Overview of this week’s rankings
CM Punk remains atop this week’s RPI rankings for the third straight week slightly edging out Kane and Chris Jericho. Punk has been dominant from a win/loss perspective since his return at the Payback PPV with 5 wins, no losses and a single draw.

Kane again made gains this week increasing his RPI ranking by 2.5 points to secure the 2nd spot to leapfrog over Roman Reigns. In potentially being sidelined by the Wyatt Family on Raw, Kane’s RPI ranking may remain relatively stable if he stays off of TV for an extended amount of time.

My prediction last week of Team Hell No’s RPI rankings starting to diverge now that they are engaging in more singles action seems to be unfounded as Daniel Bryan was also dominant over the last week. With wins over Christian and Sheamus, the Dazzler increased his RPI ranking by 2.6 points and is now at the 4th spot, tied with John Cena. What Money in the Bank holds for Daniel Bryan is anybody’s guess. But it certainly appears as though he’s being set up for something big.

A look at the top ten movers and sliders over the last four weeks clearly shows who is currently in favor with the WWE creative team. Damien Sandow and Dolph Ziggler have slid the most while Ryback, Cena, and Kane has risen the most. The current storyline with Ryback is an interesting one to say the least. From a cognitive standpoint, I think Ryback is the most interesting he has ever been. We’ve seen the monster side of him what with the smorgasbord of handicap matches he was initially booked in. But to portray him as a coward type of character despite his incredible abilities leads to a conflict in the audiences mind. We know he should be dominating but he chooses heel tactics instead.

RPI Explained
The ratings percentage index (RPI; out of 100) is a method which ranks teams or individuals based upon their wins, losses and strength of schedule. It is used by the NCAA to aid in the selecting and seeding of teams appearing in tournaments such as basketball’s March Madness.

Why are RPI rankings superior to simple win-loss records? Imagine a superstar that wins matches only against jobbers. Sure, their win/loss record will be stellar but by facing opponents who always lose, their RPI will not be as high as a superstar who wins half their matches but always faces opponents with stellar win/loss records. Using a statistically valid approach to examine WWE superstars will allow fans to determine if their favorite wrestler is being booked appropriately and whether their stock is rising or falling.

The factors involved are:
* 1) the superstar’s winning percentage (25%)
* 2) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents (50%)
* 3) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents’ opponents (25%)

Win-loss records are calculated for every WWE superstar over the past 2 months from Monday Night Raw, Smackdown, Superstars, Main Event, Saturday Morning Slam, and pay-per-views. Superstars must have competed in at least 3 matches over the past 2 months to be included in the overall RPI rankings.
