WWE Smackdown Report 8.27.13

– Vickie Guerrero is standing in the ring and she welcomes us to Smackdown. Vickie has cleared the air with Triple H since she left Monday Night Raw. With great excitement she introduces our new WWE Champion, Randy Orton. As our new WWE Champion, Randy Orton promises to give us what we want and deserve. We’re going to aspire to be him and he’ll be a role model. Role models tell the truth and that’s what he did before cashing in when we didn’t see it coming. So many people did though. Randy Orton wants to make one thing perfectly clear. He did not need Triple H’s or The Shield’s help on Raw. He asks for our support. He’s not only the WWE Champion but he’s also the face of the WWE. Here comes D-Bry!

– JBL wonders if Bryan is coming down to congratulate Orton as he Yes’s himself down the ramp. Daniel Bryan sends a short message to John Cena – “Thank you.” He thanks Cena for giving him the opportunity to wrestle him and for being courageous enough to wrestle with his injured elbow. As far as Randy Orton goes, it’s time for the face of the WWE to change. *YES CHANTS* D-Bry puts over Orton’s pretty looks. Orton is also arrogant though. He’s been handed every opportunity he’s ever had because of his bloodline. More importantly, Daniel Bryan can’t get over how pretty Randy Orton is. He’s so pretty that Daniel Bryan wants to kick him in the face. D-Bry goes over all of the hurdles he had to jump to get to where he’s at. Bryan says that he can beat Randy Orton for that title. D-Bry is entitled to a rematch for the championship and he wants it tonight. Something tells me Orton isn’t going for that. Orton tells him that he’s waiting for Night of Champions. Every single champion on the main roster is a heel right now. Been awhile since that happened. Orton goes for the RKO and D-Bry pushes him off and dropkicks him to the outside to a chorus of yes chants.

This was a very good opening segment that established both men’s agenda and created our main event at Night of Champions. Orton is falling into his new “face of WWE” role very well. Good stuff from both men.

-Commercial Break-

– Vickie Guerrero is on the phone bitching about Daniel Bryan. She wants to teach that little troll a lesson. Barrett shows up on the scene and says that they have disdain for Bryan in common. And that’s how we get our main event cage match.

Cody Rhodes vs. Curtis Axel (w/ Paul Heyman)
Face Cody sure loves to smile. Both men struggle for control to start things off. Axel gets the first big move of the match with a nice elevated dropkick. Cody comes right back with a springboard dropkick. That leads us to our first pinfall attempt of the match. Axel rolls outside and tugs Cody spine first on the apron. Now he zeros in on the lower back of Rhodes.

-Commercial Break-

We return from break with Axel in control. He misses an elbow from the top rope and Cody takes control. He misses a disaster kick but manages to roll up Axel for two. Cody goes for a moonsault but Heyman distracts him. Axel chops him in the back of the leg and finishes him off with a neck breaker.

Well that was shorter than I had expected. Cody’s losing momentum by the day but he still put in a good performance here. I’d like to see these guys get 12 minutes on Main Event.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Curtis Axel @ 4:35 via pinfall
RATING: *3/4

– Paul Heyman rips into CM Punk after the match. He says that CM Punk is in a downward spiral and that he never stood a chance against BROOOOCK LESNARRRR. He begins putting over Curtis Axel and says that nobody can defeat him for Intercontinental Championship. He hands the mic to Axel. Punk doesn’t deserve an IC Championship match. Punk is jealous of the attention Axel has been getting from Heyman according to Axel. Axel is going to finish Lesnar’s job and challenges Punk to a match on Raw. Axel’s still a little bland on the mic but he’s improving a bit.

-Commercial Break-

Big E Langston (w/ AJ Lee) vs. Dolph Ziggler
Again? Big E attacks before the match starts and the ref breaks it up. He pummels Ziggler down as soon as the bell rings. He hits a splash and gets a near fall. Ziggler is still selling injuries from his handicap match against Shield on Monday. Ziggler sidesteps a tackle attempt and Big E goes shoulder first into the ring post. Ziggler follows up with a swinging neck breaker and a dropkick. Big catches him on a fameasser attempt and goes for a powerbomb. Ziggler escapes with a facebuster. TWO. AJ punches Ziggler in the face when the ref was distracted. Big E mauls him and gets another two count. Ziggler escapes the Big Ending and hits the Zig Zag for the win.

This was a super short match. It seems pretty obvious that both guys have no direction right now and got thrown into another match with each other to get them on the card. This didn’t do too much for either man but it was fun for the two minutes it lasted.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Dolph Ziggler @ 2:11 via pinfall
RATING: N/R

-Commercial Break-

Christian vs. Alberto Del Rio
AGAIN? Lots of rematches tonight. They go back and forth to start exchanging arm bars. They quickly find themselves outside of the ring. They brawl for a bit, using the barricade to their advantage. Christian rolls ADR back in and ADR rolls right back to the outside. Alberto needs a breather and begins making his way up the ramp as we head to break.

