Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDNet recapped by Michael Ornelas.
Episode 84: Butcher’s Rules

Hey everyone and welcome back to my Ring of Honor Report. Many people read and disliked my “Your News, My Views” column, and I’d just like to inform everyone that Larry told me to take the title. I didn’t approach him about that. Yes it might be a change from what you’re all used to, but I’m also still finding the format I want to use, much like it took me a few weeks to get to this. Please be patient with me as it was my first News Column. I haven’t treated a single reader here with disrespect and I expect the same in return…but this is the internet, so it may be a steep request.

Also, this week will have minimal “move-for-move” recapping as I need to turn it in ASAP since I’m going to do a stand-up comedy open mic, something I’ve started doing for fun lately. This will be my 6th, and if you’re in the Austin area (Texas), and are interested, send me an e-mail and I’ll let you know where you can find me. Enough with the self-promoting. Let’s review some RING OF HONOR!

Tonight’s show will include:

* Butcher’s Rules: Homicide vs. Necro Butcher
* Steve Corino vs. El Generico
* Jon Davis vs. Rhett Titus
* Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly vs. Grizzly Redwood and Mike Sydal
* The Debut of The Prodigy in a special interview with Jim Cornette

We open with…

Tyler Durden’s with Homicide and we get this:

That was convenient.

Corino’s in the ring. With Final Battle on the horizon, my best friend Kevin Steen has gone absolutely crazy. You’ve all seen that Kevin challenged Generico, mask vs. career, at Final Battle. And that’s the last thing I want to see. Generico was supposed to be a foot step. Steen should be champion by now. It’s taken too long. Now, I can’t even handle Kevin Steen. Generico, come on down because I have a request.

Here the masked luchador comes. Corino’s here to talk, not fight. This has gone on too long. You made Steen crazy. After 6 years of him carrying you, you made him go nuts. Be a man, don’t do this. You don’t have to do this. Is it worth risking the rest of your career for that silly little mask? I’m paraphrasing, btw. No one cares about you Generico. Just give me the mask and this’ll all be over.

Generico takes off his shirt and throws it in Corino’s face. Corino says come on. You can’t beat me. I’m not here to fight. I’ll offer one more time. Are you going to give me the mask, or not? SLAP to the face of Corino. Corino retaliates with the microphone and then throws Generico out. Beating on the outside. Throws him into the barricade. Punches and strikes. A slap to the face and so on. Generico thrown into the ring. Referee rings the bell when Corino comes in and a match has begun!

Match #1: Steve Corino vs. El Generico

Corino gets rolled into a small package. 1…..2….3!

Result: Generico via pinfall @ 0:04.
Rating: 1/4*

After the match, Generico hits a Yakuza kick in the corner, then a full nelson suplex. Another Yakuza kick and a brainbuster. Generico stands tall.

My thoughts: Short match aside, the promo was fantastic. As a whole, this segment deserves 3.5 dragons. This has been one of my favorite feuds in wrestling this year, and I’m excited to see it wrap up at Final Battle. I gave this a fourth of a star just for the excellent lead-up, but it should have been a dud most likely.

We meet “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett next!

We get a recap of the Briscoes/Kings of Wrestling w/Shane Hagadorn feud.

Cornette is in the ring and he introduces Mike Bennett. He’s accompanied to the ring by some weird guy looking like Paulie from the Rocky movies. His name is Bob Evans.

Cornette says he was heavily recruited, why did he sign with Ring of Honor? Mike says to give “Brutal” Bob. Ring of Honor is full of tomato cans for him to knock down. He sounds like a less good Ted DiBiase. He says he’ll be Ring of Honor World Champion within 12 months because he has to live up to his nickname. “You suck” chants. He says if he sucks, he wouldn’t have survived Brutal Bob’s training camp. He says he has more talent than the Rock ever did. In 2011, I’m gonna be running this place. Some other stuff (man this is pretty brutal) and he says 2011 will be the year of the Prodigy. I really don’t like being negative when I watch wrestling, but this did nothing to make me want to see this guy again. And I liked his video packages the past few weeks.

Durden’s with Daizee Haze. She’s upset that there was no winner to their match last week. Del Rey approaches and says she had her right where she wanted her. Del Rey needs competition, and Haze isn’t it. They’re both going to bring competition to one another in a women’s tag team match at Final Battle. Mystery partners!

Match #2: John Davis vs. Rhett Titus

Wow, this started abruptly! Handshake and “HepaTitus chants. Titus gets a leg choke on Davis. Gets the advantage and crawls up Davis’ back after laying on him. Creepy. Back to their feet and a slap to the face! Titus gets out of a Powerslam, runs the ropes, and tries a crossbody into a Powerslam! Big dropkick from Titus after getting back up and a 2 count. Titus with the advantage now. Head scissor choke. Davis gets out and up but runs into the boot in the corner. Titus charges but eats a leg lariat. 2 count. Big boot after a couple exchanges from Titus and a leapfrog bulldog. Titus thrusts. Running knee and both men are down. Titus is the first up. Exchange of shots. Davis in control. Big back drop to Titus. Charges him but Titus ducks and Davis goes over the top. Slingshot shoulder tackle! Titus off the second rope into a spinebuster! 2 count. POUNCES Rhett out to the floor! On his way back in, Titus gets a shot. Back in the ring and Titus hits a new move on Davis for 3 (Similar to Striker’s “Golden Rule”). Announcers didn’t give it a name. Zack Ryder used it too.

