The Triple Threat 1.14.07: The 34th Edition

January 14, 2007 | Posted by Sean, David, Alex

Hello everyone, welcome to another week in the wrestling world. We start college classes again on Tuesday so things will be a little more hectic in our lives. For wrestling WWE got a bad hit with Triple H’s injury, we talk about that and the PPV itself. We also talk about what WWE should do with DX and Angle vs. Joe III. So don’t miss this edition of the column.

Topic #1 New Years Revolution was last Sunday. What did you think of the show?

David: Supposedly the PPV was actually pretty good. I heard that the Umaga vs. Cena match wasn’t bad at all and that once again Jeff and Nitro stole the show. Csonka even said that the Rated RKO vs. DX match could have been a match of the year candidate if HHH didn’t tear his quad, seems like the show was solid for the most part. I’m just glad that they decided not to put in the elimination chamber again because that would have been over kill.

Alex: I did not see this PPV, from what I read, it sounded lack-luster at best. The cage match sounded disappointing, plus, this PPV was headlined by John Cena Vs. Umaga, so I am not really sure how much people were expecting out of this show.

Sean: The PPV was alright nothing really special. They did a great job in choosing the opener, which opened the show hot with another really good match between Hardy & Nitro. I liked the idea of the Tag Turmoil because it got all the tag teams on PPV. I don’t get why we needed Super Crazy & Hacksaw together. Seriously, if WWE thinks Carlito is digressing as a wrestler, put him into a tag team with Super Crazy. It would create another good team that could develop some chemistry, and get over because they have the Latino community behind them. Since WWE has never put their full faith behind Carlito, I don’t blame him for not always being tight with his moveset. WWE can do what they want with their tag division, it doesn’t matter to me, because I enjoy just watching the shows for what they are. I actually found myself laughing at the Rosie vs. Donald Trump thing. Anyway, Mickie vs. Victoria was not as good as it could have been. Maybe WWE is saving the big match for Wrestlemania. DX vs. Rated RKO could have been a great match and it sucks that Triple H got injured. Carlito vs. Masters was boring, and then surprisingly the main event was better than expected. Mainly because Cena got beat down and told a story in there with Umaga. Not worth 40 dollars, but it’s a single brand PPV you really shouldn’t be expecting much as it is.

Topic #2 There were no title changes at the PPV. Do you think there should have been?

David: I’m fine that none of the titles changed. I really didn’t want to see Umaga or DX going over in this PPV so I’m actually happy with the results. Maybe we will see some title changes at the Royal Rumble but right now i think all the titles are in good places.

Alex: I think this was the right thing to do. I was very against Nitro and Hardy trading the belt back and forth so desipte the fact that I don’t like Jeff Hardy, I don’t think he should lose the belt back to Nitro. Tag Titles, well the tag division on Raw is still struggling, but the brand is better off with Rated RKO as champs than DX, either way the World’s Greatest Tag Team would still be better. As for the World Title, I want a new champion but not “Umaga.” Who would buy this guy as champ? The 6 to 8 demographic?

Sean: I’m glad that Rated RKO and Cena kept their titles because it helps the show. The only reason I would say that Nitro maybe should have won the belt is because it would make the storyline a little more interesting. Also, it would help elevate Nitro some and they would have a reason to continue the feud. The problem I see WWE having is that now because of the revival of the tag division we have a four person mid-card. Flair is probably not going to do anything. Chris Masters, no one cares about him and his Masterlock got broken, so he can’t go anywhere but down. Carlito is just there right now, and Kenny is the only person on the rise. At the moment, we really only have one contender for the IC title and then everyone else. If WWE doesn’t want to do Carlito and Super Crazy as a tag team, at least build Super Crazy up and let him be in your mid-card. It would be silly for WWE to restore some prestige to the IC title and then have it be an afterthought at Wrestlemania because of the inevitable tag match between Hardyz & MNM. Hardy could still lose the belt to Kenny later, but having Nitro lose the belt to Carlito would set up a nice feud for Mania between Carlito and Kenny, where Kenny could have his first big title win at Wrestlemania. The Women’s title I expected to change hands, and it still could at Royal Rumble. Fans tend to care more about a good wrestler chasing after the bad wrestler for the title. I just hope Royal Rumble answers some questions I have.

Topic #3 WWE got some bad news on Sunday. Triple H tore his right quad and will be out anywhere from 4-8 months, how much does this hurt WWE? And what does WWE do with DX now?

