411 ROH Roundtable Preview: Boston & Edison – 4/11 & 4/12

April 11, 2008 | Posted by Samuel Berman

Hello and welcome to this week’s 411 Ring of Honor Roundtable Preview. This weekend is a big one for ROH, as the shows will feature the United States debut of Japanese freelance superstar Kota Ibushi. Furthermore, “Mr. Wrestling” Kevin Steen will try to cement his ROH legacy by supplanting ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness as the company’s top player. Though a head injury to former ROH World Champion Austin Aries caused some major last-minute changes to this weekend’s cards, Ring of Honor seems intent on putting on top shelf matches throughout the weekend, including a star-studded Four Corner Survival on Friday and Jay & Mark Briscoe’s bid at the ROH World Tag Team Titles on Saturday. Before we get to our picks, let’s get a look at this week’s contributing 411 writers:

Stuart James,

Jarrod Westerfeld, of Your Viral Dose of Reality,

Ari Berenstein, of Column of Honor,

Michael Bauer, of the ECW Recap,

And me, Samuel Berman, of The Independent Mid-Card.

Now that you’ve gotten a look at the staff, here is our preview for this weekend’s events. Cards are current as of Wednesday, 4/9.

FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2008 – BOSTON, MA

Jigsaw vs. Eddie Edwards
Stuart James: This, I expect, will be a nice little opener, if it opens the show as I think it will. It’s two styles that should blend together nicely, but since I’m not as caught up on the RoH undercard, I don’t know any of the angles these two are in, so I’ll hazard a guess at Eddie Edwards.

Winner: Eddie Edwards

Jarrod Westerfeld: Boston’s own Eddie Edwards looks to take on the weak link of the Vulture Squad, Jigsaw. Sympathetic face, Jigsaw, has drawn the ire of the fans since demasking himself to show the emotion Julius Smokes wants from him, so sympathetic face, Jigsaw, loses here to the hometown boy as the BLK OUT play some sort of role as detractors in the crowd.

Winner: Eddie Edwards

Ari Berenstein: Boston likes them some Eddie Edwards, but I still don’t see it. Sorry Boston, I’m just thankful this one doesn’t take place in the Tri-State area.

Winner: Eddie Edwards

Michael Bauer: To say Jigsaw needs momentum right now is like saying Austin Aries is smarter than Jigsaw’s stable mate by taking time off for a injury… it’s smart money speaking. Jigsaw has Edwards again in a triple threat the next night, which only means Edwards won’t get pinned twice in one weekend.

Winner: Jigsaw

Samuel Berman: I hope everyone will excuse my brevity in this roundtable, but I’m running up on deadline. I refuse to comment on this match.

Winner: Jigsaw

411 Staff Picks: Eddie Edwards (3-2)

Six Man Elimination Match: Claudio Castagnoli, Delirious & Pelle Primeau vs. Larry Sweeney, Chris Hero & Brent Albright
Stuart James: Wow, how long have Castagnoli and Hero been feuding? I think its time to end the feud in a big match at the next pay-per-view, as its just becoming very repetitive. For this match, I’d wager that Castagnoli’s team goes over.

Winners: Claudio Castagnoli, Delirious & Pelle Primeau

Jarrod Westerfeld: Pelle’s dead. 5 minutes into this match, I see Pelle being tossed out early by Albright, nothing more need be said about that. What I can’t understand is why Pelle is getting this much usage on the ROH roster when Mitch Franklin is the better of the ROH students – all Pelle is good for is doing a hell of a sell job. I can see the bout coming down to Hero and Sweeney battling a still surviving Claudio. As a matter of fact, I’d like to see that they battle while “I Will Survive” plays on the PA, as Claudio kicks out of everything under the sun. End result could come down to Claudio finally cornering Larry, only for Albright to play a role on the run-in, costing Claudio once more.

Winner: Sweet n’ Power (Larry Sweeney, Brent Albright, & Chris Hero)

Ari Berenstein: Larry Sweeney is currently using the claim that he is the only undefeated wrestler in ROH to draw legitimate heel heat and I think he should ride that train for all it is worth. I think Sweeney’s team wins here and I’ll go so far to say as it will be a clean sweep.

Winner: Sweet & Sour Inc.

Michael Bauer: This match just has “heel bullshit” written all over it. We all know Pelle is the first to be eliminated, leaving us with the obvious heel advantage. Something tells me it will come down to Claudio vs. Hero and Sweeney, which Sweet N’ Sour once again looking to outsmart Claudio.

