Wrestling’s 4R’s 4.29.13: WWE Smackdown & TNA IMPACT Wrestling Reviewed
How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

QUICK RESULTS:
NOTE FROM JACK: Just wanted to let you all know that I am still abroad for work, and this week’s stuff may be a bit less verbose than you may expect. I do apologize, but the whole real world job is a bitch and I also had to complete my MMA news column as well. Thanks for understanding.
Teasing a Fortune Reunion: The show opened with James Storm coming to the ring to address the whole AJ Styles situation. He noticed AJ in the crowd and was speaking to him, when Bad Influence made their appearance. They wanted to get the band back together and reform fortune to battle the Aces and 8s. Storm wasn’t thrilled with this, and got laid out for his troubles. Aces and 8s then hit the ring to beat him down further, Park tried to make the save and got his ass beat as well. This led to Ray reiterating that he would be calling out Hulk Hogan later in the show to make him their latest victim. Aces and 8s continue to roll, the TNA stars cannot yet come together for the betterment of the company and this was a good way to kick off the show.
Taryn Terrell defeated Tara: Taryn Terrell defeated Tara in very solid women’s match. Taryn is working hard and improvements from her WWE days are evident, but still, it never hurts to have her work with Gail and then Tara if you think that she will be something important to the division. The basics story was that the veteran knew all the tricks to take and keep control, but that her over confidence cost her in the end.
Chavo and Hernandez defeated Aries and Roode: Chavo and Hernandez defeated Aries and Roode to retain the tag team titles. Daniels and Kazarian were at ringside and were heavily involved in the match, which may have normally upset me, but with Bad Influence trying to get Roode to join them like they did with AJ, it made perfect sense. The match wasn’t their best, due to all of the extracurricular activities at ringside, but damn if it didn’t make me want to see Roode & Aries vs. Bad Influence even more. This was an overall good segment.
Matt Morgan Has a Solution: For the most part I really enjoyed the Matt Morgan interview segment. He has been mocking Hogan for all of his mistakes, and came out to make sure we all knew that. He then came out, stood tall to Hogan and stated that he was the solution that Hogan and TNA needed. He added that he would take care of the problem for Hogan, for a price. That price, the title shot at Slammiversary. Hogan finally spoke noting that he made mistakes and was hoping that Morgan would step up to be the man, but he didn’t, and that Hogan would go to the ring to meet Ray later tonight. He closed it out noting that Andre the Giant never acted like a bitch. Overall good stuff and the first time I actually cared for Morgan in forever.
NOTHING
Rob Terry defeated Jessie Godderz: This was another boring squash match for Rob Terry. I believe that they see something in him since he is big and jacked, but in his entire run in TNA, the man has shown no ability to cut a promo or to truly connect with their audience.
Velvet Sky defeated Mickie James: Man, this match I felt had a ton of potential on a few levels. And they started out strong too, but unfortunately the match started to fall apart, Velvet forgot to see the knee a lot down the stretch (jumping clotheslines, really?) and it ended on a whimper with the shitty roll up finish where they were all caught up in the ropes. The other thing here is that the crowd has been really into the TNA ladies, and after Mickie getting the title shot and laying out the heel promo, I felt that this week was the perfect time to flip the switch with James. Sky is hurt, James heels it up and wins and celebrates. The next week Velvet calls her out on it, James says it was a misunderstanding in the fire of competition; some heels get involved to set up a tag match. Do the match; the heels work over Sky, she works for the hot tag and James walks away to cement things. TNA really missed the boat here I believe, plus that match was not good.
Sting and Hogan Save the Day: TNA was building to the main event of the show with the Hogan vs. Bully confrontation. Now I know that this is where all of the “put the title on Hogan” trolls come out, but this segment ended up exactly the way I thought it would. Hulk Hogan and Sting saved the day, they cleared the ring of the menace and THEY look like the stars after all of TNA’s faces have been taken out. I am a big fan of TNA, I like it more than most and most weeks feel that they give me a better program than Raw does; but it is shit like this that I feel hurts the product and makes me not want to watch. They likely have a plan and all of that jazz, but after weeks of ass beatings and looking superior, 59-year old Hulk Hogan, 54-year old sting and his 16-year old baseball bat got to stand tall. It didn’t feel fun; it didn’t make me happy, it just made me want to turn the channel.