David: It always hurts WWE when one of their big stars gets injured. I guess this might end DX, which in a way that is good and bad. It is good because DX has gotten stale to me but it is bad because I know there’s a lot of fans out there who love the hell out of DX. I’m guessing the RAW writers better get to work to fill in an empty spot. I guess if they really wanted to they could also put out HBK until HHH comes back and make a big DX return, it would work but I don’t know if it would be that great of an idea. I just hope HHH can come back one hundred percent.

Alex: Sucks for him. To me this isn’t all bad. Don’t get me wrong, in this sport I don’t wish injury upon anyone, but DX has been really hurting Raw for 6 months or so. I mean as a human I feel sorry for him, but as a mark I’m happy, now more storylines will take off on Raw, plus the WrestleMania main event might turn out better, I don’t know how many people wanted to see Triple H-Cena II, plus this means the VKM shit will finally end, this injury is a blessing.

Sean: Actually, David’s idea isn’t that farfetched, I’ll explain it in a second, and I think the VKM stuff will keep going for a bit because Russo thinks it’s the best thing going, because it shouldn’t have gone this long to begin with. First, it totally sucks that Triple H got injured. This puts DX on life support and pretty much kills WWE’s cash cow. DX merchandise sells out everywhere WWE goes, and now the burden will be on Cena once again to be the flag bearer for the company. This also comes at a bad time because it’s around WWE’s high point of the year where everything usually goes up and WWE prepares for the big Wrestlemania hoopla. This HBK vs. EDGE & Orton feud can only continue until the Rumble, after that it would be silly to keep it going. The only good thing about this is that now we might finally see the one match I’ve wanted to see for a long time. HBK vs. EDGE, this could be a match of the year candidate if everything is done right. With WWE probably going with John Cena vs. Randy Orton in the main event, the logical opponent for EDGE would be HBK. Those are two matches I’d love to see. HBK also has been waiting to have his knee surgery. They could effectively end DX and let HBK have his surgery. Then have both Triple H and Michaels, comeback together. However, I probably wouldn’t do that, because bringing DX back again with nothing new, may end up great, or may be crapped all over. Again, it’s up to WWE here, but I honestly would have the HBK vs. EDGE match, maybe do a rematch at Backlash, and let HBK have some time off. Have Triple H comeback as a single’s star, since he’s been away from the title race for a long while anyway.

Topic #4 Great Khali is on RAW now. What do you think of this move? Also Snitsky may be moved to ECW. Would that be a good idea?

David: I hate the Great Khali and wish that he would get fired all together. I think Snitsky would fit perfect in ECW. Hes a big power wrestler and hes ugly, he fits PERFECT. For some reason I like Snitsky, I have no idea why but I think he would be a great addition to the ECW roster. At least Snitsky can wrestle better then Khali which is always a plus. I wish Snitsky lots of luck in ECW.

Alex: Both of these guys are a joke, they are not wrestlers, and I don’t know why anyone would care about this. On the plus side, Davari may be on his own now, which I have been waiting for a while.

Sean: Great Khali serves one purpose and one purpose only. He provides that shock factor that the Big Show used to give WWE fans back in the 90’s. However, Big Show at least could wrestle to an extent and talk understandable English. Big Show could actually cut a good promo and was a funny guy. Khali can’t do anything other than stand there and look big. He’s like a walking tree that is immobile and just smacks you around with a slap. Snitsky would be a nice addition to the ECW roster. Yeah, he’s a more charismatic and skilled Mike Knox, but if WWE could build him up some in ECW, who knows what could happen.

Fun Topic of the Week: With DX on the skids, should WWE add anyone to the group?

David: I don’t think they should add a new member at all. I think they should just end DX all together and end it on a high note. Lets not rehash old gimmicks from the past and lets make new idea to make the fans wild.

Alex: Well DX wasn’t really a group, but I digress. The stable in the E is a lost art. Evolution was the last great stable the E had, so if they could do something like that again I would be fine with that, we will just have to wait and see. I’m waiting to see the E’s answer to LAX.

Sean: There is no reason to add anyone. There is isn’t anyone that would make sense in DX besides possibly CM Punk or Carlito and they would be better off alone. Besides, I don’t think the fans would accept another revamped DX. Then again, we could have HBK leading the charge of the greatest rehash ever. They can keep Michaels under the DX montage until they decide to give him time off, but other than that, it would just show WWE is desperate.

Topic #6 A lot has been made of the build to Angle vs. Joe III not being that great. Also, many have a problem with the match being an ironman match. What is your opinion on the match and build so far?

David: These matches between Joe and Angle have been going way to quickly. This would have been a hell of a lot better if TNA decided to string this out over a long period of time. This would give the matches huge build up and make everything so much better. Yeah the matches have been great but the build up could make them so much better.

