CHIKARA Review: The Global Gauntlet, Night II

Philadelphia, PA – 10.19.2008

Following up quite the evening of mayhem in The Global Gauntlet: Night One, CHIKARA returns to the New Alhambra with The Global Gauntlet: Night Two. Tonight’s main event features seven of CHIKARA’s top competitors taking on seven of the top competitors from Big Japan Wrestling in a gauntlet style match. CHIKARA lost the Best of 5 series to Big Japan last night in Easton, PA. Will CHIKARA recover from this loss and take home the Global Gauntlet, or will Big Japan come out on top again? In addition, after winning three points just the night before, the Osirian Portal cashes in their shot at the Campeonatos de Parejas tonight against the campeones, the Super Smash Bros. Will the Osirian Portal win the belts and keep their hot streak alive, or will the Super Smash Bros. prove to be a worthy commodity in their first defense of the belts? All this and much more will be answered tonight, so let’s not waste any more time.

Commentary is provided by Mike Quackenbush, Leonard F. Chikarason, Eddie Kingston, Louden Noxious, and Ultramantis Black.

The Sea Donsters (Hydra & Tim Donst) vs. The UnStable (STIGMA & Colin Delaney)

Hydra and Colin start off. Hydra takes down Colin with a drop toe hold. He spins around on Colin, brings him up, and tags in Donst. The Donsters hit a double shoulder block on Colin, then run around him Steiner Bros. style. They begin to play the air guitar and air drum, till STIGMA comes in and tosses Hydra out. Donst rolls up STIGMA for the two count. Donst takes down STIGMA and slaps him across the face. STIGMA runs at Donst, but Donst dips the rope and STIGMA hits the floor. Donst jumps to the floor onto STIGMA. Hydra comes in and delivers a series of chops to Colin’s head. He applies a hand lock, but it has no effect. Hydra grabs Colin’s fist, puts it on the mat, and steps on it. Colin misses a chop in the corner. Hydra takes the hurt hand and chops it multiple times. Colin kicks Hydra in the gut and pounds him on the mat. Hydra reverses a hip toss to an arm drag. Hydra ducks a clothesline and sends Colin to the outside with the satellite headscissors. Hydra looks to dive to the outside, but STIGMA drills Hydra in the head with a boot. STIGMA rolls up Hydra for the two count. The UnStable cuts the ring in half, and bully Hydra around. Hydra escapes the pounding, by reversing one of STIGMA’s cradles into an accidental dropkick from Colin Delaney. While Colin aids his partner whom he just hit, Hydra rolls to his corner and tags in Donst. Tim takes both men down fireman’s carries. He takes out Delaney with an elbow, and crotches STIGMA on the middle rope. Donst turns around into a spinebuster by Donst. Colin follows up with an attempt at the People’s Elbow, but while Colin is dancing about, Donst hos up and takes him down with an STO. Donst also sets up the People’s Elbow, but headbutts Delaney in the ribs instead. Donst and STIGMA get into a chop battle. STIGMA jumps off the second rope with a knee strike to Donst’s neck. STIGMA goes for the pin but Hydra tags in. Hydra takes down both UnStable members, flap jacking Colin onto STIGMA. Hydra goes for the Hydralock on Colin with Donst tries the Donstitution on STIGMA. The UnStable works their way out of the moves, and pushes The Sea Donsters into one another. STIGMA dumps Donst to the outside. STIGMA nails Hydra with the Tombstone Piledriver! Delaney dives onto Donst to prevent him from breaking up the pin, which STIGMA gets, giving the UnStable their first point! This was awesome. It established both teams as forces to be reckoned with. It was very entertaining and set up the UnStable as a team to watch. **3/4

Vin Gerard comes in from the back and grabs the microphone. Vin says he knows Jigsaw is in the crowd, and points him out. Vin says he thinks he and Jigsaw got off on the wrong foot at Syle & Substance, and asks for Jigsaw to get in the ring. Jigsaw obliges. Colin holds the ropes for Jigsaw, but he goes through a different side. Long story short, Vin tells Jigsaw that nobody wants him around, they have a lot in common, and that he should join the UnStable. Jigsaw superkicks STIGMA, causing Vin and Colin to beat him down. Mike Quackenbush runs in with a chair to make the save. The UnStable bails before he can hit any of them. Jigsaw goes for a handshake, but Quack just says “Now we’re even” and heads to the back. Jigsaw looks to go backstage, but Chikarason comes out and says he and Jigsaw have to go to his office and talk before Jigsaw is allowed to the back.

Lince Dorado vs. Icarus

Lince says he is happy because he and his partner Jimmy Olsen accrued three points last night. He says that Icarus being a former Campeon de Parejas, beating him would be a good start. He lets out a loud POUNCE! before leaving.

Lince comes out to the ring on a Razor Scooter! Icarus pulls a scooter of his own out from under the ring and challenges him to a race. Icarus chops Lince to get the head start, but Lince defeats him soundly. Lince hits the ring and the bell sounds.