Result: Rhett Titus via pinfall @ about 7:00.
Rating: *3/4
My thoughts: Fun match but nothing special. Titus has really won me over this year as I really thought his gimmick was stupid and his moveset was limited when I first saw him wrestle.

Video package of Davey talking about Martini and Roderick. FINAL BATTLE HYPE!

Durden’s with Eddie Edwards in back to talk about the reunion of the Wolves the night before Final Battle. Everything bad that’s happened to Davey was my fault. I didn’t listen to Davey when he said that Hagadorn was a leech. This is emotional. In Plymouth, Mass, my hometown, it’s personal with the Kings of Wrestling. This is one last hunt. We’re the hunters, and this time, champs, you’re the hunted.

Match #3: Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly vs. Grizzly Redwood & Mike Sydal

We start with Cole and Redwood. A lot of flash and they exchange arm drags, then headlock takeovers, and then a stalemate. They both tag out. Mike Sydal tries stomp-stomp-clapping to get the crowd going. O’Reilly gets some nice arm submissions. He then goes to clothesline Sydal who ducks it. Dropkick! Blind tag to Redwood. Double monkey flip of O’Reilly. Sydal his a top rope moonsault onto O’Reilly to the outside! Slides him back in and Grizzly tags Mike back in. O’Reilly hits some nice striking combos and then drags Sydal to the corner and tags in Cole. Tree of woe leads to stereo dropkicks! Cole covers for 2. Sydal fights off a superplex. Jumps into Cole who the hits a Northern Lights Suplex for 2. Tag to O’Reilly. Dragon Screw leg whip. Another, but Sydal fights out. Tag to Redwood, who’s taking it to O’Reilly. Grizzly in control! Nice swinging DDT from the second rope gets 2. Tag to Sydal. Double team back drop reversed with a nice kick that hits them both. Cole blind tags and O’Reilly nails a hilo to the outside on Grizzly. Cole in control and O’Reilly joins him for a NICE Lungblower/Backstabber combination. That’s all.

Result: Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly via pinfall @ about 5:00.
Rating: **1/4
My thoughts: I REALLY like the team of Cole and O’Reilly and think they are just what the tag division needs right now. I hope they get elevated sooner than later!

Butcher comes out with Nana and Osiris. All three are emptying the ring side area of weapons and putting them all inside the ring. We have a table, chairs, a ladder, signs, I think I saw a cane.

Match #4: Butcher’s Rules: Homicide vs. Necro Butcher

As soon as the match starts, a bunch of streamers are thrown into the ring. That’s…unique. they’re fighting with chairs. Homicide throws Necro onto a chair from the apron to the outside. Beating him against the barricade. CONCHAIRTO (but with the barricade). They didn’t show it full on, but that still is sick in concept. Homicide throws the ladder from inside to Butcher on the outside. Necro’s busted open. Why’s it Butcher’s rules if he’s getting his ass kicked? Hehe. Brawling on the outside. Cide chases off Nana and Osiris. Back in the ring. Homicide drags Necro by the beard. He’s going to snapmare him into the table in the corner, but Necro reverses. Back suplex attempt, but Homicide kicks out. Vertical suplex through the table by Homicide! Fists to the head of Butcher. Homicide is setting up for the Cop Killah, but Osiris runs in! COP KILLAH ON OSIRIS and Homicide has the best smile I’ve ever seen. Runs into a chair to the midsection. Necro’s setting up chairs. Sidewalk slam on the top of two chairs!! Ouch! 1…2…Homicide kicks out! Body slam with a chair across the back onto a pile of chairs! Embassy sign by Necro. He grabs another chair while Homicide’s making his way to his feet. Cide grabs the chair from him and throws it in his face. Places a chair over his head on the ground and is going for a variation of the Conchairto. Nana interrupts but Cide punches him off the apron. Necro hits a high angle powerbomb, putting Cide neck first into some chairs. 1…..2….KICKOUT! Necro’s setting up for something else, but Homicide gets an Ace Crusher ACROSS THE BACK OF TWO CHAIRS! Nice! He follows up with a normal Ace Crusher and gets the 3!

Result: Homicide via pinfall @ 11:00.
Rating: ***
My thoughts: Really fun match. I like some hardcore action when they aren’t bleeding buckets. There was definitely blood, but it just added to the match. The story was great here. Homicide dominating so much early on that he was able to take the big moves at the end and still kick out was done really well. I liked it.

Closing thoughts: This show was average in every way. Everything that was good was counter-balanced by some below average stuff. I’m really high on the team of O’Reilly and Cole, Rhett Titus, and I got myself a good hardcore brawl, as I don’t watch much of that stuff these days. Middle of the road show, but in my eyes, all Ring of Honor is at least worth seeing!

Show rating: **1/2

I’ll catch you all next week! See you on this week’s Top 5, and then I go head to head against Hubbard in Fact or Fiction, followed by an all new Your News, My Views on Friday!
