WWE MAIN EVENT 8.14.13

– Miz and Matthews are on commentary tonight.

Alberto Del Rio vs. Cody Rhodes
This should be a fun one. They feel each other out and stare down to start. ADR hits a shoulderblock and Cody comes back with a series of kicks. ADR escapes and retreats to the corner. Stare down: Part 2. They exchange side headlocks for a moment. Cody counters out of one with a back suplex. He goes for a boot to the face but ends up in a tilt-a-whirl back breaker. ADR hits a nice modified powerslam for TWO. He locks in a headlock and Cody escapes. Cody hits an EXCELLENT springboard dropkick and takes control. Cody drops down to the mat and hits a punch to the face to dodge a back body drop. SHADES OF HIS BROTHER! Miz starts up with his absolutely GRATING commentary putting himself over and listing his accolades like he does every week. Cody hits another dropkick and sends ADR to the outside as we head to our first commercial break. So far so good. Their styles are complimenting each other very well so far. If they could get Rhodes over a bit more after his feud with Sandow, I wouldn’t mind seeing him challenge ADR for the title. That would give Sandow a great cash in moment if Rhodes won.

-Commercial Break-

We’re back from commercial as ADR picks apart the left arm of Del Rio. He assaults Rhodes on the outside by tossing him into the aprons and barricades arm first. Miz continues to put himself over. Say what you will about Alberto Del Rio but when he’s targeting a body part and aggressively attacking it, he’s VERY entertaining. Despite all of his time as a top face in Mexico, he’s far better suited as a heel in the WWE. ADR puts Rhodes in the tree of woe and kicks him hard. He goes for a suplex off of the top rope but Rhodes pushes him down to the mat. ADR gets to his feet and Rhodes hits a picture perfect moonsault for two. TWOOOOOOO. Knee to the temple by Cody. TWOOOOOO! He goes for Cross Rhodes but Del Rio counters with a nice enziguri for two. ADR goes right back to the arm. He locks in a cross arm breaker over the top rope and breaks at four. Rhodes comes back with a dropkick and only gets two. The crowd bit for that near fall. Rhodes goes for a clothesline and Del Rio ducks and hits a German suplex! He holds on to the bridge and gets two. Rhodes ducks a kick and hits Cross Rhodes! Third times a charm! He’s too beat up to crawl over for the cover though! We have a ten count, folks. Alberto grabs a handful of tights and sends Cody face first into the middle turnbuckle. He locks in the cross arm breaker! He fights to lock it in and eventually does. Cody has no choice but to tap!

Alberto Del Rio and Cody Rhodes have great chemistry. Del Rio works far better as an aggressive heel targeting a body part for the majority of the match while Cody’s ring work is way more exciting as a face. Their alignments really worked in their favor here. Besides that, the psychology around Cody’s arm and the story of Cody trying to hit the Cross Rhodes throughout the match was very well done. I’d like to see these guys tangle a few more times in the future.

OFFICIAL RESULT Alberto Del Rio @ 13:12 via submission
RATING: ***1/4

-Commercial Break-

– Brock Lesnar/CM Punk hype video. I can’t wait to see this match go down on Sunday. Lesnar/Punk and Bryan/Cena are worth the price of admission for me.

The Usos vs. 3MB (w/ Jinder Mahal)
UUUUUUUU SOOOOOOO. Jimmy starts off with Slater. Matthews and Miz joke about 3MB doing the national anthem. How fucking awesome would that be? The Usos isolate Slater with quick tags. Slater ends up fighting back with a boot to the face on the charge. In comes Drew. Jimmy Uso hits some clotheslines and a sunset flip for two. SPLASH IN THE CORNER! Drew comes back and charges at Jimmy but he gets pressed over the top rope and lands on Mahal and McIntyre. BREAK TIME~! Fun stuff so far. I’m all for 3MB getting airtime so this is a nice little gift for me.

-Commercial Break-

We’re back with Jimmy beating up Slater. He tags in Jey and they hit a double clothesline. A cover on Slater gets two. In comes McIntyre now. He corners Jey and Jimmy tags himself in behind McIntyre’s back. Mahal and Slater distract Jimmy and McIntyre gives him a huge big boot that sends him to the outside. Slater tags in now and tosses Jimmy right into the barricade. Slater rolls him in and covers him for two. Slater hits a dropkick and gets another two. Drew comes back in and tosses Jimmy into the corner. CHOPS! He tosses him into the adjacent corner and stomps a mudhole in Jimmy into the center of the ring and gets a cover for two. Slater tags in and covers Jimmy for two. He stomps him a bit and tags McIntyre back in. Good teamwork from the heels. McIntyre clubs Jimmy over the back. Jimmy hits a Samoan drop out of desperation and tries to crawl to Jey. HOT TAGS! Jey hits a few clotheslines, a kick to the abdomen, and a flying forearm. UUUU. SOOOOO. Running ass to the face! 1… 2… Drew breaks it up! Jey throws Drew to the outside and jumps over the top rope with a crossbody on to him and Mahal. Jimmy Usos hits a splash off of the top rope on Slater for the victory.

This was a fun match. 3MB plays the numbers game very well. They’ve really gotten their in ring act down when it comes to acting as a trio. There wasn’t very much substance but the match didn’t need it. They worked well together and entertained for the time allotted.

OFFICIAL RESULT: The Usos @ 8:09 via pinfall
RATING: **

-Commercial Break-

– We get a recap of the Miz TV segment with John Cena and Daniel Bryan. GREAT segment.

– Big E Langston makes his way to the ring.

-Commercial Break-

Big E Langston (w/ AJ Lee)vs. Justin Gabriel
Big E takes down Justin Gabriel and locks in a front face lock. He lifts him up and shoves him into a corner. Big E goes for a punch but Gabriel ducks and hits a dropkick. He charges at Big E in the corner but takes a military press slam down to the mat. Big E locks in the abdominal stretch and elbows him in the ribs a few times. Gabriel fights out of it with a few right hands to Langston. Big E takes him down and smashes his face into the mat. He hangs the head of Gabriel off of the apron and delivers an elbow strike to the chest. Back in the ring, Langston picks Gabriel apart with a few rights and three consecutive back breakers. Big E goes for a splash but Gabriel moves out of the way. He hits a kick to the back of the head of Big E and rolls him up for TWO. Gabriel stays in control with a couple of roundhouse kicks. He hits a splash in the corner and goes for a springboard splash. Big E catches him and goes for the Big Ending but Gabriel escapes! He hits a springboard moonsault and covers for two. Big E tries making it to his feet but gets cut off with a few blows. He locks in a a headlock but Big E powers him off. Big E pulls down the singlet straps. He means business. Big Ending. It’s over.

I’m a fan of both men but this match went a little too long for what they were trying to accomplish. It was an extended squash for Big E that dragged quite a bit. The in ring action was crisp but uninspiring.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Big E Langston @ 6:47 aired via pinfall
RATING: *1/2

OVERALL: Alberto Del Rio vs Cody Rhodes was a fun match. The rest was nothing special. Skip the broadcast and find the opener though. Thank you for reading!
