BG Says: SHIMMER Women Athletes – Volume 7

Volume 7

Commentary is being provided by Dave Prazak & Allison Danger.

Two weeks ago Daizee Haze challenged Rebecca Knox to an iron woman match. Knox accepted but has since been injured. She banged up her head in Germany and is out of action for an indefinite amount of time. Personally I thought a 60-minute iron woman match was a little premature considering nothing would be on the line and it’s pretty early in the Knox/Haze feud so I’m not too broken up about it.

Tiana Ringer VS. Lorelei Lee
Ringer’s entrance and ring gear are very provocative. She and Lee trade holds to start. Lee gets a crucifix pin for 2. She gets another roll up for 2. Ringer’s incredibly short shorts are very distracting. Ringer hits a big boot and pounds away. She hits an elbowdrop for 2. She hits another elbowdrop for 2. She works Lee over in the corner and slams her to the mat for 2. She puts on a chinlock and slams Lee to the mat by her hair for 2. Lee ducks a kick and hits a handspring forearm for 2. She hits a pair of clotheslines but Ringer comes back with the South Palm Beach Driver for the win at 5:31. I’m just a man and thus spend most of the match preoccupied with Ringer’s… never mind. The match was pretty loose anyway.

Daizee Haze is going to push herself just as hard tonight as she would have had she been wrestling in an iron woman match. She challenges Cheerleader Melissa to help her do that pushing.

Cindy Rogers VS. Ariel
These two are usually on the same side of the ring. Rogers grabs a headlock but Ariel counters to one of her own. They fight to the mat where Rogers puts on a deathlock. Ariel gets to the ropes. A test of strength goes Ariel’s way and she puts on an armbar. Rogers grabs a cravat but Ariel fights out. Ariel hits a hiptoss and an armdrag. She hits a dropkick for 2. Rogers comes back with a clothesline and a vertical suplex for 2. She snaps at Ariel’s neck for 2. Ariel hits a basement dropkick for 2. Rogers tosses Ariel across the ring by her neck for 2. They grab each other’s hair and land face-first on the mat. Rogers hits a bulldog on her knee for 2. Ariel hits a northern lights suplex for 2. Rogers hits the X-Factor for 2. Ariel comes back with the Dariel for the win at 8:41. The match itself was nothing inspiring, but after the match Rogers refuses to shake Ariel’s hand and walks to the back in a huff.

Lacey heard about Nikki Roxx putting out open contracts to pick up big wins and climb the card. Lacey considers herself a main event player and although she hasn’t really heard of Roxx she’s going to answer the open contract as a warm up.

Malia HosakaLexie Fyfe VS. Portia PerezSerena Deeb
Deeb and Perez have just about the worst entrance music I’ve ever heard. I think it’s a Gwen Stefani song and it hurts. Hosaka and Fyfe freak out when the ring announcer accidentally overestimates their weight. Deeb hits a pair of armdrags on Hosaka at the bell. She puts on an armbar but Hosaka gets to the ropes. Hosaka puts on a headlock and then switches to a wristlock. Deeb puts her armbar back on and tags to Perez. Hosaka puts on an armbar and rams Perez into Fyfe’s boot. She goes to the eyes and hits a leaping double chop. She chokes Perez in the corner and makes a switch with Fyfe. Fyfe hits the laziest clothesline I’ve ever seen for 2. Hosaka tags in and catches Perez on a crossbody attempt. Deeb runs in and dropkicks them down for 2. Fyfe puts a chinlock on Perez but Perez hits a chinlock to escape. Deeb tags in and cleans house. Hosaka and Fyfe regroup on the floor so Deeb slingshots Hosaka back in. Perez tags in and hits a leg lariat. She hits business exposing a bodyslam for 2. Everyone brawls until Hosaka and Fyfe hit the double facebuster on Perez for the win at 7:00. This was more like people acting out a wrestling match than actually wrestling a match.

Cheerleader Melissa has always known she’d face Daizee Haze at some point in SHIMMER, so it might as well be tonight. She really couldn’t think of anything less status quo to say?

