Wrestling’s 4R’s 5.20.13: TNA Impact Reviewed

May 20, 2013 | Posted by Maxwell Baumbach

How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

Impact 5.16.13:
By: Maxwell Baumbach

QUICK MATCH RESULTS:

  • Bobby Roode beat Chavo Guerrero Jr. by DQ
  • Jay Bradley beat Christian York
  • Velvet Sky beat Gail Kim
  • X-Division Title Match: Kenny King (c) beat Petey Williams and Chris Sabin
  • Hernandez beat Christopher Daniels
  • Joseph Park beat D-Lo Brown

    THE RIGHT:
Bully Ray and Sting contract signing: This segment was electric. Bully Ray agreeing to the stipulation on the basis that Sting can never wrestle for the TNA World Championship again was a nice touch. While I fear that this may lead to Sting winning the belt, this segment was fantastic and did a great job of adding hype to their match at Slammiversary. With fewer pay-per-views, it is critical that their main-events feel important, and these two helped accomplish that here.

D-Lo Brown vs. Joseph Park/post-match: I’ve gotten more annoyed with the Joseph Park character than most as of late, and I can’t stand to see him in the ring. That said, this was one of his best matches in a long time. D-Lo had his working boots on, busting out a Shining Wizard and a Sliding D. Joseph Park Abyssing-up and doing the pose post-match before coming to was great. This may have marked a critical point in the evolution of the Joseph Park character.

X-Division build and Kenny King vs. Chris Sabin vs. Petey Williams: TNA made a smart move by using some television time to hype up this match. Sabin and King were great when talking, and they made this match seem important. The match itself was fun and crisp. Kenny King actually getting the win with his finisher was good, and it made him look stronger than he did in his other recent outings. Taking Petey out of the mix was the right move, and I think adding Suicide into the picture is probably the most interesting thing they could do to add to the King/Sabin dynamic.

Jay Bradley vs. Christian York and the Gut-Check hype segments: While the Gutcheck hasn’t been a phenomenal success, York and Bradley’s segments made it seem important. That match itself was okay, but Bradley getting the win moves it into the right. We’ve seen what York has to offer; he carries himself well, but his offense is slow and awkward. Having Bradley advance to Slammiversary creates a much more refreshing scenario. With that in mind, I think it would be advantageous of TNA to keep Bradley on television more so that we can get a better idea of what his character is. He came off as likable during his vignette, but acted more heelish in the ring. It will be hard for Bradley to excel unless there is more clarity about him in the eyes of the fans.

Kurt Angle calls out AJ Styles, Anderson interrupts: According to Anderson, AJ Styles will be joining Aces and Eights next week. However, after AJ took Angle out with a kick to the head, Anderson left through the crowd, and AJ walked up the ramp. This little touch added more intrigue to how things will go next week. They managed to hype the AJ/Angle match at Slammiversary and draw questions as to whether AJ is actually joining Aces and Eights or not.

  • puRgatoRy:
Christopher Daniels vs. Hernandez : I’m sick of Chavo and Hernandez holding the belts when everyone else around them comes across as more talented and more over. Hernandez should also stop doing his Super Mex stage dive every match. It has become predictable and less shocking. If he saved it for bigger occasions, it would get a better reception.

Gail Kim vs. Velvet Sky: TNA has the right idea with Gail Kim, which is to build her up as a woman who maims her opponents. The way that she targeted the leg of Velvet Sky during their match was compelling, and set up her post-match attack even better. However, during her run of taking out the other TNA Knockouts, she has been losing. A lot. Like I said, TNA has the right idea. That said, the execution has been lacking. The only way Gail Kim can seem truly dangerous is if she can take out her opponents during matches as well.

Bobby Roode vs. Chavo Guerrero: There isn’t much to say about this match beyond “it happened” and “it never got going.”

The opening segment: One of the best ways to start a wrestling show is to announce a match that entices fans to stay tuned for the rest of it. TNA used this valuable segment to set up a match between a comedy character and a career-long midcarder; Joseph Park vs. D-Lo Brown. While the match ended up being alright, I think that they could have set it up differently and gotten better use out of the opening segment.

  • THE WRONG:
James Storm is a dick: James Storm acted like a hypocrite and an angry child this week. First off, when confronted by a cameraman, he refused to speak, but eventually caved in and only said a few cryptic words. However, when AJ Styles acted that way in past episode of Impact, James Storm became furious with him. He also came out to the ring and spit beer in Bobby Roode’s face. This would be okay if he were a heel, but he’s not. I also doubt that he will be turning heel because WALMART, BROTHER! While babyfaces don’t have to be angels, the ones that get over on bad behavior are badasses, not dicks. For the last several weeks, James Storm has been a dick. If he ran around kicking people in the face instead of spitting on them, looked like he gave a shit about his friends, and didn’t whine all the times, James Storm would be likable. Instead, he’s just a dick.
  • THE RIDICULOUS:
Divorces: How do they work?: When Bully Ray approached Brooke Hogan backstage, she made a remark about hoping he files for divorce. However, Bully said he would never divorce her. This made Brooke upset. Now, let’s think about this for a second: Brooke, as a citizen of the United States of America, has the right to file for a divorce. This means one of three things: 1) Brooke Hogan will eventually turn heel, and is in on it. This is the most logical solution, but should probably be revealed soon. 2) We are supposed to think that Brooke Hogan’s character is one of the dumbest human beings that ever lived on planet earth, and no one that is close to her cares enough about her to steer her in the right direction. 3) TNA thinks their audience is completely stupid and has no idea how marriage works.

    The 411:

TNA ultimately delivered a pretty good show this week. Even some of the things that I wasn’t looking forward to, such as Park/Brown, turned out to be all right. The contract signing was great and made the Slammiversary main-event look like a huge deal to the fans and both men involved. The in-ring action was just average, and there are still some inexplicable things going on, but that was made up for by the good stuff.

    Show Rating: 6.0

As a reminder, I will be going by the 411 scale…

    0 – 0.9: Torture
    1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
    2 – 2.9: Very Bad
    3 – 3.9: Bad
    4 – 4.9: Poor
    5 – 5.9: Not So Good
    6 – 6.9: Average
    7 – 7.9: Good
    8 – 8.9:Very Good
    9 – 9.9: Amazing
    10: Virtually Perfect
