The Shimmy 09.27.08: The Hardy Report Card (Part Five)

October 27, 2008 | Posted by Andy Clark

Greetings, earthlings. We have now taken over your 411…

2003 Royal Rumble Match (Royal Rumble 2003)

I’ve always been a big fan of this particular Royal Rumble Match. There is nonstop action throughout and there are absolutely no dead spots. I believe this is the first time Matt and Jeff had the opportunity to be in the ring with one another since Matt turned on Jeff back in August and they played off that fact here as the two brothers faced off. Shannon Moore even took a bullet for Matt as Jeff delivered a Swanton to the MFer. Jeff’s elimination in this match would actually lead to a very short lived heel run on Raw.

My Grade: A

Jeff Hardy vs. Chris Jericho (No Way Out 2003)

Jeff was substituting for Test, who was being punished for missing his flight to a Raw show in the weeks leading up to this show. Jericho’s real feud was with Shawn Michaels, and after WWE realized that Jeff as a heel wasn’t working they booked him as HBK’s protégé. Jeff would even team with Michaels in an at-the-time-rare Raw appearance for HBK as they took on Jericho and Christian in a No DQ Match. This match was much better than Jericho-Test probably would have been so I don’t think many people complained about the substitution. They did a great job at getting fans to bite on the nearfalls even though there was no way Hardy was winning. This is exactly what the opening match of a PPV should be, a fun, up-tempo match that gets the crowd into things. This would be Jeff’s last PPV match in WWE for six years as he’d be released shortly after this.

My Grade: A-

Cruiserweight Title Match: Billy Kidman© vs. Matt Hardy (No Way Out 2003)

Over on SmackDown Matt Hardy had set his sights on the Cruiserweight Title. Billy Kidman was the champion, well, just because so that put him up against Hardy. Hardy would have to “make weight” to compete for the belt and the weeks leading up to this saw Shannon Moore working with him to get him in shape. Kidman was rather overmatched here but they still had a fun match. Billy Kidman always seemed to deliver in the rare PPV appearances he was granted and this was no different. Matt Hardy would go on to be one of the more interesting Cruiserweight Champions in WWE history (although I understand that’s not saying too much).

My Grade: B+

Cruiserweight Title Match: Matt Hardy© vs. Rey Mysterio (WrestleMania XIX)

This is a match that is often overlooked because it’s relatively short, but if you look at it objectively it’s a pretty darn good match. And really for a midcard Cruiserweight Title Match it was silly for us to expect a particularly long match anyhow, especially when the World Tag Team Title Match got pumped to Heat. I think many people thought this would be Rey Mysterio’s big moment to win the title but it was the cheating heel that walked away with the title (this might sound familiar later in the column). These two would have two fantastic matches on SmackDown later in the summer where Rey would finally get his big win.

My Grade: B+

Bar Room Brawl: JBL vs. Ron Simmons vs. Matt Hardy vs. Shannon Moore vs. Brother Love vs. Sean O’Haire vs. John Morrison vs. Matt Cappotelli vs. Doug Basham vs. Danny Basham vs. Doink the Clown vs. Easter Bunny vs. Conquistador No. 1 vs. Conquistador No. 2 (Vengeance 2003)

Definitely a fun, yet weird, match. This was a special addition to SmackDown’s first ever brand exclusive PPV as the APA personally handed out invitations to this fight. The match is notable for the only PPV appearance of Matt Cappotelli (if you’re reading this I’m still pulling for you, Matt!) and I imagine the only PPV appearance of the Easter Bunny. IIRC, JBL won the match, as if there was any doubt.

My Grade: B

Matt Hardy vs. Zach Gowen (No Mercy 2003)

Aside from the win he needed to secure a job with WWE, the one legged wonder Zach Gowen had not won a match in WWE in his three months with the company. This match was actually supposed to happen at SummerSlam but Brock Lesnar destroyed his leg and then pushed his wheelchair down a flight of steps, so needless to say Zach couldn’t compete (For the record Matt got the victory at SummerSlam by forfeit, but I figured it didn’t need it’s own spot in the column). Somebody was going to have to be the first guy to job to Gowen and Matt Hardy was that guy. Not a shining moment in Hardy’s career, but I suppose it’s still better than being humped by Viscera during the Royal Rumble.

My Grade: C-

Matt Hardy vs. Maven (Armageddon 2003)

If this were a Larry Csonka column you would see a picture of squash here. A pissed off Batista destroyed Maven just before this and Matt picked the bones. Not much of an actual match.