MsChif VS. Rain
They lock up and Rain powers MsChif to the corner before hitting a cheap shot. MsChif fires back with forearms and hits a vertical suplex for 2. She gets a roll up for 2. She gets a backslide for 2. She puts on an inverted Mutalock but Rain gets to the ropes. Rain hits a bulldog for 2. She hits a back elbow for 2. MsChif goes for the body scissors but Rain counters to a modified Boston crab. MsChif gets to the ropes. She hits a discus forearm and a standing moonsault but her ribs are too damaged to go for a pin. Rain hits a dropkick for 2. She stomps all over MsChif’s ribs for 2. MsChif gets a sunset flip for 2. Things completely break down as Rain no sells a clothesline that may or may not have hit and then awkwardly puts on an abdominal stretch. MsChif hits an ugly chinbreaker to escape. MsChif unloads with chops and hits a clothesline. She hits another clothesline and a drop toehold into the turnbuckle. She hits a series of double stomps as Cheerleader Melissa comes out to ringside. MsChif gets distracted and Rain hits an inverted lungblower for 2. MsChif comes back with the Roll of the Dice for 2. Lacey runs over Melissa on her way to the ring to distract the referee. She tosses Rain a foreign object but the referee catches her using it and calls for the disqualification at 8:29. Rain just doesn’t look comfortable in the ring and MsChif didn’t pull her weight in this match either. A bad finish didn’t help matters.

After the match Melissa shouts at the Minnesota Home Wrecking Crew, completely ignoring her nemesis MsChif.

Nattie Neidhart is the first ever third generation female wrestler ever. Tonight she faces Sara Del Ray who is undefeated in singles competition in SHIMMER. She goes through a bunch of silly cliché threats and just generally seems to be having fun with this promo. The Neidhart laugh is in full effect!

Danger leaves the commentary booth for her match and is replaced by Daffney.

Amber O'Neal VS. Allison Danger
O’Neal cracks me up when she makes fun of Danger’s ridiculous Low Ki posing. She puts on an armbar but gets rolled up by Danger for 2. O’Neal puts on a headlock but Danger counters to a wristlock. O’Neal gets an armbar an gets a roll up for 2. She gets a backslide for 2. Danger gets a roll up for 2. She trips O’Neal up for 2. O’Neal returns the favor for 2. They trade chops so that Danger can prove that she’s the Roderick Strong of SHIMMER. O’Neal slaps Danger so Danger returns fire with forearms galore. She scrapes her boot across O’Neal’s face, firing up because she thinks she’s so pretty. She relentlessly attacks Danger’s knee in retaliation. She rams the knee into the apron but Danger comes back with a baseball slide. Back in the ring O’Neal kicks out Danger’s knee and ties it up in the ropes. She puts on a leglock as Daffney talks about possibly managing someone in the company. O’Neal puts on a half crab but Danger gets to the ropes. Danger sneaks in an enziguiri but her leg is too hurt to capitalize. She hits a neckbreaker on the knee but the hesitation due to the pain causes her to only get 2. She hits five rolling vertical suplexes for 2. O’Neal goes for a shinbreaker but her back is too hurt to lift Danger. She hits a neckbreaker instead and it gets 2. They trade forearms and Danger gets a roll up for 2. She clumsily rolls into the STF and O’Neal taps out at 12:20. The story of the match was a lot of fun; O’Neal was only a threat when she was full of rage out of worry for her looks. Danger’s finisher uses the knee so attacking it increased her slim odds of winning. Like her Japanese mentors Danger stopped selling shortly after getting back on offense. It was O’Neal who shined here, selling the back after Danger’s relentless suplexes and proving that she’s more than just the diva she claims to be.
Rating: **¾