Winners: Sweet N’ Sour

Samuel Berman: This feud should have been over months ago, but won’t end here for reasons surpassing my understanding.

Winners: Larry Sweeney, Chris Hero & Brent Albright

411 Staff Picks: Larry Sweeney, Chris Hero & Brent Albright (4-1)

Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Jack Evans & Ruckus
Stuart James: God I love Ring of Honor tag wrestling. I have minor gripes with the shows and the booking, but tag team wrestling in Ring of Honor is second to nobody, and while that doesn’t say much in this day and age, it is a compliment nonetheless. This match, like the entire card as a whole, looks like it could be really awesome, but unfortunately might suffer from being “just another insane Briscoes spotfest”, however insane Briscoes spotfests are usually really fun. With a hardcore massacre, a potentially awesome technical match, a potential great underdog World Title match, this one could be our proverbial spot-heavy tag match. I can’t call the winners here, so I’m gonna say Briscoes, to keep them strong for the next night.

Winners: Jay & Mark Briscoe

Jarrod Westerfeld: Evans and Ruckus teaming up against the Briscoes, who aren’t the tag champions anymore and have to settle back into life where they can lose the odd match or two, I’ve got to believe the Vulture Squad, as defunct as they seem right now, to fly over here with a win, further putting emphasis on Jigsaw being the weak link. At least, I think that’s what they’ll do here – again, who knows with Dutch Sapolsky.

Winner: Jack “Is Gangsta”, & Ruckus

Ari Berenstein: I have a feeling Boston will be receiving a BLK OUT during the show, most likely during this match. Kingston & Co. will be out to distract Ruckus, leading to The Briscoes taking advantage and hitting a springboard Doomsday Device for the win.

Winner: The Briscoes

Michael Bauer: If one thing is certain, it is that all four men can be as insane as anybody when it comes to their moves. Evans and Ruckus could use the win more, but The Briscoes have a tag team title shot the next night. No way they drop here.

Winners: The Briscoes

Samuel Berman: I won’t pick the Briscoes to lose, even though I think it’s possible.

Winners: Jay & Mark Briscoe

411 Staff Picks: Jay & Mark Briscoe (4-1)

Kota Ibushi vs. Davey Richards
Stuart James: Words cannot describe how good this match will be. Davey Richards, the closest thing to Chris Benoit and Dynamite Kid in the world, facing off against Japanese’s hottest young prospect. All I can say is thank you Gabe Sapolsky, because I am a mark for both these men, and will buy the DVD instantly if this match is even HALF as good as I think it will be. The winner should be Ibushi, but this one can go either way, but as with most debuts it SHOULD go to the debutant.

Winner: Kota Ibushi

Jarrod Westerfeld: In all honesty, I don’t even know if I’ve seen a SINGLE Ibushi match, so I don’t know how well this match may play off but I’m hoping for the best seeing as Richards seems to work really well with just about anyone. And much is like the tradition with debuts in ROH, I don’t see Ibushi winning here, though he’ll still impress the crowd, if we’re lucky that the dumb crowds stay at home – thank you very much 6th Anniversary Show.

Winner: Dynamite Junior

Ari Berenstein: It’s a highly touted Japanese wrestler’s debut in ROH. This is not rocket science here. Let’s hope the crowd takes to Kota and likes the action he brings to the ring.

Winner: Kota Ibushi

Michael Bauer: Kota Ibushi’s first match is against Davey Richards. Wow, who did Davey piss off? Ring of Honor has made a big deal about Ibushi, so I can’t see them letting him lost his first match with the promotion.

Winner: Kota Ibushi

Samuel Berman: Ibushi shouldn’t be matched up with Richards in the first place.

Winner: Kota Ibushi

411 Staff Picks: Kota Ibushi (4-1)

Boston Massacre Match: Necro Butcher vs. Kevin Steen
Stuart James: This should be awesome in every sense of the word. I’m expecting a brutal, insane, stiff, blood-fest, with each man trying to out-do one another in terms of craziness. Oh, there will be blood in this one! As for my pick, I think it’s important to have Kevin Steen strong for his match with McGuiness the next night, although Necro Butcher also has a title match the next night – however the RoH World Title has to be kept stronger.

Winner: Kevin Steen

Jarrod Westerfeld: Blood by the gallons, broken bones by the piles, and doses of pain delivered by the buckets. We get to see Necro kicking, punching, slapping, stomping and hurling inanimate objects about in order to beat on Steen, while Kevey-Kev looks to chop, kick, package, toss, slam and suplex his way to victory here. If Necro could withstand nasty, no protection head shots at the hands of Stevens and Strong at 6th Year Anniversary, I can’t see him losing this one easy, so Kevin may just have to fall here.