My Grade: N/A

PPV in the Review: Bound for Glory IV

  • The show kicked off with the Steel Asylum match and it was definitely a good choice. Every now and then TNA throws out an old school X-Division spotfest match and they normally always deliver. I think this Steel Asylum match was better than the one they had a few months ago. Having Lethal win puzzled me at the time because I thought they’d book for a Consequences Creed title win later, but seeing as how Bashir won it all made sense. Of course Lethal would almost get squashed on the live Impact this past week, but c’est la vie.
  • I’ll be honest, I was out of the room for a good portion of the Knockout Bimbo Brawl and I haven’t bother to go back and watch what I missed. From what I saw it seemed passable enough and we got the desired outcome with a gore to Cute Kip. I still maintain that this match DID belong on the card because Rhino, and to a lesser extent the Beautiful People, deserved to have a spot on the biggest show of the year.
  • The X-Division Title was what it was. It probably could have been better, but there wasn’t anything wrong with it. If they wanted BFG to be their biggest show of the year they should have probably had the title change here, but instead we got heel antics. It looks like Sheik Abdul Bashir may get a decent little push post-BFG so I guess it’s no so bad that he retained, but I still would have liked to have seen Creed win the belt. I guess I should just be happy that they didn’t have that wounded soldier turn on Creed to cost him the match.
  • The Knockouts Title Match wasn’t bad, but I just don’t get into these Knockout Matches as much as some others do. I definitely think that if they weren’t going to switch the X-Division Title they should have switched the title here, but unfortunately they don’t care what I think. Roxxi should have won here and then dropped the belt to Kong on Impact if that’s what they wanted. The ending seemed to kind of come out of nowhere too.
  • The Monster’s Ball Match was awesome. These matches always deliver and since I don’t order TNA PPVs on a regular basis the hardcore schtick isn’t as old for me. Again, while I really like Beer Money as tag champs (they need to drop the Inc.) I think TNA needed to deliver a title change here, probably to Abyss & Morgan, or maybe even to Team 3D to play off the Main Event Mafia angle. Still, the match was crazy and it definitely rebounded from a slow beginning. Abyss is one crazy bastard for taking that fire spot. Foley shouldn’t be accusing Brother Ray of stealing his gimmick, he ought to be going after Abyss. I really liked that they gave this match a lot of time too because it made everything seem even more epic. The only real drawback was the guy that ate Steve McMichael that acted as the guest referee. SLOWEST. COUNT. EVER.
  • The Three-Way War was a nice little match but kind of underwhelming. Booker winning was pretty puzzling as he was the one guy I figured that wouldn’t, but I guess they needed to give him some momentum for joining the Main Event Mafia. It’s a shame Christian busted out the Super Unprettier and it didn’t even get to end the match. AJ Styles looked great here in the match and I look forward to him becoming a top guy again.
  • Angle vs. Jarrett was good, but again I feel it didn’t live up to its potential. It never really seemed to recover from the slow start but I’m glad Jarrett got to get a big win. The Foley interference was predictable but if it leads to an Angle vs. Foley match I’m fine with it. That’s a match I’ve wanted to see since they mixed it up back at WWE vs. ECW Head-to-Head. TNA may have another PPV buy on their hands with that one.
  • And then we have the main event. This was a great match right here, with the around the arena brawling and the total dominance on the part of Joe. This was probably the most “championlike” Joe has looked throughout his entire reign, although I was disappointed with the lack of the Samoan dancers. Joe looked great just dismantling Sting throughout the match and it was a cool visual to see Sting’s facepaint slowly start to wipe away until there was almost nothing left. As for the finish I have absolutely no problem with it. In fact, I’m GLAD they went with the finish they did. This Main Event Mafia vs. TNA Originals storyline has the makings to be big, and the kickoff to a big storyline is probably the only way a screwjob finish like this really works. If Joe had beaten Sting the storyline would have been dead in the water, but now it has some traction. And really they had built up to Nash turning on Joe so nicely that it was good to see it pay off in a major way. Really good match and the right booking, regardless of what most will have you believe.

    The Shimmy Likes It Raw!

What’s on tap for tonight’s show?

  • With Cyber Sunday in the past we look forward to Raw No. 800 (Not Really)and Survivor Series. What does the booking team have cooked up for those two big shows? We’ll find out tonight!
  • A very good Monday Night Football game tonight as Tennessee and Indianapolis square off. Will the Titans be able to stay perfect on the season?
  • A movie producer is after the rights for Lucas’ book on One Tree Hill tonight. Man I hope it’s “An Unkindness of Ravens” because “The Comet” sounds freaking terrible.

Well, that does it for this week’s column. Next week we check out 2004 and 2005 in the WWE life of Matt Hardy and review Cyber Sunday. Until then, don’t die. Clark…out.
