Overview of this week’s rankings
Daniel Bryan once again tops the RPI rankings by unseating Randy Orton who dropped to third overall. And what’s this? CM Punk back in the top five? You read that right. The Rhodes Brothers round out the top five to give a very nice illustration of who the WWE is high on at the moment heading into Hell in the Cell. CM Punk, Big E. Langston and Daniel Bryan all had dramatic one week increases to their RPI rankings (based on the opponents they faced and the exclusion of losses that occurred more than two months ago) whereas Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton, and the Miz had the biggest drops in their RPI.
Congratulations to Zack Ryder who regains the role of King of the Jobbers. In the last two months, he hasn’t won a single match out of the eight he’s had. Seeing as how the current storyline with Stephanie McMahon and Triple H is starting to involve more characters including the Big Show, it sure would be interesting to bring the Internet Champion into the fold. The storyline would write itself! How dare Zack Ryder strike out on his own in an attempt to get over. Don’t you know that the upper echelons of power get to dictate who is popular? The WWE never did capitalize on Z! True Long Island Story. Perhaps Dolph Ziggler could join in with that battle given his recent downscaling.
Hell in the Cell should provide some interesting moves going forward. Hopefully we can get a resolution to the CM Punk/Paul Heyman saga. As mentioned before, the Second City Saint has been making giant strides to return to the top of the RPI rankings. It’s almost been a year since he was in the hunt for the WWE title (or any title for that matter). The return of John Cena will also lead to interesting developments. Does Cena just remain perched on top now that he’s back or can he engage some midcard talent in an infinitely more provocative way? But more importantly, there are only six matches (including the preshow kickoff) scheduled for Hell in the Cell. Unless we’re going to see an Iron Man style match from one of these, what new rivalries could be initiated at the upcoming PPV? I, for one, am excited…

RPI Explained
The ratings percentage index (RPI; out of 100) is a method which ranks teams or individuals based upon their wins, losses and strength of schedule. It is used by the NCAA to aid in the selecting and seeding of teams appearing in tournaments such as basketball’s March Madness.
Why are RPI rankings superior to simple win-loss records? Imagine a superstar that wins matches only against jobbers. Sure, their win/loss record will be stellar but by facing opponents who always lose, their RPI will not be as high as a superstar who wins half their matches but always faces opponents with stellar win/loss records. Using a statistically valid approach to examine WWE superstars will allow fans to determine if their favorite wrestler is being booked appropriately and whether their stock is rising or falling.
The factors involved are:
* 1) the superstar’s winning percentage (25%)
* 2) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents (50%)
* 3) the average winning percentage of the superstar’s opponents’ opponents (25%)
Win-loss records are calculated for every WWE superstar over the past 2 months from Monday Night Raw, Smackdown, Superstars, Main Event, Saturday Morning Slam, and pay-per-views. Superstars must have competed in at least 3 matches over the past 2 months to be included in the overall RPI rankings.