Winner: Party with the NECRO!

Ari Berenstein: Boston Massacre huh? Might as well just fly a plane overhead with a neon flashing sign that says: NECRO BUTCHER ABOUT TO TAKE UNPROTECTED CHAIRSHOTS. COME LOOK! Anyway, Kevin Steen has an ROH World Title shot the next night in Edison. Ergo, he wins this match. The only question is will they run an injury angle to create uncertainty and doubt about Steen’s ability to fight the next night? I say Steen comes up with a bloody win, but a win nonetheless.

Winner: Kevin Steen

Michael Bauer: Simply put, having this match a day before Steen takes on Nigel McGuiness is a fucking bigger mistake than Samoa Joe not winning the TNA Title while still with Ring of Honor in 2006 or even in 2007. Kevin Steen being in this match could jeopardize the main event scheduled, because Necro Butcher is just the fucking insane. Then again, it could be great for the storyline of Nigel being an ass about not wanting to hear that his opponent is injured after all the shit the fans have given him. Still, I can’t Steen losing before his title shot, injury forthcoming or not.

Winner: Kevin Steen

Samuel Berman: Steen survives to look strong on Saturday.

Winner: Kevin Steen

411 Staff Picks: Kevin Steen (4-1)

Four Corner Survival (Winner Earns ROH World Title Shot): Roderick Strong vs. Rocky Romero vs. Erick Stevens vs. El Generico
Stuart James: With the unexpected injury to Austin Aries pretty much means that unless RoH do something very surprising (and stupid, in my opinion), its pretty much a foregone conclusion, in my book, that McGuiness walks out as champion. On the other hand, the thing that’s great about RoH matches is that it makes it seem like anyone can win any match, and a person great for getting the crowd behind him enough to believe he can win is El Generico, so I’d go with him to pick up the win here.

Winner: El Generico

Jarrod Westerfeld: So two members of the NRC get a shot to move on to challenge for the ROH World Champion, leaving Stevens and Generico to have to bond together in order to avoid being picked off. Generico and Romero can easily dispatch of one another as Stevens and Strong continue their battle that dates back to the NRC and Resilience feud, last year. Unlike the last time I saw Stevens in this role, I’m going to bank on Generico being the dark horse that slips by this challenge to further show the dominance of the challengers to the NRC’s tag team titles.

Winner: OLE! El Generico

Ari Berenstein: I’m a mark for elimination style matches, so let me first voice my opinion that it sucks for ROH to alter this match from an elimination to a plain Four Corner one fall match. Also, it’s the second time that Nigel was slated for a four way elimination match and will not participate in said match. Ooops, shouldn’t give the Nigel Hater Nation something else to complain about. My initial pick before the change was the final fall to be McGuinness vs. Stevens, but I don’t think that’s a big enough singles match to main event here. I’ll call for the big underdog win by El Generico, which should lead to a fun main event match with the crowd pulling for a big upset.

Winner: El Generico

Michael Bauer: Rocky and Roderick against one another should be quite interesting, if it comes down to that, and we know it will. Stevens being in here makes sense for his problems with the NRC, mainly Strong. Generico is obvious in here with his problems with the NRC as well. But how funny would it be for Generico to get his World Title shot a day before Kevin Steen gets his second ever shot (he did face Morishima once I believe)… let the comedy ensue!! But you see, everyone else is making that pick. So I will go a different route here. Ring of Honor is not afraid to make heel vs. heel matches as we saw for the last Pay Per View Taping, so why not go champion vs. champion and having Roderick Strong challenge?

Winner: Roderick Strong

Samuel Berman: I picked Strong at The Cool Kids’ Table and I’m sticking with it here, despite Generico being the best move by ROH.

Winner: Roderick Strong

411 Staff Picks: El Generico (3-2-0-0)

ROH World Title: Nigel McGuinness © vs. Winner of Four Corner Survival
Stuart James: As stated earlier, I see El Generico as the winner of the FCS, as I don’t see them doing heel-heel match to headline the event, and Generico vs. McGuiness would be a much fresher match than Stevens vs. McGuiness. This match, regardless, should be a great match, as the substitution of Aries will mean Gabe Sapolsky will do everything he can to put on a great match to give the fans their money’s worth. I don’t see McGuiness losing outside of a pay-per-view, but stranger things have happened. For now, my pick is the safe bet …

Winner: Nigel McGuiness

Jarrod Westerfeld: Nigel McLariat destroys all, and with Generico being weakened from the battle earlier in the night, much like Black was weakened by his earlier competition before taking on the champion, I see the same result – Generico putting up a valiant effort but burning out towards the end.

