411’s WWE Smackdown Report 03.26.10

March 26, 2010 | Posted by Michael Uphoff

Matt Striker and Todd Grisham are your hosts for Friday Night Smackdown in San Jose! This is the go-home show for Wrestlemania XXVI! Man, I can’t wait for Wrestlemania. It’s killing me. Love the Smackdown intro video. It’s pretty amazing.

Kane comes out to the ring. I assume this is the MITB match then.

MITB Match- Smackdown vs. RAW- Kane, Dolph Ziggler, Matt Hardy, Shelton Benjamin, Drew McIntyre vs. Christian, MVP, Jack Swagger, Evan Bourne, and Kofi Kingston

Striker and Grisham put over MITB. Hardy got an insane pop, and Shelton got a fair one as well. We get a look at Axxess and what is going on there. Christian is INSANELY over. Nothing for Ziggler, Drew, or Swagger. Bourne is over. Kofi seems over as well.

The bell rings, and we have Ziggler and Kofi to start. They lock up, and Kofi gets a go behind. Ziggler counters, and then Kofi counters. Ziggler with some rights and then grabs a headlock and hits a shoulderblock. Kofi hits a huge dropkick for a quick 2. Commercial.

Back from commercial, Hardy lands some rights on Swagger. He Irish whips him, and hits the clothesline/bulldog combo. Hardy tags in Shelton, who works the arm. Swagger to the corner and lands some rights. Shelton hits some as well. Shelton hits a move, and then Swagger hits a belly-to-belly slam on Swagger. Shelton fights out of a reverse bearhug, and Bourne is in! Bourne with some high-octane offense, and Shelton counters. Double knee attack by Bourne gets 2. Bourne tags in Christian. Christian and Benjamin work some nice mat work and counters. Christian tags in MVP. MVP Irish whip countered, huge clothesline off the ropes gets 2. Bourne tagged in, goes for Air Bourne, stopped by Drew, goes for it again, but Shelton hits a huge belly-to-belly FROM THE TOP ROPE! Man, Bourne took that like a champ. Commercial.
Back from commercial, Shelton has a headlock locked in on Bourne. Bourne fights out, and Shelton tags in Kane. Kane with some corner offense. Scoop slam followed by an elbow drop off the ropes by Kane gets 2. Kane tags in Matt Hardy. Hardy with an elbow drop for 2. Hardy locks in a ground front sleeper. Bourne fights out but Hardy clubs him down and tags in Ziggler. They double-team and Ziggler covers for 2. Ziggler with some elbows for 2. Ziggler tags back in Hardy, who throws Bourne into the corner. He tags in Ziggler, who goes for the Zig Zag, but Bourne counters, and tags Christian! Irish whip, and Christian hits an elbow. Missile dropkick gets a close 2! Ziggler hits a chop block, gets the sleeper hold, but Christian gets to the corner and hits his kick. 2nd rope diving uppercut by Christian! Everyone hits moves and Kane double chokeslams Bourne and Kofi! Back with the legal men, Christian counters the Zig Zag into the Killswitch, but Drew blind tagged in! FUTURE SHOCK! 1…2…3!

Winners: Team Smackdown via Future Shock. Not bad. Really got to be convoluted near the end. **1/2
After the match, Drew gets a ladder and climbs, but everyone throws him off the ladder and hit him with it.

More from Wrestlemania Axxess. Pictures with Hornswoggle and other stuff. Looks cool.

Packages for Vickie/Beth and Jericho addressing the WWE Universe tonight are shown.

A nice package for the HBK/Taker match is shown to “Ain’t No Grave” by Johnny Cash. That is awesome.
Kevin Rudolf provides I Made It, the official theme song of Mania.

In Axxess, Lawler and Cole show us Hornswoggle’s pad. I’m crying. People get to do superstar entrances. They say that people can’t stand Drew, and only Vince wants him to win. Sounds about right to me. They also say that the only person no one likes is Chris Jericho. A video is shown over Edge’s return, winning the Rumble, and goes over the Edge-Jericho feud over the last month. Jericho and Edge one-up each other with Jericho getting the better of Edge last week by stomping on the Achilles’ tendon of Edge. 70% of Rumble winners win gold at Mania. Lawler and Cole say that Edge and Jericho are in the arena tonight, and that Vickie Guerrero and Beth have a match as well.

In Axxess, Cole and Lawler talk about championships and flying like Kofi Kingston. Cole and Lawler talk about Rey Mysterio and CM Punk, their rivalry, and their match at Wrestlemania. A video package highlighting the Punk-Mysterio feud. I get all this, with the showing of the video packages and all, but this is really not making a good show. One match in 45 minutes?

Back to San Jose, Josh Matthews asks ShowMiz if they’re ready for Wrestlemania. Miz goes overboard with comparisons, but promises to show Morrison what a KO punch is all about.

Vickie is walking in the back. Her match must be soon.

Another promo for Wrestlemania is shown.

The WWE Smack of the Night shows Tiffany’s debut, where Vickie caused the DQ and Beth knocked her down making the save. Also, Vickie making a match between her and Beth is shown.

Beth Phoenix vs. Vickie Guerrero

Beth is out to a loud pop. Vickie says Excuse me! Excuse me! I SAID EXCUSE ME! Vickie makes the match a 5-on-1 handicap match. Alicia Fox, McCool, Layla, and Maryse join Vickie. Striker burns Grisham with a great one.

