Overview of this week’s rankings
Although last week’s leader (Roman Reigns) only dropped 0.7 points from last week, Curtis Axel jumped ahead of him to claim the top spot in this week’s RPI rankings. His matches against John Cena and Chris Jericho significantly improved his strength of schedule for the third straight week. One wonders whether this booking will continue. There are only so many upper echelon talents remaining (such as the Shield or those currently embroiled in a feud for the World Heavyweight Championship). Regardless, it is nice to see WWE put so much emphasis on this young talent. It isn’t like he doesn’t deserve this push what with training the Rock and Brock Lesnar for their high profile matches.
After a magnificent Monday night, Daniel Bryan rose to the 11th spot. In order for him to break through the ceiling (at least in regards to RPI rankings), he needs to start picking up wins against the Shield. Also, his rumored program with John Cena and the seemingly inevitable feud with Kane (who is currently at 5th) will push Daniel Bryan higher and higher in the rankings.
With his loss against Curtis Axel, John Cena has slid the most by losing nearly 2.4 RPI points on each of the last 4 weeks. Meanwhile, there are not that many big gainers or sliders (besides Axel and Cena). This could be a sign that those that are in feuds for the moment are going to be featured for the foreseeable future. But then again, this is the WWE…

RPI Explained
The ratings percentage index (RPI; out of 100) is a method which ranks teams or individuals based upon their wins, losses and strength of schedule. It is used by the NCAA to aid in the selecting and seeding of teams appearing in tournaments such as basketball’s March Madness.
Why are RPI rankings superior to simple win-loss records? Imagine a superstar that wins matches only against jobbers. Sure, their win/loss record will be stellar but by facing opponents who always lose, their RPI will not be as high as a superstar who wins half their matches but always faces opponents with stellar win/loss records. Using a statistically valid approach to examine WWE superstars will allow fans to determine if their favorite wrestler is being booked appropriately and whether their stock is rising or falling.
The factors involved are:
* 1) the superstar’s winning percentage (25%)
* 2) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents (50%)
* 3) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents’ opponents (25%)
Win-loss records are calculated for every WWE superstar over the past 2 months from Monday Night Raw, Smackdown, Superstars, Main Event, Saturday Morning Slam, and pay-per-views. Superstars must have competed in at least 3 matches over the past 2 months to be included in the overall RPI rankings.