Winner: Nigel McLariat (RETAINS ROH World Title)

Ari Berenstein: Nigel vs. El Generico to my recollection has never been done before in ROH. I’m looking forward to Nigel throwing some lumber around and El Generico doing some fantastic comebacks to underscore the possibility he could win. Ultimately Generico becomes a warning message to Kevin Steen, who fights against Nigel for the title the following night.

Winner: Nigel McGuinness to retain the ROH World Title

Michael Bauer: Yeah, so I’ll go with Roderick Strong attempting to become a double champion and try to add even more gold to the No Remorse Corps. Makes sense, but it is never gonna happen.

Winner: Nigel McGuinness

Samuel Berman: Nigel’s next money opponent is Steen, so why derail that match?

Winner and STILL ROH World Champion: Nigel McGuinness

411 Staff Picks: Nigel McGuinness (5-0)

SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 2008 – EDISON, NJ

Jigsaw vs. Eddie Edwards vs. Mitch Franklin
Stuart James: If there’s one complaint I make about RoH’s booking, it’s the use of Triple Threat matches and Fatal Four Ways, etc, just for the sake of it, with no real reasoning behind it. You want them to go at it? Give it a cheap, NWA styled stipulation such as $50,000, or what have you. And much like the first night involving Jigsaw and Edwards, I know nothing of the angle, so my prediction is a pure guess here.

Winner: Jigsaw

Jarrod Westerfeld: So…this is basically a rematch from the night before, with Mitch Franklin added to the mix? Okay, this time I’m banking on Mitch Helms to win.

Winner: Mini-Gregory Helms, Mitch Franklin

Ari Berenstein: Oh good lord, this one IS taking place in the Tri-State area! Um…so why is this match different from the last night’s match? It’s got an ROH student in it! Woooo! I am SO pumped for this! FEEL THE ENERGY! RRRRRAAAAAA!

Winner: Jigsaw

Michael Bauer: Read what I said before about Jigsaw… just know that Mitch takes the pinfall.

Winner: Jigsaw

Samuel Berman: Different night, same story.

Winner: Jigsaw

411 Staff Picks: Jigsaw (4-1)

Erick Stevens & Pelle Primeau vs. Chris Hero & Bobby Dempsey
Stuart James: This match should be a fine match, even if its not exactly going to mean too much in the long haul, it should be good, inoffensive fun, with Hero being his usual heelish self and Erick Stevens continuing to impress. Once again, I barely know the angle going on here, so I’m going to say the faces win.

Winners: Erick Stevens & Pelle Primeau

Jarrod Westerfeld: Pelle gets too much love on the main roster. And Dempsey is still holding Hero back from actually getting some real wins to establish him on the roster – damned conspiracy theories. I can see Hero losing just because Dempsey is still over, and Gabe apparently hates that.

Winner: Erick Stevens & Pelle Primeau

Ari Berenstein: In this match, the role of Colin Delaney will be played by Pelle Primeau. The role of Tommy Dreamer will be played by Erick Stevens. Wait, no…maybe its Dempsey who is Delaney and Hero who is Dreamer? I’m getting confused. Anyway, it should be a good time to see Dempsey get served by Hero throughout the match and it seems like this is a match to help Stevens get some steam back after likely being a part of the losing team in Boston.

Winner: Erick Stevens & Pelle Primeau

Michael Bauer: OH MY GOD!!! Why could I not have tickets to this match? Bobby Dempsey is gonna be the most over guy of the night, especially if he makes the pinfall and Hero berates him for it and breaks up the pin attempt. Hero loses this match after a whole shit load of shenanigans.

Winners: Stevens and Pelle

Samuel Berman: Should be a ton of fun, especially when Hero gets upset with Bobby.

Winners: Erick Stevens & Pelle Primeau

411 Staff Picks: Erick Stevens & Pelle Primeau (5-0)

No DQ: Roderick Strong vs. Necro Butcher
Stuart James: Wow, Necro’s going through a rough weekend. A match with Kevin Steen on the first night and as if he isn’t tough enough, he has to fight one of the stiffest guys in the company tonight. If it was anyone but Necro, I’d call them crazy, but its just commonplace for him. I can’t wait for this match, as it promises to be another hard hitting, insane match, just like the match with Steen the previous night. However, I’m going to predict the only title change of the weekend now, as I can’t see Necro losing twice in one weekend.

