Wrestling’s 4Rs 5.24.13: WWE Monday Night Raw & ROH TV Reviewed

May 24, 2013 | Posted by Tony Acero

How the 4Rs of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and need discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

ROH Television 05.18.13:
QUICK RESULTS:
-Jimmy Jacobs def. Jay Lethal
-SCUM def. C&C Wrestling Factory
-Adam Cole def. Kevin Steen

  • THE RIGHT:
Jay Lethal vs. Jimmy Jacobs – This is the match I have been waiting on for the last two years. I wasn’t actually watching Ring of Honor regularly during Age of the Fall, but I know how amazing Jimmy Jacobs was. The problem is that ROH has done jack shit with Jacobs ever since they went to the Sinclair television spot. Even when he was one half of the tag team champions with Steve Corino, he couldn’t show his stuff and Corino slowed down every match. Finally, in this match, Jimmy Jacobs was great. I wish he could have won more cleanly, as they used Jay Lethal’s knee injury to allow Jacobs to get the win, but Jacobs hit the Sliced Bread for the win and I was very happy with the match. Good stuff.

Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe – You know, I’m not sure where they are taking Jay Briscoe’s character, but I liked how they set up the brother vs. brother match for Best in the World 2013. I like how Jay came out first and said he could whip anyone’s ass in Ring of Honor, including Michael Elgin, Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards. That brought out Mark, who actually cut a sane promo about how they were raised to be humble and he is tired of hearing Jay talk about whipping everyone’s asses while picking up chicken shit. It was a nice promo, a nice setup, and ROH actually made the match make sense.

  • PURGATORY:
SCUM vs. C&C Wrestling Factory – This match was decent and I stand behind the fact that Rhett Titus is much better as a villain than a face, but Cliff Compton has not sold me yet. C&C was great as usual, but my main problem with this match was the injury angle. The first match on the card featured Jay Lethal losing because of his knee injury, and not this one had C&C lose thanks to a shoulder injury. I like how they are showing that SCUM is winning by nefarious means, regardless of the good guy’s injuries, but doing it twice on one TV show is lazy booking.

  • THE WRONG:
Kevin Steen vs. Adam Cole – Kevin Steen is back in action, and that is nice to see. This match was a decent match as well, but Steen just ate his second pinfall loss in a row, which is not good for someone that ROH might be pinning their hopes on. The story that is building is that Steen has to beat all of SCUM before he gets his rematch, but he isn’t off to a good start. I also don’t really like ROH slamming the point home that no one can trust Steen. That should be a given for anyone following the promotion, but everyone from Jay Lethal to Steve Corino basically said that he wasn’t trustworthy and that comes across to me like booking for dummies. Also, I don’t like how they are building Adam Cole as a questionable SCUM member. He acted pretty cocky after winning after Jimmy Jacobs interfered, but he isn’t selling the angle well in my eyes.

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
    Nothing

    The 411

Decent show, with three decent matches, but lazy booking. I like how they are progressing the Jay Briscoe championship reign, but the Kevin Steen vs. SCUM angle is off to a poor start.

    Let’s rock…

    QUICK RESULTS

    – Sheamus Defeated Titus O’Neil [*1/2]
    – Big E. Langston Defeated Alberto Del Rio [**]
    – AJ Lee Defeated Layla [*****]
    – Cody Rhodes Defeated Zack Ryder [1/2*]
    – The Shield Defeated Team Hell No and Kofi Kingston [****1/2]
    – Randy Orton Defeated Jack Swagger [***1/2]
    – Triple H and Curt Axel Fought to a No Contest [*]

I was proposed a drinking game last week, in which fans were to drink per every mention of the WWE APP. Not literally every mention, as I counted three into one when they were referring to the same thing in succession, but just about every mention…leggo

  • THE RIGHT:
JERI-MIZ REUNITES!!: For what it’s worth, I found this match to be fun. The complete opposites that the Wade and Fandango team possessed created an atmosphere that was funny, as Wade continually attempted to get the attention of the asshole Fandango made me chuckle. Fandango is back on track with his character, as he danced on the side of the ring for no damned reason and was every bit a dick as he was when he was first debuting. I don’t know if they are continuing with The Miz as Barrett’s eventual IC opponent, but I can honestly say I’m not interested. Still, the match was good enough, and I chuckled. Jericho being the great troll that he is was also fun to see, although, I would have dropped Summer…

TITUS: Bring out the warsh-rag and wipe me down cuz I thought this match was fun. It took, literally, 7 seconds to explain why this match was happening, and automatically added credence and reason behind the match. That’s all it takes, folks. An aside comment and a reason for the match. Sheamus winning wasn’t in question, but in about six and a half minutes, there were some small moments of possibility. I’m not claiming Titus deserved the six minutes, or even that it will lead to something, but it’s a match like this that will help keep a mid-card (whether it be tag, singles, what have you) at a level that we can move them up or down when need be rather than a continual tail spin with only a few short hiccups…

BIG E: Not quite sure why the Number 1 Contender just lost, but I’m also not quite sure I care. Big E is young, fast, huge, agile, and yet still has room for improvement! The match was a bit too short, but we had some good wrestling on tonight’s show, and this match can be included in that. I loved the display of power, the strength, and – of course – AJ.

AJ: Speaking of which…The match was inconsequential, and I think Layla and AJ even messed up a bit there in the beginning. But they more than made up for it with the tap out and ass grab. AJ can kiss and kill me any day.

