411’s WWE RPI Rankings 09.15.13
Click here for the entire spreadsheet containing win/loss records and detailed calculations for the past two months.
Overview of this week’s rankings
John Cena remains at the top of the RPI rankings for the eight (and likely last) consecutive week. Daniel Bryan, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns round out the top five.
Damien Sandow made the biggest one week jump in RPI rankings by gaining over 5 points with his win over the Miz. On the other hand, Kane dropped the most. Another superstar who dropped a considerable amount was Dean Ambrose. With his losses to Daniel Bryan and Dolph Ziggler, Ambrose dropped from 6th to 11th in the rankings. Yet, his consistently strong performances and alignment with the Corporation could reverse his win-loss fortunes very quickly.
The Wyatt family has been booked incredibly strong since their debut. All three members remain undefeated but are not scheduled (as of yet) to participate in the upcoming PPV. Consistent winning aside, if a backstory isn’t generated for Luke Harper and Erick Rowan other than being lackeys for Bray Wyatt, will fans be invested in their matches?
Over the past two months, all three members of 3MB have lost each of their matches for a combined win-loss record of 0-33-1. Impressive, no? There will inevitably be some superstars who win more than others. However, it used to be the case that no-named jobbers would feel the brunt of the losses. But that is a bygone era and given the current nature of WWE programming, a new breed of jobbers has emerged with the likes of 3MB, Zack Ryder, Justin Gabriel and Jack Swagger. Good for business or inevitable?

RPI Explained
The ratings percentage index (RPI; out of 100) is a method which ranks teams or individuals based upon their wins, losses and strength of schedule. It is used by the NCAA to aid in the selecting and seeding of teams appearing in tournaments such as basketball’s March Madness.
Why are RPI rankings superior to simple win-loss records? Imagine a superstar that wins matches only against jobbers. Sure, their win/loss record will be stellar but by facing opponents who always lose, their RPI will not be as high as a superstar who wins half their matches but always faces opponents with stellar win/loss records. Using a statistically valid approach to examine WWE superstars will allow fans to determine if their favorite wrestler is being booked appropriately and whether their stock is rising or falling.
The factors involved are:
1) the superstar’s winning percentage (25%)
2) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents (50%)
3) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents’ opponents (25%)
Win-loss records are calculated for every WWE superstar over the past 2 months from Monday Night Raw, Smackdown, Superstars, Main Event, Saturday Morning Slam, and pay-per-views. Superstars must have competed in at least 3 matches over the past 2 months to be included in the overall RPI rankings.