Winner: Necro Butcher

Jarrod Westerfeld: Why is Necro only involved in hardcore matches? I know that’s Necro’s thing, but wouldn’t it also be nice to see Necro try and work a match without a steel chair? Anyway, this will be a blood bath, much like the 6th Anniversary Show triple threat encounter for the FIP Championship, so expect Necro to lose a few more brain cells and question why he didn’t become an architect. I think I see the FIP Champion surviving this bout long enough to keep Necro out of the title hunt for a while longer.

Winner: Wode-wick Stwong

Ari Berenstein: If this is non title I see Necro doing some impressive damage and getting the win here. I think that could lead to a future FIP title shot for him down in Florida.

Winner: Necro Butcher

Michael Bauer: Something tells me Necro is gonna need a lot of ice after this weekend. Strong got the pinfall in New York during the triple threat FIP Title match, so I think he returns the favor here. Especially if they keep it non-title.

Winner: Necro Butcher

Samuel Berman: Dragon Gate booking says one faction’s leader doesn’t lose to another faction’s lowest guy. QED.

Winner: Roderick Strong

411 Staff Picks: Necro Butcher (3-2)

Jack Evans vs. El Generico
Stuart James: This match, should be sixteen shades of awesome, and then some! El Generico, the human bumping machine with no spine taking on Jack Evans, the guy who should be a paraplegic by now. I hope they get given a lot of time to develop a story instead of a meaningless spot-fest, because I feel these guys could do a lot. I’d love to see Generico go over here, as he is so (surprisingly) over with the fans ever since the beginning of the Steenerico/Briscoes feud.

Winner: El Generico

Jarrod Westerfeld: Leader of a unit that seems to be dismantling in front of our very eyes taking on a strong looking secondary member of a tag unit. Will BLK OUT play a part here to ensure the Vulture Squad continue to skid further? I’m banking on it.

Winner: OLE! El Generico

Ari Berenstein: Pardon me while I touch the sky.

Winner: Jack Evans

Michael Bauer: The match should be real fun as both men can turn it up a nitch when needed. Evans need this win more than Generico I think, but Jigsaw picking up wins helps if Evans goes 0 for 2. I just think he might also.

Winner: El Generico

Samuel Berman: Interestingly, this would main event a PWG show…

Winner: El Generico

411 Staff Picks: El Generico (4-1)

Delirious vs. Brent Albright
Stuart James: Brent Albright has to be kept really strong here, and I still find the Delirious character very stale. Albright is a guy I see as a potential main eventer in RoH, with a great gimmick and badass matches, and Delirious doesn’t need a win to keep strong, and it shouldn’t hurt him too much if he loses. Logic says Albright goes over.

Winner: Brent Albright

Jarrod Westerfeld: So basically this a rematch from Rising Above? Well, Delirious already has an impressive victory over Albright so far, plus he’s the sympathetic face that can always afford to lose and stay over, so I see Bret, in his fabulous toga, tossing Delirious about from here to Timbuktu!

Winner: TOGA~ Albright

Ari Berenstein: Its Déjà vu all over again. Hopefully Larry Sweeney is present to invoke some shenanigans and makes this pairing freshened up.

Winner: Brent Albright

Michael Bauer: So after Albright gets eliminated by Delirious in the elimination match… wait, I didn’t say that before. Well, it happens and Albright gets revenge here.

Winner: Brent “Animal House” Albright

Samuel Berman: I’ll give Delirious the win just because.

Winner: Delirious

411 Staff Picks: Brent Albright (4-1)

Kota Ibushi vs. Claudio Castagnoli
Stuart James: I’m not as stoked for this match as I am for the Richards match for some reason, but this should be a wonderful match. Kota Ibushi, as is the case with most double-night RoH wrestlers, will probably win one and lose one, and as I had him winning against Davey Richards I see him losing this one. But Castagnoli is a fantastic wrestler, and he will play the power wrestler trying to push down Ibushi’s fast offence. While this match, and this card as a whole doesn’t look as impressive as the first night, this should be really really, really good.

Winner: Claudio Castagnoli

Jarrod Westerfeld: I foresee Ibushi rebounding from the loss the night before and beating out Claudio. That’s all I’m going to say about this.