Lacey VS. Nikki Roxx
The crowd works a really clever “Nikki Roxx, Lacey sucks,” chant in. They lock up and Roxx grabs a wristlock. Lacey counters to a hammerlock and they go to the mat. Lacey gets a takedown and puts on a headlock. Danger returns to commentary and gives O’Neal credit for the fight she brought. Lacey puts on a wristlock and bites Roxx’s hand. They fight over a headlock and Roxx hits a clotheslines. She hits a back elbow and a Samoan drop. Lacey bails so Roxx chases her around the ring. Back inside Lacey misses an elbowdrop and Roxx puts on an armbar. Lacey hits a bulldog for 2. She slams Roxx’s head against the mat and hits a double kneestrike in the corner. Roxx dodges a second attempt and hits a dropkick. Lacey hits a clothesline to the back and a neckbreaker for 2. She starts working over the neck and hits a spin kick for 2. She puts on a stranglehold and then hits a back suplex for 2. Roxx misses a dropkick and Lacey pins her for 2. Roxx counters the implant DDT to a roll up for 2. Lacey hits a neckbreaker and puts on a butterfly hold. Roxx hits a northern lights suplex to escape and gets 2. They trade strikes and Roxx hits a clothesline. She hits a dropkick and a suplex for 2. Lacey blocks the Barbie Crusher and hits a lung blower for 2. She hits a cobra clutch backbreaker for 2. Roxx hits a chinbreaker and the Barbie Crusher for the win at 14:59. The finish felt tacked on but aside from that this match had consistent action and a good story. The angle that has Roxx fighting better wrestlers and holding her own (and in this case beating them) is a great one, but the finish here felt too matter of fact.
Rating: ***

Mercedes Martinez VS. LuFisto
I was really impressed with LuFisto’s AAW match on the last DVD. They trade holds and fight on the mat to start. They dodge each other’s strikes and Martinez puts on a wristlock. Things get intense as neither woman can overpower the other. They knuckle up and LuFisto hits an armdrag. Martinez hits a dropkick and a low powerslam for 2. She puts on a chinlock and ties LuFisto in a knot. LuFisto comes back with a leg lariat and a Michinoku Driver. She puts on the Mark Nulty Special and turns over into the Skull Fucker. Martinez hits a back elbow and a boot to the stomach for 2. She hits a delayed vertical suplex for 2. She puts on the Regal Stretch but LuFisto gets to the ropes. Martinez unloads with forearms but LuFisto comes back with a northern lights suplex for 2. She hits a double stomp to the back and puts on a Mutalock. She switches to a camel clutch and lays in the crossface forearms. Martinez hits a spinebuster for 2. She hits a powerbomb for 2. She hits a knee in the corner for 2. LuFisto dodges a blind charge and hits a running boot in the corner. She climbs the ropes but misses a diving headbutt. Martinez hits a German suplex and a powerslam for 2. LuFisto hits a DVD for 2. Martinez comes back with the fisherman buster for the win at 13:04. The match was stiff but it felt like a rather disjointed strong style affair. Still, not bad overall and they get points for dishing out all that punishment.
Rating: **¾

Sara Del Rey VS. Nattie Neidhart
Neidhart gets a headlock to start. Del Ray comes back with an armbar but Neidhart keeps up the pace by countering to her own holds. She rolls Del Ray into a cross armbreaker but Sara gets to the ropes. Neidhart puts on a leglock and the chain wrestling continues. They trade strikes and Del Ray puts Neidhart down. She puts on a headlock and hits an extremely telegraphed armdrag into a roll up for 2. Neidhart hits a knee to the gut and chokes Del Ray in the ropes. They slug it out and Neidhart goes for the cross armbreaker. Del Ray gets to the ropes. Neidhart goes to work on the leg but gets caught with a roll up off of a blind charge. She comes back with a hair slam and goes back to the leg. She hits a snap suplex for 2. She kicks the back for 2. She starts mimicking her father in an ode to Jim. She puts on a spinning toe hold but Del Ray fights out. Neidhart slams the leg to the mat but Del Ray comes back with slaps. Neidhart slugs her down for 2. Del Ray counters a bodyslam to a roll up for 2. Neidhart strikes her down for 2. She puts on a chinlock but Del Ray escapes and hits a dropkick. Neidhart hits a clothesline against the ropes and goes for the Sharpshooter. Del Ray blocks it and puts on a crossface. Neidhart gets to the ropes. Del Ray gets a much telegraphed sunset flip for 2. She hits a big boot to the gut. She hits another and a northern lights suplex for 2. She goes for more boots but Neidhart blocks them and hits a discus lariat for 2. She puts on the Sharpshooter but Del Ray rolls her up for 2. Neidhart gets the Sharpshooter back on but Del Ray kicks her away. Neidhart hits a German suplex for 2. Del Ray comes back with a very unique roll up for 2. She puts on a Sharpshooter of her own but Neidhart powers out. They both go for clotheslines until Del Ray counters one to a butterfly powerslam for the win at 18:46. A few flaws aside this was a crisp, stiff and well executed match. The action down the stretch focusing on the Sharpshooter was excellent.
Rating: ***¼