Each man exchange holds until Lince sends Icarus to the corner. They lock up and Lince applies a headlock. Icarus chops Lince’s back. He goes for a back drop, but Lince lands on his feet and reapplies the headlock. Icarus pushes Lince to the corner. Icarus runs up the ropes, pops Icarus off the ropes, and hits an alita. Lince grabs Icarus’ arm and walks across the top rope. He nails a springboard whoopee cushion on Icarus. Lince hits the ropes. Icarus pulls down the opposite top rope, causing Lince to splat stomach first on the floor. Icarus hits a baseball slide and chokes Lince on the guardrail. Icarus tosses Lince back in the ring and pins him for the two. Icarus hits a suplex and rolls into a butterfly lock. Icarus goes for the Pedigree, but turns it into a back breaker. Icarus applies a camel clutch. Icarus cracks Lince with a dropkick and pins him, but Lince gets his foot on the ropes. Lince slaps Icarus till Icarus blasts him with a forearm. Icarus again chokes Lince on the ropes. Icarus delivers a series of chops and kicks on the ropes. Lince ducks a whip to the ropes and hits a pump handle slam on Icarus. Lince double stomps Icarus in the corner. Lince hits a springboard elbow off the second rope. He goes for a moonsault and misses. Icarus turns Lince inside out with a lariat! Icarus sets up for the Blu-Ray Death Valley Driver, and lands it right in the corner! Icarus goes for the pin and only gets two! Lince makes it to his feet and hits an Enzugiri. Icarus rolls to the apron. Lince comes over, but Icarus drapes him on the ropes. Icarus goes for the Shiranui. Lince turns it into the flipping Urignagi! Lince follows up with the Shooting Star Press for the win. This was really great. This may have been the best singles match I have seen Lince Dorado in. Icarus looked more fierce than ever and came with his A game. Lince also looked great, and was a good way to get him over as a legitimate competitor his Campeonatos de Parejas shot. A lot better than most anyone would expect. ***

Incoherence (Delirious & Hallowicked) vs. The Order of the Neo-Solar Temple (Ultramantis Black & Crossbones)

Ultramantis tells Crossbones that they face a true challenge in Incoherence. Ultramantis says he and Hallowicked have unresolved issues from years ago. Mantis says tonight he will put the final nail in Hallowicked’s coffin. Crossbones adds that if they win tonight, they get their third point and win the titles. Crossbones has a pumpkin for the Halloween spirit, and Mantis says he has a delicious pumpkin soup recipe for later.

The Order beats up the pumpkin in the ring saying that is what they will do to Hallowicked.

Delirious and Mantis start off. Delirious rings the arm of Mantis. Delirious brings Mantis to his side, and puts his knee on Mantis’ arm. Delirious continues to work over the arm, mainly twisting on his shoulder. Delirious tags in Hallowicked who also works over Mantis’ arm. Mantis forearms Hallowicked in the face and tags in Crossbones. They go back and forth with Wicked taking Crossbones over with a wheelbarrow arm drag. Crossbones tries his best to power through on a couple occasions, but Hallowicked maintains the advantage sending Crossbones to the floor. Mantis comes in and exchanges forearms with Hallowicked. Mantis chops Hallowicked into the corner. He sends Wicked to the buckle, but Wicked counters and hits somce chops of his own. Mantis blocks Hallowicked’s toss off the ropes. He sends Wicked to the ropes, who sends Mantis out of the ring with a step up frankensteiner. Crossbones comes in. Hallowicked takes him down with a bulldog and sends him to the corner. Incoherence makes frequent in and out tags, hitting a single blow on each tag. Delirious goes for the pin after a senton but only gets the two count. Delirious hits the ropes, but is caught by Mantis’ boot. Mantis and Crossbones isolate Delirious in their corner and dish out quite a bit of punishment. Delirious evaded a splash by Crossbones and went to tag in Wicked, but was quickly cut off by the Neo-Solar Temple. Delirious almost jumped over Crossbones to tag in Wicked, but unfortunately for him, Crossbones was able to slam him down before such a tag could be made. Wicked broke up a pin after the Temple hit a double Urinagi on Delirious. Delirious muscled Crossbones over and almost had a tag, but Mantis was able to stop him. The Sea Donsters make their way ringside, leaving Mantis distracted. Delirious takes down Crossbones in the corner and nails a Panic Attack. Hallowicked nails him with two big Yakuza Kicks! Mantis goes up the ramp chasing the Donsters and Delirious hits the Shadows Over Hell! Delirious gets the pin, and Incoherence picks up their first point! This was very poetic, as the Donsters cost the Temple their third point, much like the Temple cost the Donsters their match for the Campeonatos de Parejas. I dug this match; very good stuff from both teams and it told a very good story. **3/4

Jimmy Olsen can play mind games too

On the Podcast, Jimmy cut a promo saying that Vin Gerard screwed with his head when Vin told him that Colin was under a mask somewhere in CHIKARA. Jimmy said he was so distraught by his brother’s absence at that point that he was willing to believe anything. Jimmy says Vin made a fool out of him, and he will do the same to Vin.

