Ask 411 Wrestling 08.08.07: Sting’s forgotten TNA stint, Spanky singing, Jokes about Bossman’s Mother and more!

August 8, 2007 | Posted by Steve Cook

It’s time to Ask 411 Wrestling! I’m Steve Cook, and we have officially entered the dog days of summer. 100 degrees today? Good God Almighty! What really sucks about it is that I have one of the shittiest jobs to possibly have in this kind of weather…driving around all day in a crappy truck with no A/C. On the bright side, I can probably lose more water weight.

With what happened last week (my computer eating an almost-finished column), there’s a chance that if you sent a question between July 10-20 that I won’t get around to answering it. If you don’t see a question appear in the column within…3 weeks or so, feel free to re-send it. Now, I’m not saying that I’ll answer every question that ever gets sent to [email protected]…but hopefully I’ll come pretty damn close.

At least until I hit it big and leave this taco stand.

Last friendly reminder before we start….please make sure to check the archives before asking a question. Sometimes people ask the same questions that I’ve answered before and it gets pretty boring. I like excitement…which makes me wonder what the hell I’m doing in Northern Kentucky.

Comments, Corrections & other “C” Words

To clear up some previous business…

In reference to the question about Dusty munching on some toilet snacks, it was actually T.L. Hopper who did the offending deed. Dusty did have the oft-remembered vinette as a plumber, but during the horrid early 90’s era WWF they kept introducing new evil *insert random job title* characters such as clowns, hockey players, baseball players, and dentists. T.L. Hopper was the evil plumber who was introduced with that vinette (though he was kind of portly, so I can understand the confusion with Dusty). Also, Hopper would end his matches by shoving a dirty plunger over the mouth of his defeated foe.Curtis Soileau, Jr.

Several people e-mailed about an incident where Hopper ate a “piece of poo” during a Summerslam pre-show. Good times?

I distinctly recall Val Venis first being named Vick. What I remember in particular was how Sean Morley would annunciate the ‘K’ sound. It only lasted for maybe two vignettes so I’d be easy to miss or forget.RM

I THINK THAT Flair beat Savage on free TV for the WWF belt just after Savages’ SS match with Warrior. If I recall, Elizabeth and Savage had just broken up in real life and Savage was so down Vince had him pass out from the figure four. The ref then counted the pin.Jay

I don’t think that Savage’s divorce had anything to do with how the title change went down…Savage had injured his knee in the match with Warrior, and they were using that to explain Savage passing out from the pain. I never understood how the figure four could lead to a pinfall…the wrestler applying the hold doesn’t touch the upper body of his opponent.

I’ve done some research and have solved the mystery of
Austin Idol appearing in the WWF. Apparently he was in
the WWWF in the early 70’s as an undercard strongman
by the name of Dennis McCord.

The Briscoes are not likely to get a WWE offer, because they are still seen in big circles as spot monkeys. This stems from their 02-04 run. Since coming back they’ve added some bulk and aren’t flipping around everywhere, so they would actually be a nice foil for London and Kendrick, but they just don’t look like WWE performers, either. Maybe the dental work Mark had done will fix some of that, but the tattoos don’t fit.

Anyone who is looking for some good Briscoes matches from this year should check:

Jay vs Mark, 5th Year Festival, Finale
Briscoes – Kings of Wrestling, any of them
Briscoes – MCMG
CL Smooth

Just read your latest 411 column and thought I’d recommend The Briscoes vs Kotoru Suzuki/Ricky Marvin from NOAH 01/21/2007 Budokan Hall show. It’s most definitely a MOTYC and is easily accessable on Youtube.Justin Baisden

It’s good to hear from Justin, a former writer for 411 and other wrestling websites. He was one of the top online puro experts back in the day, and still follows the product. And unlike a lot of ex-IWC guys, he seems to have survived the experience without going insane. That makes me feel better about my future.

I believe Johnny Ace was the Flagbearer bearer for the Sheephearders before either Jacko Victory or Rip MorganButchie O’Dwyer

Yeah, how could I forget about Johnny’s stint? Especially since it’s so much fun to rag on him for it.

