411’s WWE RPI Rankings 07.27.13

Overview of this week’s rankings
Since the results from WWE Extreme Rules took place just over two months ago, they no longer factor into RPI rankings. As a result, John Cena shed his no contest draw against Ryback and made a massive gain in this week’s RPI rankings to nab the top spot from Kane.
Daniel Bryan’s performance on Monday was nothing short of spectacular. He rose a spot in the rankings just behind Cena, Roman Reigns, and Kane. While ‘smart’ fans have known for years that Bryan has top tier ability, it was really on display at Raw. Especially with the current push to match Bryan up with tough and successful opponents, his RPI will continue to increase win, lose, or draw (since opponent’s winning percentage makes up 50% of the RPI ranking).
Taking a look at the biggest sliders over the last 4 weeks is perhaps not all that surprising. Sin Cara has slid the most followed by Jack Swagger and Wade Barrett. As someone alluded to in last week’s comments, how sad is the current handling of Wade Barrett. To be given a reasonably interesting and heavy hitting gimmick but then to be relegated to PPV pre-show coverage must sting just a bit.
As far as big gainers, Triple H has risen the most (simply from shedding his loss to Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules and only having three matches total, all against Curtis Axel, in that horrible segment from Raw a few weeks back). But 3MB is starting to rise slightly along with Alberto Del Rio and Tons of Funk.

RPI Explained
The ratings percentage index (RPI; out of 100) is a method which ranks teams or individuals based upon their wins, losses and strength of schedule. It is used by the NCAA to aid in the selecting and seeding of teams appearing in tournaments such as basketball’s March Madness.
Why are RPI rankings superior to simple win-loss records? Imagine a superstar that wins matches only against jobbers. Sure, their win/loss record will be stellar but by facing opponents who always lose, their RPI will not be as high as a superstar who wins half their matches but always faces opponents with stellar win/loss records. Using a statistically valid approach to examine WWE superstars will allow fans to determine if their favorite wrestler is being booked appropriately and whether their stock is rising or falling.
The factors involved are:
* 1) the superstar’s winning percentage (25%)
* 2) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents (50%)
* 3) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents’ opponents (25%)
Win-loss records are calculated for every WWE superstar over the past 2 months from Monday Night Raw, Smackdown, Superstars, Main Event, Saturday Morning Slam, and pay-per-views. Superstars must have competed in at least 3 matches over the past 2 months to be included in the overall RPI rankings.