Jimmy is back again tonight saying that last night in Easton, he and Lince got three points at the expense at Vin and Colin, but that isn’t enough. He reiterates that Vin likes to play mind games, and he can do the same. Jimmy then puts on the Equinox mask and heads for the ring.

Equinox’s music plays through the arena, and Jimmy comes out in full Equinox garb! This is an awesome little twist. Vin comes in from outside the arena in disbelief and anger. He actually sees the gear, and heads back outside! Vin stays in the crowd not wanting to get in the ring. Vin reluctantly steps over the guardrail, puts his Young Lions Cup under the ring, and gets in the ring.

Equinox (Jimmy Olsen) vs. Vin Gerard

Vin immediately rolls out of the ring. Equinox hits a baseball slide and chops the hell out of Vin. Equinox chases Vin near the ramp and pounds him down. He slams Vin on the entrance ramp and chops him once again. Back in the ring, Equinox takes down Vin with a series of arm dags. Vin holds onto the ropes blocking an arm drag and nails Equinox in the face with an elbow. Vin kicks Equinox away, not even wanting to touch him. Vin pounds on Jimmy and sends him to the mat with a Butterfly suplex. Vin chokes Equinox in the corner, yelling at him, asking what he is doing. Vin however looks extremely distressed in the ring. Equinox hits a flurry of offense but Vin takes him right back down. Vin hits the ropes to pop up off the second, but trips up, as if he is off his game. Vin still runs at Jimmy and nails the knee in the corner however. Equinox ducks and clotheslines and hits a flying forearm. Jimmy palm strikes Vin in the corner. Vin grabs Equinox’s leg and tries to send him to the mat for the STF, but Equinox lands on his feet and sends Vin to the floor with a hurricanrana! Equinox follows up with a dive through the middle rope. Vin goes back inside the ring. Equinox hits a top rope dropkick for the two count. Equinox hops off the second rope, but is caught and taken down by Vin. Vin hits a 2k1 Bomb for the two count. The fans chant “EQUINOX!” which eats Vin alive. Equinox escapes another 2k1 bomb. He takes Vin down to the mat and locks on the CHIKARA Special! This causes Vin to tap out! Equinox gets the win in an awesome match-up. The story telling here was incredible, and the action was always great. The fans were into it, and both men performed very well. ***1/2

Ophidian chops away at Uno. Uno hits a hard arm capture stunner and goes up top. He looks for the M. Bison Stomp but is cut off by Amasis. The Portal looks for a stack up superplex. Uno has Ophidian on his shoulders, and Dos pushes Amasis out of the way. Uno hits the rolling fireman’s carry off the top rope and is followed by a senton to Ophidian! Dos makes the pin and Ophidian amazingly kicks out! Ophidian is caught by Uno as he comes off the top rope with a sidewalk slam. Dos superkicks Ophidian down, and dives onto Amasis on the outside. Uno looks for the Bubble Bobble driver again, but Ophidian pauses him. Ophidian trips Uno and pins him for the three! We have new Campeones de Parejas! Wow, that was incredible. For one defense, the SSB made the most of it. This was a FINE title contest, and would main event any CHIKARA show. ****

The Portal dance up the ramp and pose with the belts. Dos yells at Uno, asking him what he was thinking wearing his pants with the game controller on them. Dos tells him to never wear them again, and leaves disappointed. Uno follows trying to explain.

Claudio catches Sekimoto off the ropes with the pop up European which doesn’t even get the one count! Claudio responds with the Sweet Schwinn Music which again doesn’t even get the one count! Claudio nails Sekimoto with the Ricola Bomb to get the victory for CHIKARA Pro Wrestling!

The entire CHIKARA team comes out to applaude. The Colony and Quack stand ringside, while Akuma applaudes from the aisleway. The fans chant “PLEASE COME BACK!” as Claudio shakes hands with Sekimoto, then Quack shakes his hand as he heads to the back. The entire BJW team hits the ring as Quack tells the crowd to give it up for them. The fans stand and applaude team Big Japan. Quack and Ito shake hands as the crowd whistles and cheers. Team CHIKARA stands on the apron and claps for them. Claudio comes in and shakes all their hands, before raising all the hands of team BJW.

This, my friends, is how you build a match. The ordering of the wrestlers could not have been better. Admittedly, it was kind of annoying to see the “CHIKARA guy eliminated, BJW guy eliminated” formula used over and over till Quackenbush, but it didn’t come off as forced or calculated. The matches got better and better as they went on, most everyone looked good, and the crowd dug it. It told a great story with Quackenbush regaining his win on Ito with a submission hold that not only he created, but personifies so much of what CHIKARA is. The story telling by everyone worked really well. I admit, there was plenty of sloppiness at points, especially with Akuma and Numazawa. That aside, the entire package as a whole was excellent and a must see for most any pro wrestling fan. ****1/2

The 411: Needless to say, you need this mamma jamma. Every single match was good, and the last two matches were incredible. It had plenty of storyline advancement, great wrestling, and fun moments. Much like Aniversarioct, it epitomizes everything that CHIKARA is all about in a fun little package. Snag this DVD and I assure you won’t be disappointed. It’s one of the top shows CHIKARA has done this year.