HitC being bigger, I like the ego part, I do, but HBK and Shane like to get air time, and if you watch most HitC matches, at the top rope you are basically banging your head if standing, let alone jumping off. So my idea would be that Shane and HBK like to take to the air, so let’s not knock out our people. The first one had HBK in it, and maybe they didn’t think about that, but every HitC afterwards really did not have any guys that would take to the top rope. The one I remember was Taker and Brock, Taker did his old school-like walk, he held a support bean the whole way, and instead of jumping, he just kinda leaned forward and fell off into a elbow drop on the fallen Brock. Just my speculation.

I think Punk’s anaconda vice is way better than the GTS. Slamming someone down, bending there arm up behind there head, and choking them out is WAY better than a elevated knee to the head. Besides like I had said before, wouldn’t the choke hold be a way better move to name Go To Sleep than a knee to the damn face, that should be called GTA, not grand theft auto, but Go Take Advil.Chris Jacobs

Thought that you might want to take a look at the most tattooed wrestler I’ve ever seen – obviously, he’s never worked in the US, and I’ve only seen him work once, so he’s very obscure.

Hey man, it’s your favorite tattoo artist/411 reader even though you don’t like
tattoos. That’s ok, they’re not for everyone. Just commenting on the favorite
tattoos question from this week:

“Semi-regular questioner, avid reader, have a quick question that just occurred
to me after seeing the “debut” of Big Daddy V. I had no idea Viscera was
tattooed, and definitely not to the extent that he is.

My question is, who is the most heavily tattooed wrestler, either today or ever?
And, as a matter purely of personal opinion, who do you think has the best
tattoos?

My favourite right now is Santino Marella’s huge, back-covering lion. There must
be a character which can be made for him based on that tattoo, or at least a
damned good promo. Remember those C M Punk vignettes, where he talked about his
tattoos and what they meant to him? That kind of thing. – Iain

I think candidates for the title of “Most Tattooed Wrestler” have to include The
Godfather, Mideon, and Undertaker. All three have a ridiculous amount of tattoos
covering most of their body.

I’m not a big tattoo guy, so I think the best tattoo would be the one that makes
the most money. Goldberg’s bicep tatoo isn’t anything spectacular, but it
appeared on lots of t-shirts that made lots of money. So I’d consider that one
to be the best.”

I’d have to say that Mideon had some great tattoos, Takers I’ve seen in
magazines and alot of them are pretty old-school, the Godfather from what I’ve
seen on TV look decent. Viscera has been getting tattooed for years, I met him
in a Nudie bar over a decade ago when he was in Men on a Mission (He’s HUGE) and
he had those skulls on his arm then. Very nice guy though. I must say, it’s
hilarious watching a man of that size stir his mixed drink in a pint glass.
Imagine yourself holding a tiny straw and stiring in a radius of about a half of
an inch in a shot glass. Thats like Viscera stirring a regular drink. The
broads still loved him then. too.
Other notes of interest would be the Jeff Hardy Organic Branch like sleeve thing
he’s got going on (not sure if it’s done or not), Shannon Moore has some
fantastic work as well. Also, the Rock has some very detailed traditional Samoan
work on him which took alot of time and patience for the details, I’m sure.
Same goes with Umaga’s growing collection which I’m a big fan of the newer
stuff. Let’s not count out Brock Lesnar’s piece as well. I’m confused as to
why CM Punk has a Pepsi logo on him if he’s straight-edge and Pepsi has caffeine
in it, but I’m sure there is a reason behind it.
It also looks like Edge is adding to his collection with the Stars and Skulls
(not sure how much further he’s going to go), and Randy Orton is covering
himself in tribal as we speak it seems.

I notice when Wrestlers get injured, they come back with tattoos as their injury
gives them the proper time to heal a tattoo, so we’ll see if Edge comes back
with anything new.

Some of the old schoolers with tattoos of interest would be: Harley Race (quite
a few on the arms for back then’s standards) and the bad-ass one would have to
go to the Rocks Granddaddy, High Chief Peter Maivia with his traditional Samoan
Pe’a.

