411’s ROH on HDNet Report 03.12.10: TV Tournament Begins (03.08.10)

March 12, 2010 | Posted by Aaron Hubbard

Great opening to the show as we get video clips of Tyler Black beating Austin Aries for the ROH World Championship. He celebrates with the babyfaces in the back, but Jim Cornette wants to know why he kicked him in the mouth. Black says he did what he felt he had to do; Corny says that he wanted to make Black the franchise player, but now he’s only worried about doing what’s best for Ring of Honor. Kenny King is in the back and takes us to Aries, who says that he deserves one rematch since Black got 167 rematches. He doesn’t care when or where, but it better be soon. Roderick Strong goes to ROH owner Cary Silken to demand the title shot that Tyler promised him, but Cary tells him to talk to Cornette. Jim shows up again to hype “The Big Bang” PPV and says he will render his decision on the title match tonight.

Cue the open. Rayna Von Tash who looks remarkably like Ashley Tisdale, (NOT complaining) comes to the ring with the new ROH Television Championship. The tournament to crown the inaugural champion starts now.

ROH Television Champion Tournament Round 1: Rhett Titus vs. Kevin Steen w/Steve Corino
Steen plays mind games by ripping up a “Kiss me Rhett, it’s my birthday!” sign. Hogewood says he’s been impressed with Titus in the ring. What is this, Rhett’s audition for a face turn? They grapple for a bit and Kevin misses a punch in the corner, Rhett gyrates and gets slapped. Steen hits a couple chops and a forearm, whips Rhett cross-corner but Titus jumps over him and hits a monkey in heat flip. Kevin goes up top and Rhett starts throwing rights, but Steen catches one and hits a diving knee drop to the arm. Wow. Kevin throws him shoulder-first into the post and to the outside, hammerlocks him and shoves him into the post again. Back inside, Steen punts the arm and hits a hammerlock Russian Legsweep for two. Titus starts fighting back with punches and a thumb to the eye, but Kevin gets the advantage again with a Divorce Court for two. Rhett avoids a slam and hits a Bob Holly-like dropkick.

They start trading punches and Titus comes back with a stinger splash, whipping Steen into the turnbuckle, hitting a spinning knee to the gut to set up a boot to the face, and that sets up the leapfrog rocker dropper for two. Steen counters an Irish Whip but gets kicked for telegraphing a back body drop, and Titus hits a running blockbuster for two. Steen counters the Muff Driver to an armbar, but Rhett rolls out only to be planted with the press powerbomb, which gets two for Kevin. Steen stomps the arm and goes up top, Titus fights him but slips going for the Super Sex Factor, and a second attempt ends with him being crotched and set into the tree of woe. Steen hits a cannonball and pulls Rhett to the center of the ring and finishes with the Crossface.
Winner: Kevin Steen (via arm-trap crossface) **1/2

Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak have a table now, and they hype up “The Big Bang” and take us to the title announcement. He sums up everything, calls them the top three singles competitors, and announces a Triple Threat for the show. Roddy gets pissed and starts demanding a title shot one-on-one; Corny calls him Bret Hart and Strong leaves. Aries proposes an alliance to Black, but Tyler tells him to “f*** off” and says he’ll beat him and kick sense into Roderick. Strong comes back and shoves Cornette and starts arguing with Tyler.

The Kings of Wrestling (Claudio Castagnoli & Chris Hero) w/Shane Hagadorn & Sara Del Ray vs. Lance & Harlem Bravado
This should be fun. FREAKING AWESOME pose sees Hero’s Rolling Elbow interlock with CC’s European Uppercut! They kick the Bravados before the bell and Hero tosses his guy outside. They hit a double back elbow and Claudio decks the brother before tagging out, and they drive the poor jobber into the corner. Hero hits a chop on Lance (so says Prazak) and a rolling elbow, Claudio tags in and hits a European Uppercut, and Hero is back in. Lance throws a few ineffective blows and Hero decks him with a bionic elbow. Double big boot from the Kings now and Claudio slingshots Lance into the bottom rope. Del Ray adds a kick for good measure and Hero hits a sliding kick. He places his boot on a buckle and slams Lance into it, hits a chop and fakes an elbow on Harlem. Lance ducks a boot and Harlem tags in, Lance catches a boot and Harlem hits an enzugiri.