-Commercial Break-

Del Rio is in control as we return from break. Christian hits a right hand and goes for the tornado DDT off the top rope but ADR shoves him to the outside of the ring. Christian took a pretty nasty bump there. Back to the outside, ADR is pummeling Christian. He rolls him in the ring and gets two. They exchange punches. Alberto escapes the Killswitch and hits the backstabber for two. He stays on Christian and chokes him up on the middle rope. Alberto runs at him and tries choking him but Christian moves out of the way and slingshots ADR’s neck off of the top rope. ADR makes it back in the ring and eats some fists and clotheslines. Christian goes for the ten count punches. ADR shoves him off at six but ends up getting back body dropped. Christian goes for a crossbody from the top and ADR sidesteps it. He follows up with a kick to the head for two. He misses an enziguri and Christian gets a near fall off of a sunset flip. Christian misses a dropkick and gets caught in the cross arm breaker. He quickly escapes and hits the tornado DDT on second attempt. TWO. Christian goes upstairs but eats an enziguri. That’s a two count. Christian goes for a killswitch but ADR escapes and sends him into the ring post. He applies the cross arm breaker from the top rope and rolls into it. Christian has to tap.

I don’t know if these guys can have a bad match. Great psychology, great pace, and great timing.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Alberto Del Rio @ 9:56 via submission
RATING: ***1/4

– ADR cuts a post match promo about how nobody can be the next Alberto Del Rio because we’re all peasants. Ricardo interrupts. ADR said to follow him to greatness and Ricardo isn’t feeling that. He introduces his new protege, RVD. Huge pop/ They make their way towards the ring. ADR is distracted and Christian hits a missile dropkick from the top rope before exiting. RVD hits the rolling thunder and Del Rio gets out of there.

-Commercial Break-

Handicap Match: Big Show and Mark Henry vs. 3MB
After a game of rock paper scissors, Slater enters first against Big Show. Some chops and a tag to Henry ensue. Slater’s offense has no effect on Henry. Henry tosses him around the ring like a rag doll. Mahal and Slater manage to double team Mark and get him down. The heels quick tag in and out and deliver a pummeling. Big Show gets in there and cleans house. Big Show chokeslams McIntyre but Slater breaks it up. Slater eats a World’s Strongest Slam and Show hits him with the KO Punch.

This was a fun squash match. 3MB are perfect for matches like this.

OFFICIAL RESULT Big Show and Mark Henry @ 2:50 via pinfall
RATING: SQUASH

– The Shield pop up on the Tron and say that they’ll never respect Big Show and Mark Henry. Rollins calls them the most imposing team in WWE history. At the end of the day, The Shield are just better than them.

– The PTPs are walking. They bust out their millions of dollars dance during their stroll.

-Commercial Break-

Darren Young (w/ Titus O’Neil) vs. Antonio Cesaro (w/ Jack Swagger)
Cesaro dominates out of the gate. He quickly delivers a gut wrench suplex to Young fights back and hits the Northern Lights into a bridge for two. Things break down on the outside. Young hits Cesaro with a gut buster for the victory.

Another short match in a night full of them. D-Young picks up the singles victory but the crowd doesn’t seem too interested in it.

OFFICIAL RESULT Darren Young @ 2:15 via pin fall
RATING: N/A

-Commercial Break-

– Some dude asks Ryback for an autograph for his kid. The guy doesn’t know who Ryback is and asks for his name. Ryback gets offended and rips it up. Meh, that guy was being a douche anyway.

-Commercial Break-

Cage Match: Daniel Bryan vs. Wade Barrett
They brawl to start things off. Barrett tries sending him into the cage to no avail. Bryan sends him into the corner and delivers yes kicks. He steps on the second rope and punches Barrett. Barrett shoves him off and hits a big boot. Barrett pummels him for a bit with right hands. Barrett puts him over his shoulder and rams him into the cage. Bryan fights back with yes punches/kicks. He hits the ropes but falls victim to the Winds of Change. TWO.

-Commercial Break-

Barrett big boots Bryan’s skull into the cage and gets a near fall. D-Bry battles back and shoves Barrett into the cage over and over. YES SHOVES. He follows up with three dropkicks to Barrett into the cage. D-Bry goes for an escape but Barrett clubs him in the back. D-Bry kicks him off and hits a dropkick from the top rope. TWO. Bryan hits some yes kicks and Barrett ducks the last one and sends him into the cage. He goes for Wasteland but D-Bry gets out of it and tries for the escape. Barrett grabs him and plants him with an electric chair drop. Barrett goes for the escape now. D-Bry catches up with him and goes for a German off the top. Barrett connects with some elbows and that sends Bryan to the floor. Barrett continues on his journey to escape. Bryan catches up with him though. Bryan sends him face first into the cage and sunset powerbombs him. Both men are down. Bryan makes it to his feet and hits a huge dropkick! He covers him and picks up the win!

Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett delivered a great cage match. There wasn’t a dull moment as both men get better with every match against one another.

OFFICIAL RESULT Daniel Bryan @ 10:10 aired via pinfall
RATING: ***

– Randy Orton hits Daniel Bryan with an RKO after the match. He holds the title high. End Scene.

OVERALL: We had two fun main events and a bunch of short filler in between. Checkout the ADR/Christian and D-Bry/Barrett. The rest is passable.