Keep up the good work man, even if you don’t like tattoos, hahahaKRYSTOF

I think I’ll have him answer all future tattoo questions. Of course, that could result in me losing my gig, so maybe that isn’t such a great idea. Hmmm.

Questions!

I’ve been looking through quite a few columns that speak of TNA, and Sting’s involvement. Well I have been watching TNA since around the beginning (Thanks to ESPN Classic Canada, they show the old shows so I catch what ever I missed eventually) and well Sting has bounced in and out of TNA on many of occasions always to the same tune usually. That tune would be; Enter, Feud with Jarret, Feud with Jarret some more, Exit for a while. I have always wondered why it is hardly ever mentioned his previous runs with the company? It’s not like it didn’t happen, but TNA, alot of the 411 Wrestling writers, and generally anyone who watches TNA seems to disregard that piece of TNA’s history. – Travis Bucklaschuk

This sort of thing seems to happen a lot in pro wrestling. Anything that didn’t happen 5 minutes ago is completely forgotten about. I can talk about how other promotions specialize in this, but TNA does have a nasty habit of not mentioning things that happened in the past. How many casual TNA viewers that started watching the show a couple of months ago know that AJ Styles has held every belt in TNA? They just know that he’s Christian Cage’s lapdog. That’s pretty sad, but it’s par for the course these days. I remember when Sting came back to TNA, in the first interview he did I’m pretty sure they talked about his past appearances there, but they didn’t go into detail. In general, people that book wrestling don’t want to bring up anything from the past that might work against what they’re building. TNA probably figured that a lot of people didn’t see Sting when he previously appeared with them, so maybe it would be a bigger deal if they promoted his most recent run as his “comeback”. As for the other writers, I can’t really speak for them.

I will say one thing…I wish I got ESPN Classic Canada.

I am a long time wrestling fan trying to break into the radio industry. I
believe my production skills and knowledge of the business would make me a
valuable asset to a “wrestling-radio format.”
My question to you is, do you know any radio stations that broadcast a
wrestling show? I would prefer to stay off of an Internet radio show and would
prefer an actually FM/AM radio station.
Any information you can send would be appreciated. – Michael Gomez

There aren’t as many as there used to be, but there are still some wrestling radio shows that are actually on the radio. The most well-known is probably Between The Ropes, which airs on 740 AM in Orlando on Wednesday nights from 10-12.

Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Live airs on the Sports Byline Network on Sunday nights from 8-10.

Indy wrestling announcer Eric Gargiulo hosts a show on 1490 AM in Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoons from 12-1.

King Booker had a radio show called “Tea Time with King Booker” on Saturdays on Houston’s 790 AM, but I don’t see it on their schedule. JBL has a weekend radio show that airs at various times throughout the country, but it’s a political show.

Any other information about wrestling radio shows not on the Internet would be appreciated. The last time I heard a wrestling show on the radio was back when Les Thatcher was hosting a show on 1360 AM in Cincinnati during the wrestling boom of the late 90s.

I don’t know if this has been asked before. But I just saw a footage from 2003, during the Big Shows and Undertakers feud from No Way Out in Montreal. The footage is the build up of the feud showing all the mind games Big Show and Paul Heyman did on the Undertaker, and at one point, you see Taker in the ring and Heyman on the ramp. Heyman says Big Show has a message for him, sending a small guy dressed in a red suit in the ring singing to the Undertaker “He’s very very sorry! He’s very very sorry!”. My question is, was that Brian Kendrick? Beacause he looked alot like him. – Jeff

Indeed, the singing telegram man was the man also known as Spanky, Brian Kendrick. Luckily he hasn’t had many more altercations with Undertaker.

I heard a rumor at the 2006 ECW One Night Stand, Cena was initially booked to keep the title in his match with RVD, but that once the WWE people got a sense for the Philly crowd (eg. the “If Cena Wins We Riot” sign), they changed the ending while the match was going on. Is this true? Are you aware of any other instances where something like this happened – I mean an adaptation, not something like the Montreal Screwjob. – Tommy G.