After the match Mercedes Martinez challenges Sara Del Ray to a match on Volume 8. She doesn’t give Del Ray much room to turn down the challenge so I guess it’s safe to assume we have a match.

Cheerleader Melissa VS. Daizee Haze
Haze dances for the fans to start. Melissa overpowers her and hits a nasty STO. Haze puts on a wristlock but Melissa kicks out of it. She puts on an aggressive armbar and goes for a cross armbreaker. Haze gets to the ropes. Melissa gets a roll up for 2. They fight over holds and takedowns until Haze comes up with a leglock. She gets a headlock takedown and rolls Melissa up for 2. She puts on a butterfly lock but Melissa counters to a roll up for 2. She lays in some hard forearms and then hits Haze with a snap suplex for 2. Haze counters a back suplex to another headlock takedown. She skillfully keeps the hold on through multiple attempts by Melissa to escape. She hits a hurricanrana and Melissa bails. Haze follows her out with a dive from the top. Melissa returns fire by viciously and repeatedly swinging Haze into the barricade. That’s honestly one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen in wrestling. For the life of me I can’t understand why they’d want to turn Melissa babyface (as they seem to be doing) when she does vile stuff like that. She bends Haze’s back over the top of the barricade and gets 2 back in the ring. She hits a series of elbowdrops but Haze comes back with a sunset flip for 2. They trade roll ups and Melissa hits a Samoan drop for 2. She hangs Haze in the Tree of Woe and props her head above the bottom turnbuckle. She puts her on a Tree of Woe crab until the referee calls for the break. She works over Haze’s leg and then puts on a chinlock. Well that feels out of place. Melissa hits a bodyslam but Haze comes back with a missile dropkick. She hits a facebuster and they trade chops. Haze hits a running forearm and gets a roll up for 2. She gets another for 2. She puts on a crucifix hold and rolls Melissa up again for 2. She gets a jackknife pin for 2. Melissa goes for the Kudo Driver but Haze blocks it. Melissa counters the heart punch to the Air Raid Crash for 2 when Haze grabs the bottom rope. Haze gets the ugliest roll up I’ve ever seen for 2. Melissa counters another heart punch to an axe kick for 2. Haze counters the Kudo Driver to the heart punch but Melissa counters the Mind Trip to the Kudo Driver for the win at 22:00. Melissa was relentless in this match, making up for Haze’s sloppy work.
Rating: ***¼

After the match the Lacey and Rain come out and jump Melissa. They beat her down until MsChif makes the save. Lacey challenges both of them to a tag match on Volume 8. I really don’t care for the feuding partners angle.

The 411BG Says

With Rebecca Knox out of action for a while I really see no need for SHIMMER to keep pushing Haze as a main eventer. She’s been sloppy whenever she’s paired with someone not named Lacey or Rebecca Knox and in all of her ROH appearances. My only other complaint is the possible Melissa face turn. Here’s hoping the MsChif/Melissa team lasts as long as the Del Ray/Martinez team did. That aside this was a very solid show. The undercard is still struggling but everything from the midcard up clocked in at **¾ and up on this DVD. This one gets a mild recommendation for the good matches that made up the second half of the DVD and the great performances, in ring or otherwise, by O’Neal, Roxx and Melissa. You can pick this up at ROHWrestling.com.
