The Name on the Marquee: Smoky Mountain Wrestling (10.28.1995)

-We start right off by announcing that Terry Gordy is the new SMW Champion and we’ll see why shortly.

-Your hosts are Chip Kessler & Les Thatcher.

HEAVENLY BODIES (Tag Team Champions, with General Cornette) vs. WOLFMAN & COMET CHRIS MICHAELS
-Bodies attack from behind at the bell as we’re reminded that tonight is the night that the Heavenly Bodies square off against the Thugs in that big double chain match. Don’t forget that Robert Gibson is the guest referee.

-Pritchard puts the boots to Wolfman and demands that he show a little more offense in the spirit of Halloween. Hard chop by Pritchard followed by an elbow. The Bodies double-team the Wolfman. Michaels is finally able to tag in and handles both Bodies on his own rather well, but Pritchard sneaks in and kicks him in the back with his dreaded silver boot, and that’s enough for Del Ray to get the pin.

-We look back at highlights of last week’s Robert Gibson/Mosh match.

-General Cornette is tired of all the food-stampers in the crowd throwing pointless opinions out when he’s trying to talk. No matter—tonight, the Thugs will see once and for all who the masters of the chain really are. And Corny assures us once again that Sgt. Rock is on his way to Smoky Mountain Wrestling and the Thugs’ shenanigans are going to come to a halt once he reveals himself.

-We take a look back at the impromptu Smoky Mountain Title match from last week, with Brad Armstrong facing off against Terry Gordy. Armstrong gets the pin clean as a sheet after a Russian legsweep.

-We go to highlights of a house show from a few days later, with Armstrong defending the belt against Thrasher, Terry Gordy, and Wolfman in four-way action. Armstrong is on the receiving end of a lot of double-teaming and a pier sixer breaks loose. Mosh sneaks in and attacks Brad Armstrong from the top rope, and Gordy capitalizes to get the three count and capture the gold.

-Terry Gordy calls Brad Armstrong a dirty, egg-sucking, perverted dog while gloating and reviling in his big victory. Corny promises that Terry Gordy will carry Smoky Mountain Wrestling into the 21st Century. Damn, he couldn’t have been more off with that.

-Brad Armstrong wants the gold back, and look out Johnson City, because he’s on his way and he wants his gold back!

We get a commercial for Power Maker II, the anabolic training supplement used by the top stars of Smoky Mountain Wrestling. The Wolfman has gained 70 pounds and now wrestles on TV, thanks to Power Maker II…Oh, I get it, it’s basically IcoPro, except it’s made in a bathtub, I guess.

BRAD ARMSTRONG vs. LARRY SANTO
-Santo Attacks at the bell and goes to town with chops and forearms. Armstrong makes a comeback with a dropkick and a forearm to the gut. Russian legsweep gets an easy three.

-We take a look at the vest-based hatred between Tommy Rich & Buddy Landell. That leads to highlights of a chain match between the two from earlier this week. Buddy Landell nearly wins, but distraction by Jim Cornette and interference by the Punisher prevents him from getting to the all important fourth turnbuckle.

-Rich then gets three turnbuckles touched and Landell blocks him from touching the fourth turnbuckle by yanking him into the middle of the ring, and then does the stupidest thing imaginable and goes on the offensive by shoving him into the corner…so Rich touches the fourth turnbuckle and wins. Post-match, Landell gets mauled by Corny, the Punisher, and Tommy Rich.

-Tommy Rich & the General boast that Buddy Landell is on the verge of being knocked out of wrestling for good, and the upcoming barbed wire match will be the end of the line for him.

KESSLER’S CORNER
-Chip talks to Buddy Landell, who has a huge gift box from “the fans of Smoky Mountain Wrestling” (what, all of them? Did they take a collection?) and he starts to open it, but along comes General Cornette and his militia, and Buddy wants no trouble, so he backs off. Corny opens the gift box, and it’s…some dude. And he beats the shit out of Jim Cornette and then books it out of the arena. The crowd goes crazy while Jim frantically yells, “What was THAT?!”

-Back from commercial, Landell introduces his “gift,” Butch Cassidy. He still needs one more partner to keep up with Cornette’s militia. He doesn’t have many friends due to all of his evil deeds over the years, but he has a partner in mind. He said “no” when Buddy called him last week, but Buddy called him again, and this time, he said “maybe.” So be careful.

-The Thugs are ready for the Heavenly Bodies, and they know guest referee Robert Gibson will take care of Jim Cornette. The Bodies and Corny show up to make trouble, and a brawl breaks out on the spot.

DIRTY WHITE BOY (with Tracy Smothers) vs. DR. TOM PRITCHARD (with General Cornette & Jimmy Del Ray)
-Pritchard gets the advantage with a little well-timed help from his cornermen. Whitey comes back with a suplex and an elbow. The referee gets KOed in all the zaniness, but when the White Boy hits a belly-to-back suplex and goes for the pin, Robert Gibson slides and makes the three-count.

-Corny tearfully grumbles about Gibson and his shenanigans in the ring. The Thugs think they got away with it, but guess what! Sgt. Rock is on his way, and this kind of stuff is going to stop once the Sarge gets here. Corny’s promo is interrupted by Butch Cassidy chasing him into the ring and beating the crap out of Cornette. The Punisher runs in and tries to attack Cassidy, but Buddy Landell comes to the rescue.

-End of show and to Game Show Utopia.

The 411: Corny's asskicking was a surprisingly fun angle to prop up an otherwise average week.