NOTHING
This week’s show was a real mixed bag. Some really good promo segments and one that drove me insane. Some really good in ring action, and then some really bad in ring action. It seems that when ever TNA seems t be really moving forward, they always fall back into old tricks. This was a solid show with enjoyable elements, just almost as many that were not enjoyable. Show Rating: 6.0 As a reminder, I will be going by the 411 scale… 0 – 0.9: Torture |

Smackdown! 04.26.13:
QUICK RESULTS
– Jack Swagger Defeated Alberto Del Rio [***]
– Layla Defeated Aksana [1/2*]
– Fandango Defeated Justin Gabriel [*]
– The Big Show Defeated Sheamus [**1/2]
– Wade Barrett Defeated William Regal [NR]
– Mark Henry Defeated Randy Orton via DQ [**]
– The Undertaker Defeated Dean Ambrose [*1/2]
SWAGGER-RIO: The No DQ stip caused for an intense start, but somewhere along the line it let up a bit and the match came off as a pale comparison of their others. This isn’t a knock, because it was still a very good match, but the implementation of weaponry added little to the match in terms of entertainment value. In fact, I’d say that it would have been just as solid without, especially considering how quickly the end came. Still, this all served a purpose and kept Swagger strong without hurting Del Rio. I loved the story they tried to tell, and I’m very much looking forward to the triple threat.
SHEAMUS VS SHOW:I think they’ve really gotten as much as they can out of these two in the ring together. Another solid match on the show that only vaguely suffered due to the familiarity of it all. It sucks, but seeing the White Noise on Show isn’t surprising anymore. Still, for storyline purposes, this worked. I don’t know if Orton and Show will be going one-on-one come Extreme Rules, but it seems that way, and if that’s the case, Smackdown did the tried and true mixing of matches and their opponents. I loved Henry’s little minor interruption, and Show gave one of the more convincing KO punches.
ORTON AND HENRY: This stems off of the match previously noted, and continued the feuds that all four men are entangled in. Although the match was cut a bit short, there was some interesting developments. I don’t know if Mathews aside was just that, or if it was the planting of a seed for Orton when he claimed Orton didn’t look too happy with the loss due to Sheamus. Whatever it is, it was simple booking that is leading to something.
MEAN DEAN: Ambrose got the main event slot on Smackdown, and deservedly so. Against The Undertaker, no less! The match was short, but the match wasn’t actually as important as the aftermath of said match. The beat down of Taker is one of the bigger coups the group has received as they continue their carnage across both shows. I’m loving what they’re doing here, and if we get a six man at Extreme Rules, I’m going to be pretty damned happy. It’s one of the few moments in wrestling where I don’t know how they’re going to keep me interested, yet they continue to do so.
DIVAS: It’s nice to see Layla getting some hometown love, the thing is, it won’t matter much next week. The match itself was standard, and Aksana still looks very green in there. Not that there was anything wRong with it, there was just a complete lack of care and seemed only there to get Layla on the show….which, who can complain, right?
FANDANGO: They need to be really careful here. Squash matches do not make new superstars (unless you look like you should be squashing wrestlers). It’s nice to see the crowd support for Fandango, but if they keep this up, it will wane.
BARRETT BARRAGE: I said it in the Fandango section, but I feel it means so much more here. Wade is the IC Champ, a title that – at one point – meant some bad ass wrestling. Imagine, if given the time, what a match (a legit match) against Regal would have done for Barrett… Using the same mentality of Layla, though, they opted to do this for Regal’s sake. Send him out, make the fans happy at that moment, and give Barrett a squash win. On a show that had some quality wrestling, I won’t call this Ridiculous, but as a stand alone segment that could have really done something for Wade’s character AND the title, they screwed the pooch…and will likely continue to do so.
NO DOLPH: Again? Come on!
NOTHING
The UK brought out the best in Smackdown, it appears, as tonight’s show was no-nonsense and full of solid wrestling. I think – for yet another week – Dolph Ziggler not showing up is a bit detrimental, but I was distracted by some great in-ring performances enough to not call it Ridiculous. SHOW RATING: 8.5 |