BELIEVE IN THE SHIELD: I’ll admit it, by the time this match came on, I was well into the drinking, and I was falling asleep. This match woke me the fuck up. Dudes were on fire! And I mean all six! Kane’s house of fire segment was the fastest I’ve seen him move, and it was all so…crisp! Yes, that’s the word! Crisp! Everything in this match just worked. They got over twenty minutes, there were times we didn’t know who would win, Kofi looked reinvigorated, Daniel had the crowd in the palm of his hands, and Kane was all kinds of Big Red (full of flavor and pop!) Ambrose was siiiick, Rollins showed a lot of intensity, and Reigns continues to be one of the quicker big guys in recent history. I can’t say enough good things about this match, and I’d take 10 more minutes if it was given to me!

  • PURGATORY:
RYBACK RULEZ!: Ok, so the show starting with an ambulance truck haulin ass into the arena was pretty cool. Ryback standing atop the truck saying he’s going to handle ol Cena was also pretty cool. What wasn’t cool? Ryback coming out of nowhere and saying that everyone was fat and stupid really caused this to take a turn. I’m all cool with insulting the crowd as a heel, but the thing is that a) it didn’t connect, even though he tried to make it so, and b) Ryback hasn’t done this…ever. It wasn’t a new fold in his character, it was a sad attempt at heel heat, and who likes that? Sure, Ryback has thrown the stupid part around, but calling the crowd obese and necessitating an ambulance to eventually demise is a bit…uncharacteristic yet cliché. Lost souls of society? Come on… I also have to mention his little Ryder segment. Was this because of Cena’s “friendship” with Ryder? It came out of nowhere and made Ryback look weak, as he chose – quite possibly – the least threatening dude outside of Hornswoggle to attack and send into the ambulance.

HEYMAN’S NEW CLIENT: Talk about under whelming. Now check it, I may go on a bit long here, but I’ll try to shorten it up. Triple H callin McG a kid, tellin him the adults are talking…meh. Triple H bitch slapping a heel to the ground. Ok…a little over the top, but still…meh. Triple H challenging him to a match then not giving the kid a real match….perhaps even a little more bothersome – and I’ll get to that – but still not the main problem.

I strongly considered this entire segment a missed opportunity for someone we hardly know – or have never seen – just like Brock, just like CM Punk (And yes, we can argue that we ALL knew who CM Punk was previously, but I’m referring to the WWE Audience), and instead, we go to someone that we have already seen…and simply were not impressed. This is not a knock on Curt’s abilities. I recapped NXT. I had to watch him on a weekly basis. He was off and on, hot and cold, intense and boring. He never found the medium, and although it was only a short time, I could see that he still hasn’t found it. So, in an effort to build a new superstar, a possible ground-breaking and top of the line man, a catapulted main eventer, a front-of-the-line – even if forced – dude that is larger than life both figuratively and perhaps literally and we get…

I know, it’s not fair to base his entire career and future on this one promo, but the thing is…there’s little to bite on here and both the crowd at home and the crowd in the arena seemed to give an exasperated sigh of “that’s it…?”

Then we get to the Triple H problem. As I said earlier, it’s not so much that he slapped the guy down. Whether we like it or not, Triple H is the face, Heyman is the heel, and Curt is the lackey. Faces get the upper hand from time to time, heels don’t. No, my issue comes with the match and WHO it was focused on, which you can read in the wRong.

ORTON V SWAGGER: This is in no way a diss on the match. I thought it was great, I thought that Orton and Swagger did more than what was asked from them, and I felt the 15 minutes plus of wrestling was just what I wanted from the two. Swagger is just solid. The end sequence was great, and I loved every second of it. I almost want to place the match in the Right and what I’m about to talk about in the wRong, but I’m lazy. We, the WWE Universe had the tough, tough decision to choose between Randy Orton…R-Truth…and The Great Khali…what did WWE truly expect to happen with those choices? I mean…really?! This app thing continues to be more of a bane and hindrance than an effective tool of entertainment. And yet…over 150,000 people voted. So who is wRong? Me? Us? Or all those kids with iPhones?!

  • THE WRONG:
TRIPLE H IS FEELIN WOOZY: So we got this main event in which, I truly didn’t see Axel going over at all. Like…not at all. But the last thing I thought I was going to see is the focus of the match move from the “new” debut and focus solely on Triple H. Let’s take the history of the WWE, align it with the rules, and tell me how often this particular situation happens. I’m not mad that Curt didn’t get the pin, it wasn’t expected. And I hardly EVER fantasy book, but a slight alteration of this match and guess what…we would have had a heel of a man in Axel. So Trips leaves the ring, the ref starts counting. Everything else can be the same, Triple H can fade away into Acting 101: How to Faint, as the ten count hits and the ref calls for the match. The bell rings, the camera pans to Curt Axel and Heyman looking HAPPY (not worried like Heyman did). They celebrate in their victory, however unworthy it was, and smile at the idiocy and incompetence of Triple H. We end with THAT, not the man that will be leaving soon. Not the man that will eventually be retiring after coming out of retirement for a match with retiring as a stipulation. Just…dumb.

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
    WWE APP:

    The 411

I can’t deny the fact that there was some solid in-ring action here, and if we take a step back and NOT be upset with the existence of Triple H, and the lack of anything NEW (because, a new name doesn’t make you a new man), then the show truly wasn’t all that bad. Still, The H-centric ending left a bad taste in my mouth, and the hamster-wheel momentum of some wrestlers needs to stop…
