-Show in Main Event. Sure, this won’t last too long, but for now they are really pumping it up, as this felt like a PPV build. I don’t know how long this possible Kofi push will last, but I hope it’s a worthy one.

SHEAMUS CAN WRESTLE: Yet again, Sheamus proves himself when he doesn’t have to. Sheamus and Wade had themselves another balls to the wall match that saw Barrett get a whole lot of brutality across. If they’re lining Wade up for a possible title shot, they’re doing a great job, as Wade has a built in excuse with his match being interrupted twice week in a row. They played off of their match from last week well, without making it look too much of the same, and made me interested in a possible match between them in the future.

DIVAS CON HUEVOS: While the match between Eve and Layla didn’t set the world on fire, I was pretty impressed by Eve. Layla actually didn’t look as crisp as usual, and it was Eve that looked like the general in the ring. True, the ending was a bit sloppy, and this was still average wrestling in comparison to what we’ve seen from girls outside of the WWE, but there’s focus, there’s a story, and there’s ample time. Keep it up, WWE.

MYSTERIO BE HURTIN: So a stomach virus has caused the tag team competition to be pushed a week forward and due to that, we get another opportunity to see Rhodes and Sandow team up and show how much “smarter” they are than others. Nothing too intense, and kind of a run-of-the-mill match, but good enough for me, as it showed the brains of the superior team are simply that; superior.

KOFI – 1 THE MIZ’S HEAD – 0: While the match itself was something we’ve seen many times over, there was something different here, and it wasn’t just that damned kick. The aggression and fire was there within Kofi, and the shit talking during the match, coupled with the intensity of the crowd, really added to everything else – especially….THAT KICK!!

FEED HIM SMORES!: And now we come to Ryback and the push that coincided with a Cena injury. I’ll be the first to say that I had to shut my mouth once Ryback’s numerous squashes started getting him some major supporters. I will stand by my stance that this push is still more of a miss than a hit for any new superstar coming up, but Bah Gawd, Ryback is over and he’s got the crowd firmly behind him. I may be in the minority, but I’m not sure I liked Cena basically handing the shot over, as it just totally feels like he’s doing Ryback a favor and minimizes something that they’ve built up for weeks on weeks on weeks; the importance of the title to Cena and how he is “unstoppable” and going to be there. I know he’s injured, and I definitely don’t want him in the match, but what this means is that if/when Punk wins, we’re going to get Cena continue with the same ol tired story that we’ve been hearing for months that Punk STILL hasn’t beat him. It’s just tiring, and I feel that Ryback is simply a placeholder for the time being as Cena heels, which totally negates the match AND makes me wonder what Ryback will be doing afterwards.

  • PURGATORY:
BYE BYE BRODUS: In the first of far too many squash matches, we get Del Rio taking on Brodus Clay, who doesn’t even get an intro – which shows how much he’s fallen in terms of importance. I didn’t disagree with the win, since Del Rio will be having the PPV match this week, while Brodus will be…Brodus. I did, however, dislike the length and seemingly unimportant feel that over masked the match. They didn’t do anything wRong, but this match just started an hour plus long trend of matches that just didn’t seem to matter.

PRIME TIME?: Although I love the focus on tag teams, and I appreciate that they are not just dropping the fact that there are teams out there, simply because they’re not in the title contest, this match was pretty short and pointless, similar to the one above. Again, the right person won but it seemed more like a filler than anything important. It also lead to something that just….well, just doesn’t work. Who?
3MB. I will applaud them for getting somewhat matching attire, but it’s just not working for me. I have a long history of hating Heath, McIntyre has lost all interest, and Mahal was actually growing into his own recently. Now, we have Heath being Heath, we have Drew looking retarded, and Jinder looking all kinds of uncomfortable.

SUE ME MORE: And then we get to the third match in a row that has no reason to be there. We already know Ryback is a beast, we already know that David Otunga is worthless, and we already know that Dolph is supposed to be a chickenshit. This didn’t help or hurt, but kind of just wasted time – which is alright considering we want to get these guys TV time, but it seemed to be there just to be there, with no actual movement forward, aside from Dolph’s promo, which was more of the same. But HELLLLOOOO AJ!

VOTE CESARO FOR A BETTER TOMORROW: Three matches with a short bell-to-bell time wasn’t good enough for you?! How bout one more! Again, this was a match that didn’t really hurt anything, but at the end of the night meant very little. I love Cesaro’s push, think he’s completely deserving, and feel that he’s got a moveset that is different enough to set himself apart, but where’s the emotional pull and investment, why should we care, and where will he go from here?

SAVE OUR SCHOOLS, HUG A TEACHER: And here we go with Match number five IN A ROW that was short, meant little, and had pretty much minimal wrestling involved. Sure, it’s fun to see Bryan and Kane, but by this time, I was just done with the squash matches and was ready for something else.

  • THE WRONG:
    NOTHING

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
5 TIME! 5 TIME! 5 TIME!: Really?! Five matches in a row that were just utterly pointless?! This was ridiculous, and really killed A LOT of the momentum of the show for me. I don’t care about ratings, and I hate talking about them, but the WWE does care and I’m telling you now, an hour’s worth of wrestling that is essentially pointless and not worth a damn is NOT what you want to do if you’re attempting to KEEP an audience. This was a bad decision and a bad hour that is yet again, more proof that the three-hour model just doesn’t work.

    The 411

Let’s hope that you forgot what time RAW started and caught the last hour and a half or so, because the first hour was pretty pointless, even IF Punk and Show had good promos/moments. It’s such a shame, too, because from Miz and Kofi onward, it was a solid show.