RVD winning the title was always in the plans for that show. There has been speculation that the finish of the Final Four match in 1997 was changed after Steve Austin injured his knee during the match, but nothing has come out one way or the other to convince me that the winner was changed during the match. Most promoters tend not to fuck with their title changes in the middle of a match…it’s tough to plan future cards if you’re changing shit in the middle of main events.

When Chris Benoit died, Steve Austin was back stage to do an interview that night. Then this past week, he was on Raw talking about who he thought would win between Lashley and Cena. Why is Austin backstage and why is he not on TV? – MB

They don’t have anything for him to do right now, and he doesn’t come to the shows every week. While Austin’s movie career might be on a bit of a hold due to the miserable performance of The Condemned, he’s still a guy that doesn’t need to show up on a wrestling show every week. I’m not sure what you would have him do since he can’t really take bumps or wrestle or anything like that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a pretty big Austin fan…but I don’t see the point of him appearing on TV for something that’s not very important.

I’ve been trying really hard to find this, but I can not seem to surf the interweb very well. Where can I find a video of the Dusty Rhodes Hard Times promo? – Joshua Claytor

I can’t surf it very well either, as I haven’t seen it online either. Readers?

why is cody rhodes from charlotte? does dusty live there now? ive heard a bunch of the old NWA guys do – flair, steamboat, nikita – but i never heard about dusty living there. – Manu Bumb

Dusty currently resides in Brooksville, Florida…I’d imagine that when he was booking Jim Crockett Promotions that he maintained a home in the Charlotte area because that’s where JCP headquarters were. Cody’s billed hometown is pretty funny though, because he was born in Marietta, Georgia and currently lives in Louisville, Kentucky. He won a high school tournament in Georgia. His Charlotte ties combined with his current ring attire make me wonder if Dusty was the wrestler that fathered Cody.

Eddie Boyd has a few questions and observations…

Why is the WWE so adamant about making Randy Orton a number one contender? I understand that with Edge out that they need a top heel in the company, but he has failed so many times to win over the crowd. The Legend Killer gimmick was stale three months ago, and he isn’t versatile enough to change his image. I ask again, WHY?!

You know, there are a lot of people that agree with you. Then there are people like 411’s Daniel Wilcox who tells me that Orton was still over during his month long title reign and thinks that WWE dropped the ball there. But he also wants to do Hannah Montana, so I’m not sure what to think. Other than I hope he’s under 18.

Anyway, Orton’s still young and WWE still sees a lot of potential in him. Why do you think they’ve given him so many second chances? He has shown some flashes of brilliance, so maybe he’ll be able to pull it all together someday. He’s got plenty of time to do so, and outside of Booker & Kennedy they don’t really have that many other choices for top heel at this point.

Carlito? Surely you jest.

In my opinion, the WWE messed up with not letting Ted DiBiase get a championship run during the 1988-1989 years. He was the chickenshit heel that everyone hated. Ken Kennedy reminds me of him because he has that arrogance and the chickenshit heel appeal about him. When will the WWe give him a chance and do you think he will ever get a run with the WWE Championship?

To be fair, DiBase did get to hold the Million Dollar Title, which looked a lot cooler than the WWF title belt and cost a lot more money. Unless Kennedy screws up or keeps getting injured to the point where he has to retire early, I think you can definitely pencil him in for a world title run. Creative seems pretty high on him even if he does lose a bit more often than some of us would like to see. I wouldn’t be too worried about that though. If Kennedy doesn’t get a title run in a couple years, something’s gone wrong in his career.

I didn’t see the GAB match Sunday. Was the match between Cena and LAshley that bad that they had to demote Lashley to bitchin’ Carlito?

I haven’t seen the match either. I think it was more that they were pushing Carlito than they were punishing Lashley, but since Lashley’s going to be out for awhile due to injury it doesn’t really matter.