Winner: Kota Ibushi

Ari Berenstein: I’m expecting good things from this match. It sets up to be the show stealer because it fits right in with Claudio’s wheelhouse of having very good matches against speedsters and high fliers. I was going to go with Kota winning in the original match against Aries as a way to spin off Aries into rejecting the Age of the Fall. Now I’m switching my pick because I believe ROH is going to try to ready Claudio as a main event challenge to Nigel and he could use another high profile win to keep the momentum going.

Winner: Claudio Castagnoli

Michael Bauer: Claudio has “stepped up” to accept this challenge. Claudio tends to put on great matches with Japanese talent, so one hopes this is the same. Ibushi loses in my mind in night one, so night two goes to the outsider.

Winner: Kota Ibushi

Samuel Berman: I think they’ll go a strange route and do a draw leading to Claudio teaming with Ibushi in Detroit.

Winner: Draw

411 Staff Picks: Draw (2-2-1)

ROH World Tag Team Titles: Davey Richards & Rocky Romero © vs. Jay & Mark Briscoe
Stuart James: Once again, this is where the PPV deal makes the lesser shows suffer, as very few people expect a title change outside of PPVs. However, I can see this being another case of being a really outstanding tag team match. Richards & Romero deserve a really long reign, especially until Davey Richards gets a main event push, so I can see them retaining here in a grueling great match.

Winners: Davey Richards & Rocky Romero

Jarrod Westerfeld: Briscoes getting the titles? No, I don’t think so. I think this is the summer we see El Steenerico play the role of the chasing challengers, only to snap up the victory and finally start rolling with the victories over the Briscoe Brothers that they deserved last year. I expect some shenanigans from Richards and Romero, leaving the Briscoes incapacitated to break up a pin fall at the end that sends them out of the title hunt picture for a while.

Winner: No Charisma Corps – Except for Rocky…he has CHARISMA~ (Richards & Romero RETAIN)

Ari Berenstein: I think Steen & Generico are next in line for winning the gold, so this would be the match the former champions get where it seems like they could win the belts back but don’t. It should be a good one though as I think both teams have great chemistry against the other.

Winner: The NRC to retain the ROH World Tag Team Titles

Michael Bauer: Wow, this is tough. A part of me wants to have The Briscoes gets the titles back, yet a part of me doesn’t, because Steen-erico vs. The Briscoes I don’t need to see again. The NRC most likely will retain here, but this match should be pretty damn good.

Winners: No Remorse Corps

Samuel Berman: Briscoes don’t need the belts, as their match with the MCMG sells itself.

Winners and STILL ROH World Tag Team Champions: Davey Richards & Rocky Romero

411 Staff Picks: Davey Richards & Rocky Romero (5-0)

ROH World Title: Nigel McGuinness © vs. Kevin Steen
Stuart James: Since my pick for the previous night was Nigel McGuiness, my bet for this one is naturally McGuiness vs. Steen. This should be a really good brawl, with very intense. If all my predictions come to fruition from the previous night, I expect this is to be slightly worse than the Generico match. I’m laughing right now at the RoH wrestling boards plastered with dreams of Generico vs. Steen for the World Title on 4/12. Keep dreaming, because “McLariat”, whether you like it or not, is holding onto the title.

Winner: Nigel McGuiness

Jarrod Westerfeld: Lariat vs. Package Piledriver. In the latest Video Wire, Steen declares he will be wearing ROH gold in 2008, and I believe him. I just don’t believe the gold he’ll be wearing is World Title gold. I see McGuinness battling this one out and stealing up a big win.

Winner: Nigel McLariat (RETAINS ROH World Title)

Ari Berenstein: Steen is going to give it an honest go of things. However it’s not quite his time just yet. The fans will be fired up to see him deal some punishment and I expect them to buy into a lot of the false finishes. It should be exciting, but ultimately Nigel will work his way to the win. Or looking at it from another perspective, I don’t buy two title switches in a row occurring in Edison, NJ. I think that Nigel and Steen will be involved in huge title matches at Hammerstein, but in my mind I see it as Nigel defending the ROH World Title and Steenerico challenging for the ROH tag straps.

Winner: Nigel McGuinness to retain the ROH World Title

Michael Bauer: Steen will wear RoH Gold this year, but it is not this weekend and it is not the World Title.

Winner: Nigel McGuiness

Samuel Berman: I wish they’d move the belt to Steen here, but it’s just not happening

Winner and STILL ROH World Champion: Nigel McGuinness

411 Staff Picks: Nigel McGuinness (5-0)