Harlem hits Claudio with a hurracanrana, fights them both off but Hero hits a backdrop and Claudio turns it into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker! WOW! That was insane. Lance fights back but Claudio catches him and Hero hits an elbow Hart Attack style, which sets up the big swing and Hero connects with a dropkick on Lance. KRS-1! Greatest finisher in the history of our sport! SLAP THE PORPOISE!
Winners: The Kings of Wrestling (via KRS-1) **

Hero says they will beat the Briscoes, I think Claudio says the same thing in German, and Kings reign supreme. Yes they do.

The announcers inform us that The Necro Butcher is suspended from television thanks to knocking out the time-keeper in his brawl with Erick Stevens. Kyle Durdan interviews Prince Nana, who puts over the Kings of Wrestling, says Necro’s upset because he ran out of food stamps, and he sees nothing but dollar signs in Rasche Brown.

Skullkrusher Rasche Brown vs. Caleb Conley
Kings of Wrestling AND Rasche Brown? You’re kidding me… Rasche gives him a clean break, but Caleb shoves him. Moron. Brown decks him and hits a chop, but runs into a boot. Conley tries a springboard crossbody but Rasche ducks, FLIPPING SPEAR! Torture rack, Burning Hammer, 1-2-3!
Winner: Rasche Brown (via Burning Hammer) 3/4*

Durdan interviews Colt Cabana, who is excited about being champion of TV. He’s made for TV, like Billy Mays. Talk turns to El Generico and Cabana says this will be good for Generico because it gives him something to focus on. Corino shows up and puts over Steen before warning Colt to be careful who he stands up for.

More hype for The Big Bang, and they show video of Roderick going nuts. They also show The American Wolves losing to The Young Bucks and The Dark City Fight Club, both of which led to tension. Next week, Colt Cabana faces Eddie Edwards and Delirious takes on Davey Richards!

ROH Television Champion Tournament Round 1: El Generico vs. Kenny King
They trade waistlocks, Generico grabs a wristlock and Kenny gets a nice series of reversals into a front facelock. Generico counters to a hammerlock and King gets the ropes. He goads Generico into a test of strength and goes for a kick, but Generico catches it and spins Kenny before hitting chops. He gets the telegraph kick and his series of armdrags that send Kenny to the floor. He hops back in and mocks the “Ole!” taunt. He hits a knee to the gut and grabs a headlock, Generico throws him off and he hits a shoulder tackle, then puts him back in the headlock. Generico counters to a hammerlock but King manuevers into a Japanese Armdrag, knips up but runs into a leaping heel kick. Generico hits a backbreaker and King goes to the ropes, then hits a kick to the gut and snaps an arm over the top rope.

He works on the arm and chokes Generico in the corner, then hits a legdrop to the arm for two. He hits a suplex and floats over into a series of forearms and covers for two. Kenny applies a hammerlock with the other arm hooked ala an abdominal stretch, but Generico gets the ropes. Generico fights but Kenny gouges the eyes and leans on the turnbuckle, and then stomps Generico’s head. He whips Generico to the corner and hits a flying elbow for two, slaps Generico but gets slapped harder. They trade punches and King dropkicks the arm and whips him to the corner, but takes too much time stalling, and that allows Generico to make the Traditional Babyface Comeback (TBC) of two clotheslines and a back body drop. He clotheslines King to the floor, fakes a dive and kicks him in the face, and hits a huge seated quebrada! Generico hits a crossbody inside but it only gets two. Kenny blocks a backdrop suplex with elbows to the top of the head, but runs into the Generico Driver, which gets two.

Generico tunes up the band for the yakuza kick, but King comes in with the flying double knees for two! He hits a corner clothesline, dodges the yakuza kick and hits the capoiera kick! CORKSCRW ENZUGIRI and a lariat, but it only gets two! Generico avoids the Coronation, King elbows out of the half and half suplex, Generico avoids the double knees, HALF AND HALF SUPLEX! YAKUZA KICK! 1…2…NO! Generico goes up top, but King hits the super enzugiri, goes up top for a superplex but Generico puts him in the tree of woe, COAST TO COAST FLIPPING DROPKICK! 1…2…King grabs the rope! Generico goes up top, but King fights him, Generico fights him off, Kenny shoves the ref into the rope and trips up Generico; SUPER ROYAL FLUSH! 1…2…3! Great match save for the crowd, who didn’t seem to care.
Winner: Kenny King (via Super Royal Flush) ***3/4