Last question, who do you believe in the OVW-FCW farm system will be the NEXT BIG THING?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. There really aren’t a lot of guys standing out down there right now. As a ROH fan I’m obligated to put over Colt Cabana because he’s a good character guy and a competent worker, which should give him a pretty good role in WWE. I’m not sure why they’re calling him “Boom Boom” though. Harry Smith has shown some promise in matches I’ve seen of his in the independents.

Dan L. has three questions…

1.) Do you know of any place online that gives you results of all WWE/ECW House Shows and tapings and PPVs for this year? I used to go to a site called Obsessed with Wrestling for this but it seems like they have not updated their results since earlier this year and I definitely can not find this information on the main WWE site. Thanks!

I can not recommend the History of WWE website enough. This site contains arena reports from the entire history of WWE, all the way back to 1963. It’s updated up until August 1 of this year the last time I checked.

2.) Where in the world is Mike Knox? He is still listed on the ECW Superstars page but I have not seen him wrestle recently. Has WWE sent him down to OVW? I think now would be a good time for him to come in and fued with someone like The Miz.

Knox was sent back down to Deep South Wrestling, and since has moved to Florida Championship Wrestling. Rumor has it he’ll be back in ECW in the near future, but he’s been sent down to iron out some of the kinks in his game.

3.) This is going to seem like an odd question. I have heard of wrestlers who have soiled their trunks before the matches in the past as sort of a joke to their opponent (sick I know!) I used to wrestle with my buddies and one thing we discovered is sometimes with the wrong movement, one of us would accidentally pass gas while issuing a hold. Has there been any stories of wrestlers who have accidentally or even jokingly passed gas in another wrestler’s face during a match? I would imagine it has happened and if so, with whom?

I have heard one story recently about something like this happening…it involved Haystacks Calhoun & Killer Kowalski. You can imagine how happy Killer was with the 600+ pound man after that. I’m sure it has happened in other instances before, but oddly enough I haven’t gone out of my way to find out.

Paul Webb brings us two questions from the United Kingdom…

When was the last time the WWE and World title each changed hands on Smackdown or Raw rather than at a PPV ??

It’s been pretty recent for both title belts…the World title was won by Great Khali on the July 17 edition of Smackdown in a battle royal. The previous title change was also on Smackdown, as Edge defeated Undertaker for the title on the May 8 edition of Smackdown.

As for the WWE title, Edge won it in a triple threat match against Rob Van Dam & John Cena on the July 3, 2006 edition of Raw. He lost it to John Cena a couple of months later at Unforgiven, and Cena has held on to the strap since then.

In each instance, changing the strap on television wasn’t originally in WWE’s plans. Edge & Undertaker both got injured while champion, leading to title changes on Smackdown shortly after their injury. RVD’s reign was supposed to be longer as well, but legal problems led to the end of that.

Do you think ECW should bring in a secondary title (TV title?) for the likes of Kevin Thorn, Stevie Richards, Matt Striker, Tommy Dreamer etc. to fued over – Thought they could have alternate weeks matches focusing on each belt rather than trying to cram it all in 1 hour everyweek and have the other belt just featured in promos on their ‘off’ weeks.

ECW doesn’t have the time for more titles. More titles makes the existing titles mean less. They could do a better job with having people actually go after the one title that ECW has right now, rather than just admitting that half of their roster sucks and giving them a lesser title to shoot for. I am generally against establishing new title belts unless there’s a really good reason to do so. ECW has no tag teams, so I see no purpose of a tag team title. ECW doesn’t have enough people to justify a second singles title, so I see no reason to make one.

Last night I was watching the 1990 Great American Bash on WWE 24/7 (which featured Big Van Vader’s debut and Sting vs. Flair for the title) and saw a match between Dutch Mantell and Doug Furnas. Now, my exposure to Furnas is rather limited, mostly just his stint in WWE with Phil LaFon. But holy sh-t. Not only was he absolutely ripped, but he was billed as the World’s Strongest Man – and according to Wikipedia he’s also still the record holder for a lot of collegiate weight lifting titles. The dude, for his size (mid 200’s) lifted Mantell (a good 300+ lbs) over his head, then military pressed him and the crowd went crazy. Mix that with some serious agility that reminded me of a young Rob Van Dam (not quite that good, but still) and he blew me away for a rookie.

