Double M’s Rasslin’ Report 10.28.06

October 28, 2006 | Posted by Michael Melchor

I’m Eazy-E loc’ed up; I’m Bobby Brown coked-up. (If you’re really astute, you may realize that line is a preview of things to come.) Hey there and welcome back to the weekend. Don’t know about you, but it’s been a long week here. Kinda glad to see the weekend arrive.

This is the part where I promised, per last week, that I’d talk up a couple of the shows. SmackDown I don’t watch and Raw was damn near the same show. Wonder how miffed McMahon is that the mainstream media ignored K-Fed’s second appearance on Raw.

But, really, he should have expected this. If the man had any clue about the way our culture and its relationship with modern celebrity “news” works, he’d realize that. You see, most gossip and “news” is put out there to arise a chuckle out of its audience. “Oh, look, Britney walked out of a bathroom with no shoes” could easily translate into “Oh, look, K-Fed got his ass slammed on ‘Raw”.” The end result is the same – it’s announced by some smart-ass announcer-type, a few C-D-list celebrities (at best) crack on it, and then they move on and forget about it…

…which is exactly what happened here. Hell, the clips from VH1’s “Best Week Ever” – that WWE even showed themselves – could prove that. Raw and K-Fed are old news; hell, they became old news 2 days after he was first on the show.

As for Impact, I didn’t get to see it as I was working. Based on the recaps I read, though, I may skip it. That damned “Fight For Your Right Invitational All-Or-Nothing Triple-Cherry Dogpile” battle royal thing they did sounds way too confusing to want to keep up with. Why didn’t they just do a “Gauntlet For The Gold” match for all that? Stick with the signatures you already have, I say (but then I’ve been saying that for weeks now). I can’t say if the show was as bad as Byers made it out to be, but I can see where he’s coming from. I would probably enjoy most of it, but then that’s why we have the magic of YouTube in case there’s anything I really wanna see.

Mail Call

Nothing to see here, move along people. Hell, I got more mail for the Hip-Hop column I did. Which is just as well, because my focus may REALLY be back in the Music Zone soon. In more ways than one. Confused? Yeah, I am, too.

Okay, This Is Boring – What Else Is There To Read?

I’d take The Randy Orton to my Edge (simply because I know I’m older than he is) up on his best about Samoa Joe becoming #1 contender to the NWA Title, but the exchange rate between here and Canada wouldn’t be worth it. I have a feeling I’m gonna pay for that jab.

I’d also take My Favorite Writer™ up on his trade offer, but I don’t think I have anything I want to give up. Kinda makes that difficult.

Matthew Sforcina makes the Forumers happy and does up an Evolution Schematic on The Big Wiggle Norman Smiley.

I’m personally dying to see Death Of A President.

I’m debating on getting in on The Heineken Dialogues, but time is definitely working against me. No “old man” jokes, please; that ain’t what I mean.

It Ain’t 1998, But It’s All We Got

Just in time for the biggest event of the company’s calendar year, Bound For Glory was without one of TNA’s most associated stars, Monty Brown. See, Brown’s contract is expired and he hasn’t reached a new deal. Instead of being in Detroit on Sunday, Brown was at Raw on Monday possibly negotiating a WWE contract.

This has been rumored before, but I think we’re about to see it. WWE just lost one of its biggest stars to TNA, so it’s time for Vince to return the favor. How they use him – whether as a serious star or a whipping boy just to rib TNA – is another story. At any rate, though, I’ll go on record now and say that it’s about to happen.

Is Monty Brown on the same level as Angle in terms of ability or name recognition? Probably not. Is he enough of a name for WWE to scoop him up just to spite TNA? Sure he is.

And people say Vince doesn’t consider TNA competition.

The Rest Of The News That’s Fit To Post

  • Rumors of Corporal Kirchner’s death are greatly exaggerated. In fact, they’re outright false.

Kircher – real name Mike Kirchner (makes sense) – set the record straight with Slam! Wrestling. He drives a truck now and is rather happy with life on the road – albeit in a different capacity.

What cracks me up is that this wasn’t some IWC site error. 1Wrestling or PWInsider didn’t report this – WWE.com did. (Interestingly enough, there’s no sign of the link to the story now.) That cracks me up that the self-appointed Leader of All Things Related To WWE News screwed up like this. Makes me want to get started on that Double Impact I’ve been thinking about in relation to things like this…

  • No sooner than the Blue Bloods reunite than “Squire” David Taylor injures his knee and is headed off to surgery. Kinda sucks for a team that just got off the ground and could have been a boost to the tag division on Friday nights. More proof that God hates SmackDown and wants the brand extension to end.

  • Psicosis has been released due to his recent legal troubles in Mexico. Well, duh. I called that one two weeks ago.

  • In more comings and goings news, Road Agents Producers Tim Horner and Ted DiBiase (?!) are out, and Tully Blanchard is in.

Okay, bringing in Blanchard is a good move. Horner…he was okay, but no big loss. But DiBiase? What crackhead made THAT decision? Why let go of a guy that can teach most of the kids on your roster how to work a decent match rather than continue the bland, in-and-out TV style that has the company running a treadmill in terms of match quality?

Oh, right. Because it’s all about the “entertainment”. Never mind.

  • In even more comings-and-goings, Eddie Colon – son of Carlos and brother of Carlito – has been signed by WWE. In a shoot interview I saw with her (where she doesn’t look as bad as she used to), Tammy Sytch thought it was funny that Carlito was signed first because, in her words, Eddie is the one that wants to be in the business, whereas Carlito is there to more-or-less please his dad. We’ll see if that holds any water – and if Eddie is cooler than Carlito.

  • Sources say that Brooke Hogan’s CD is expected to sell 30-40k in its first week – a decent but vastly underwhelming number given the promotion that went into it.

While this is way early to tell any sort of sales numbers, would this really surprise anyone? I mean, the one single that’s out now has a decent pop hook, but this goes back to the culture of celebrity ridiculousness I mentioned at the beginning. Brooke Hogan is seen as a novelty, and her papa is to blame for that by putting her and the rest of the family all over VH1 – one of the networks that loves to make spectacles out of celebrity lives. You think anyone’s listening to her music? Please; you must be dumber than I look.

  • And finally, Daniel Puder had some disparaging words about Kurt Angle. After getting in a lucky round on a guy that underestimated him a few years ago during the (hopefully) last Tough Enough, Puder now claims that Angle is, indeed, a druggie and that he could tie Angle in a knot any time he wants.

I’m not getting into all of his comments, but many, I think, were kinda uncalled for. Regardless of that, I’m not here to defend Angle; the man’s more than capable of that, if he chooses to. You see, Angfle may think the same way I do in that either Puder is glomming off of Angle’s recent publicity from jumping to TNA, or that Puder is already building up a MMA match between the two. If it’s the former, then somebody please tell the TE reject to get a life and some friends. If it’s the latter, then this’ll look more interesting in hindsight if the two ever sign on to fight. We’ll see either way, I guess. The ball is in Angle’s court.

    Happy Trails

Wow, I actually had some stuff to talk about this week. I’m impressed. Think the wrestling world can keep it up for another week? Keep it here to find out the answer and to keep up on all the pop culture goings-on. I’ll be right back here, like it or not, in 7 days.

    L8. Thanks again for reading.