Beth and Layla start. Beth lays out Layla with a right. Layla fights out to make a tag, but Beth drives her into the corner with huge power. Layla elbows out, but Beth takes her down. Beth brings in everyone but Vickie, hits two double clotheslines and cleans house. The numbers game catches up with her as McCool boots her in the face. Vickie wants in and gets the pin.

Winner: Vickie Guerrero- This was complete and utter shit. After the match, Vickie goes for a frogsplash, but Mickie, Kelly Kelly, and Gail Kim make the save and clear the ring. Beth and Vickie are left in the ring, and Beth grabs Vickie and strips off her pants. Vickie goes ape-shit and screams. Beth tries to apologize. With the aftermatch stuff, this was worth watching. I’ll rate this ¼* for entertainment purposes.

A package showing Cena and Batista’s match at Wrestlemania includes part of Batista’s AWESOME promo.

“Be Yourself” is one of the theme songs for Wrestlemania.

Tony Chimel asks us to welcome Chris Jericho to the ring. Jericho says that this Sunday, at Wrestlemania, the night where dreams come true, careers are made, or ended, he will retain the title. Jericho puts over Edge’s tenacity and heart and the fact that Edge keeps coming back. His passion, his love for you hypocrites. He has everything to beat Jericho, all the moves, all the heart, everything except DNA. DNA is the genetic makeup of every living organism on this planet. Jericho says his superior DNA made him champ, the first Undisputed Champion, the best wrestler of his generation, and the best in the world at what he does. Edge is a reject with defective DNA. Jericho says he will use his inferior DNA against him. He will end Edge’s career at Wrestlemania. He says that he will break Edge’s Achilles’ tendon at Mania. When your career is over, Edge, don’t blame yourself. Blame your DNA. EDGE is out! Rights by Edge knock down Jericho, and Edge sets for the spear, but Jericho bails! What was this, a fucking science lesson? I get the point, but the promo largely didn’t make sense.

They show footage of the Wrestlemania Reading Challenge.

Lawler and Cole pimp the limo that McMahon faked his own death in, and the Hart Dungeon. They go over the feud, and a video package is shown highlighting the feud, starting from Montreal and going to RAW last Monday. The song that they play in this package is really good and reinforces the concept. Lawler and Cole also plug the Undisputed Tag Team Title match, as well as the Show-Morrison match tonight on Smackdown. They also show the “you can’t beat me, John. Deep down, you know it” comment by Batista to John Cena during his AWESOME promo. That may have been Batista’s best promo ever.

Back at Axxess, you can get airbrushed ink tattoos of your favorite Superstars. You can also take a trip down Memory Lane with WWE memorabilia. They put over Wrestlemania and the WWE Title match between Cena and Batista. We now get a video package showing their feud, starting at Elimination Chamber. Lawler puts over Cena’s self-doubts about his match. They put over the Streak vs. Career match and say they’ll go over the HBK/Taker match next.

Wrestlemania Recall shows Wrestlemania 21, one of the greatest Wrestlemanias ever. They highlight the inception of and the match itself, the first MITB ladder match.

Lawler and Cole put over the Wrestlemania memorabilia, like HBK’s Wrestlemania outfits. Only a few feet from them is Taker’s graveyard, with a freshly dug grave for HBK’s career. Lawler and Cole then show us a great video package showing the match at Wrestlemania XXV and Shawn costing Taker the title, and then the rest of the feud. Cole puts over HBK at Wrestlemania, but Lawler brings up the point that it is No DQ, No countout, and says that HBK’s SCM is a showstopper. Cole picks Shawn to win, and Lawler picks Taker to win. Both provide sound reasoning. They do a good job here. That’s it for Axxess. Back to San Jose.

John Morrison vs. The Big Show

John Morrison comes out in his awesome slow-motion entrance. Morrison says he is out to introduce the man who is his tag partner, one-half of the team that will beat Show tonight and at Wrestlemania win the tag titles. R-Truth comes out and does his usual stuff, which is great. R-Truth introduces Morrison as one-half of the Future Tag Team Champions. R-Truth and Morrison get some great one-liners and jokes on Miz and the Big Show. Truth says that he will lay Show out for the 1-2-3. Morrison says they will win the titles at Mania, and that’s the truth!

Miz and Show make their way out to the ring. Show does not look happy. Commercial.

The bell rings, and Show corners Truth and chops him. Ouch. He flings R-Truth across the ring and then puts his boot on Truth’s chest in the ropes. Show with a right to the ribs. Truth gets slammed to the mat. Antoher right to the ribs, and then another. Knees to the gut, and then Show throws Truth into the ring post, shoulder-first. Truth fires back, but gets headbutted. Irish whip countered, rights by Truth, crossbody countered, fallaway slam by Show! Show to the second rope, and misses an elbow drop! Truth stops Miz from coming in, and Morrison takes down Miz! Goozle by Show, double goozle, double DDT! That draws the DQ. Show gets taken down with the Lie Detector and the Chuck Kick, and then Miz gets taken down with the Lie Detector and Starship Pain!

Winner: The Big Show via DQ-Ok for what it was. Puts over the resourcefulness of the challengers. *1/2

FINAL THOUGHTS: This was not a good show at all. At times, the announcers were off, and the fact that it kept switching back between Phoenix and San Jose really hurt the show. Not to mention that most of the show was video packages highlighting Wrestlemania, which isn’t a bad thing, but this should not be the majority of the go-home show for Wrestlemania. Thumbs down this week.