So what the hell happened? The guy could have been a legit bad ass in America, but he ended up going to the Indy circuit and making major waves in Japan. Why did he never rise to stardom in the US? Did he suck on the mic or what? Like I say, my exposure to his work is pretty limited. – Ty Huston

Doug Furnas was a hell of an athlete…along with his weight-lifting records he played football at the University of Tennessee, and as a result of that he was always popular when he wrestled in the Knoxville area. Unfortunately that was the only place in America where he ever got over to a major degree. Furnas’s mike skills were pretty much non-existant, and while his in-ring work was really solid, he couldn’t express any charisma while wrestling either. He just couldn’t make that connection to the fans that he needed to be a major success in America. Furnas & LaFon both had that problem while in WWE…they had some great matches with the team of Owen Hart & Davey Boy Smith, but they couldn’t get themselves over with the fans as anything other as “those guys that wrestle”. Japanese wrestling focuses more on the in-ring work than charisma, so he was able to achieve a good amount of success there.

I have a question this time too. I was watching an OLD Ring of Honor DVD,
actually the first one. Besides an unbelievable match between Danielson,
Low-Ki, and the Fallen Angel, Rob Feinstein is on there and so is a team called
Da Hit Squad. I researched some of the guys on the DVD that I hadn’t heard of
before and found some mysterious, rumor filled questions. Number 1, what was
Rob Feinstein accused of(something to do with child pornography or something)?
Does RF video stand for “Rob Feinstein” video, and if so, why wouldn’t they
change it? Finally, Dan Maff from Da Hit Squad apparently did something to
Homicide that got him black-balled from wrestling, what was it? – Charlie

We discussed the Feinstein Incident in the 02.21.07 edition of Ask 411 Wrestling…I’ll refer you to that.

RF Video is Feinstein’s company, so he can call it whatever he wants.

As for Maff, Homicide claimed in an internet interview that Maff was a pedophile and did something that messed with his family and his personal life. I don’t have specifics, but you can probably draw your own conclusions.

Back in the old days of Memphis wrestling (and this would have been when Nick Gulas was involved) there was a stable called Fire, Flame and Torch. I’ve checked OWW for info on these guys but none of them is listed. They were all masked, had red outfits with yellow flames and of course there gimmick was throwing fire on people. I remember them doing it to Lawler, Fabulous Ones and a bunch of the other wrestlers that were in the promotion at that time. I think I even remember them eventually getting unmasked and one of them was Don Bass (sure enough, I checked OWW under his name and there it was along with Roger Smith as “Flame”), but does anyone remember who played Torch? No mention of him in the profile and I do remember he was added later on to help them regain being on top of things. – Marty Barrows

Torch was played by Larry Wright, who didn’t seem to do much else of significance in his career other than job to guys like Gene Kiniski. And looking at him, one can see why he wouldn’t have exactly been a huge star in wrestling. Well, he was huge.

JB (not Borash) has some questions…

1. What was behind the storyline for when Ric Rude first left the WWF? I remember that he was suspended indefinitely by President Jack Tunney for making fun of the Big Bossman’s mother, which has to be the dumbest suspension reason in wrestling history. Why not the traditional jobbing in a match, off TV for a couple months and the fans forgetting about you?

Rude was originally scheduled to feud with Bossman, hence the comments about Bossman’s momma. Rude left the company before anything developed there…I haven’t seen the reasoning behind Rude’s leaving, but my guess is that it happened before the WWF could figure out a way to have him do the usual exit from the company. So they made up the whole suspension thing, which was original if nothing else. Besides, “your momma” jokes are soooooooooooooo middle school, man. Tunney should have suspended Rude just because of that.

2. What was behind Razor Ramon randomly jobbing to Vader at the end of his first WWF run? I remember he already had been off TV for months and then he got thrown into a random PPV filler match against Vader. Was it meant to be an extra slap in the face for going to WCW?

Probably. But it’s the wrestling custom to have a departing wrestler put somebody over on the way out. Vader was going to be the top contender for Shawn Michaels’ WWF title in the summer of 1996, so it was a good idea to have Ramon put him over on the way out. He had been suspended prior to his match with Vader due to drug usage…if not for that they probably would have had him put over Goldust (who he was scheduled to wrestle at WM 12 until the suspension) and some other people.

3. Why is it with any ‘good’ tag team you always seem to have one guy go on to stardom and the other goes nowhere. Check it out:

Harlem Heat: Booker T has hall of fame career Stevie Ray never does anything else
Rockers: HBK has fall of fame career, and other that a brief mid-card run Jannetty never did anything
Smoking Gunns: Billy has gone to have a decent mid-card career in singles and tag teams, Bart disappeared (although the Brawl for All probably played a big part)
MNM: Nitro looks to be having a sold singles career, Mercury is already gone
Steiners: Scott went on to be a world champion, Rick never did anything
Hart Foundation: Bret had a hall of fame career, Anvil only had brief sucsess in other tag teams

I’m probably missing a few. Am I just over analyzing things?

I wouldn’t say that always happens. Exhibit A would be the multi-time tag team championship winning team of Edge & Christian. Edge has gone on to hold both the Raw & Smackdown world titles, while Christian has held TNA’s world title on two occasions. Both of the Hardy Boys have had a good amount of success in the singles ranks, and some would argue that the best is yet to come for both of them. Granted, those are two recent examples, but still relevant.

I have been a wasslin fan since late 97. I remember the creation of the WWF Light heavyweight division and some of the wrestlers. Taka, Pantera, Suicide Kid, Aguila…etc. I know who at what happened to Taka and Aguila, however I cant find info on the others. Can you help with these two and any others you can remember. Cheers. – Mike Winterburn

I decided to take a look back at the WWF Light Heavyweight Title Tournament in 1997…here’s a list of the competitors in the tournament and what happened to them:

Agulia – Later became Essa Rios, currently competes as Mr. Aguila in CMLL.

Super Loco – I AM SUPER~! I AM CRAZY~! I AM SUPER CRAZY~!

TAKA – You know this one.

Devon Storm – Later became Crowbar in WCW, currently competes in the indies.

Eric Shelley – No idea on this one.

Scott Taylor – Somehow remained employed until just recently.

Brian Christopher – Competes in the indies, including Memphis Wrestling. It’s been rumored that he may come back to TNA to team with Rikishi, but that’s just rumor.

I don’t remember El Pantera appearing in WWE, but he’s still active, recently competing in CHIKARA. Suicide Kid doesn’t ring a bell. It could have been Eric Shelley for all I know.

Jaime has two questions…

1) Does Cena have any back stage heat with anyone or have you heard any stories of problems with him? I can imagine being shoved down everyone’s throat as superman would garner atleast some resentment towards him backstage (even if he’s not the one booking himself that way)

I haven’t heard about any problems with John Cena lately. There was some talk a couple of years ago that he was pretty lazy when it came to the wrestling part of the job, but I haven’t heard anything about people not liking him or anything like that. I have heard about tension between Cena & Triple H back in 2005, but nothing in the recent past. By all accounts Cena seems like a decent guy that does whatever the company asks him to do and does it well. I can see how that might get on people’s nerves.

2) I remember Hulk Hogan was on Jay Leno one time and he said he was going to run for president a few years down the line (I think he gave the specific year he would do it but I cant remember). Was he really planning to run and it just never happened, or was he totally lying to get himself over or something?

Hogan was jealous of Jesse Ventura winning the governorship of Minnesota and wanted to get some attention. He never actually planned on running, it was just a publicity stunt that helped get his “retirement” over. Well, nobody actually believed Hogan was retiring from wrestling, but it was semi-surprising when he made a comeback on the January 4, 1999 edition of Nitro to beat Kevin Nash for the WCW title. With a fingerpoke.

But that’s a whole other can of worms…

G Mac brings us two questions from the land of Roddy Piper and kilts…

Whats your opinion on the idea of having a losers title? Iv been thinking about this for a while, and think it may create a few good angles and stories. The title would start off with someone random and they have to carry the belt until they beat someone by pin or submission, you could add a stip like they get suspended if they refuse etc. Anyway, it would start at the top somewhere, perhaps creating a wrestler with a losing steak, and then perhaps work its way down to heat or something..and then with the wwe’s idea of anyone can beat anyone, a fluke win for a loser can breath some life into it and pass it back up the ranks. Im not sure how much shelf life it would have, but think it might be interesting.

I remember one of my friends having an idea like this in 6th grade or so. He acted it out with his wrestling figures…it was kinda fun, but I don’t think too many guys would be volunteering to hold the title. Besides, they’ve already had the Hardcore title.

Also, whats your opinion Bret Hart these days, and by that I mean, just before Vinces’s limo got blown up, on the appreciation night thing, he had his opinion on Vince broadcast. Do you know if that was old footage from when he was part of the wwe (or even wcw) or was that actually new? Just seems a bit strange that he would do that, and then he wasnt even one of the suspects. I thought if it was new, then Vince would make him a main suspect in an attempt to get him back on tv.

Well, Bret could have ended up being a “main suspect”, but we’ll never know where that whole thing was heading. It was new footage that they shot just days before Raw was aired…Bret seems to be on pretty good terms with WWE these days, though I still don’t expect him to ever come back to television on a regular basis. It’s nice to see that Bret isn’t all that bitter these days. I was never one of those guys like Penguin who couldn’t understand why Bret wasn’t happy about the wrestling business and how he left the WWF, but I’m glad that he’s moved on and it doesn’t bother him anymore.

Hello all, I’ve been a reader of this website for about 7 years now. It is a great way to keep up on current events and I regularly read your columns either when I have downtime at the office or am lounging at home. I thank you all for your writing efforts over the years. Last December I decided to start posting in the forums section. Over the course of that time a forum administrator named “Coren” has repeatedly started flame wars with me. He managed to convince the whole forum that I was an old poster named “Dream”, whom was apparently banned from the site for life for porn spamming. In his crusade against me he managed to turn virtually the entire forum against me based on these accusations, but I just took it all in stride. Today this issue claim to a head as I called Coren out why he just didn’t ban me if I really was this person. Coren feeling trapped then banned me from the site. That is fine, as these childish games have run their course. As writers of this site I think you should want the juvenile antics of this administrator to be addressed however. With the efforts you all put into your columns I’m certain you don’t want an administrator like this driving away your audience. Even if I remain banned I’m certain Coren will just abuse his powers towards another poster.

P.S. After the ban my user title was changed from Loose Cannon to “Loose Asshole”. No doubt this was done by Coren. I doubt you want that vulgar user title all over your website. Just further note on the disregard this administrator has for the other readers who may see that as distasteful.

I generally stay out of forum politics and try to avoid message boards in general, but I have to say that Coren and I go pretty far back and he’s good people. As my homie Penguin says, he’s far too lazy to be evil. If I could give any of you message board people advice, it would be not to take shit so damn seriously. I would also advise you to stay off of message boards because they will be the death of you.

Seriously though, you gotta take a step back and wonder what’s gone wrong in your life if you’re e-mailing all sorts of people and complaining about a message board administrator hurting your feelings. Go outside…unless it’s too hot. Then I suggest reading this column, playing video games, or watching some porn.

And if anything’s offensive on the Forum, it’s the avatar some poster has of CM Punk’s crotch. That’s pretty fucking disgusting.

Im trying to get hold of the entrance music for one Mr Perfect, its not on any of the WWE/WWF cd’s tha I have and then I found out he used the theme from Exodus… so I bought the soundtrack for said movie and was quite excited until I put it on and couldn’t find the damn song on it!

So, where can I get said song? – Paul from England

I had no luck finding the song on the Internet, but I did have luck in finding all sorts of pop-up ads and trojans. Woohoo! Readers?

That’s all the time we have for this week. Thanks so much for reading…if you’ve got anything to add or ask or whatever, make sure and send it to [email protected]! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to find somewhere that isn’t too freaking hot.