Alex: Yeah, this build had been “Russo-Riffic” to quote Csonka. But like I said before, it is tough to say that Samoa Joe wrestling Kurt Angle is going to be bad, it is just unfortunate that this feud was so rushed and that it hurt Angle’s character in TNA. As far as the Ironman stipulation goes, I am
looking the forward to the match itself, a half hour is at least amount of time these guys need in my opinion, I do wish it was a sixty minute Ironman, but what are you going to do? BUT if this match ends in a “draw” I will have Total Non-Stop Anger.

Sean: There’s nothing wrong with having the matches in a row since TNA only has like two big PPV’s and no special shows like WWE does, especially, if they want to close the book on Joe vs. Angle for a while. However, if you want to copy HBK vs. Angle, (which still has not been eclipsed by this feud, from any standpoint) at least do it right. I don’t mind the Ironman stipulation as long as we put over Joe in the process. Having a tie would mean nothing because unlike HBK vs. Angle, Joe & Angle are not on the same level. Also the tie would mean that Russo is an idiot, can’t think of anything original, and was so silly he had to redo a feud that was done last year. Why in the world did we have a long brawl to promote an Ironman match? That is why TNA may call themselves “wrestling” (only on PPV mind you, ECW has more wrestling on their show.) They sure don’t know how to do a feud right. TNA’s stories made a lot more sense sans Russo. As long as they do the right thing here, we can forget about the silly build. The match should be another great one from these two though.

Topic # 7 TNA Final Resolution is tonight, what do you think of the card?

David: The PPV looks decent to me. The Abyss vs. Sting vs. Christian match could be very good. I’m just hoping that Christian could regain the title because he’s hot right now in his heel role. I’m really not happy about the Joe vs. Angle 30 minute iron man match. For one, its continuing their series too quick and, two this is seeming like the repeat of Angle vs. Michaels. I was actually there for the 30 minute iron man match between Angle and Michaels. I remember that the match ended up in a tie so if the same thing happens here I will be pissed. Everything else looks good, hopefully in the end everything ends out great.

Alex: Well it will be interesting to see the feedback from the IWC on this one. I loved Genesis, and people on here hated it. I thought Turning Point was solid, minus the finish of the Triple Threat. I think this PPV will be good, but it is seemingly Turning Point II. That being said, AJ-Rhino should be good. Heel AJ has actually been entertaining. I have a surprising amount of
faith in the LAX-Team 3D match, since the James Gang garbage LAX has yet to
have a “bad” match. I already gave my thoughts on Angle-Joe III. I am really
stoked about Jerry Lynn returning to the ring and I think the X-Division
triple threat match should be excellent. The NWA Title triple threat match
should be good, hopefully there won’t be the excessive interference and
botches from the last one, if those elements are gone, it should be a great
match. I love CC, but I am kinda hoping Abyss keeps the strap, and most
importantly, the PCS will come to ahead this Sunday. When I stopped laughing
and actually realized that Alex Shelly is going to face Austin Starr
(Aries), I realized we are going to have a good match on our hands, and if
the rumors are true about Bob Backlund is coming in as a judge, we could
have the first ever six star internet match on our hands. All in all, TNA
usually delivers on PPV and I expect no less on this one.

Sean: Angle vs. Joe III, Christian vs. Abyss vs. Sting should be another good affair, and Austin Starr vs. Alex Shelley could be the best ten minute match you could ever see. I haven’t TNA in a while, so I can’t really comment on the rest.

Match of the Week Nominees: CM Punk vs. Hardcore Holly, ECW Championship: Bobby Lashley vs. RVD (ECW), Matt Bentley vs. Kurt Angle, James Storm, AJ Styles, Chris Sabin & Petey Williams vs. Christopher Daniels, Rhino & Petey Williams (TNA Impact), WWE Tag Team Championship: London & Kendrick vs. Regal & Taylor, Chris Benoit vs. Mr. Kennedy (SmackDown).

Explanation: This honor goes to any match from RAW, ECW, TNA, or SmackDown that we felt had the best match this week. If we all happened to go to an Indy or House show we may list that on here too.

David: Chris Benoit vs. Mr. Kennedy

Alex: Matt Bentley vs. Kurt Angle

Sean: Chris Benoit vs. Mr. Kennedy

YAY SEAHAWKS!!!!!! ANYWAY. let’s get down to business. I’ve been absent on the feedback mainly because my little sis Chelsea had her Appendix or however ya spell removed. Now I’ve also spent this time thinking up a great Dream Match and I’ve narrowed it down to two potentials. either Alex Shelley & Petey Williams & Homicide vs. Gregory Helms Paul London & some other Cruiserweight that’s gifted in Submissions like Shelley. or ‘Cide vs Helms in a Ladder match.
Sean: Sorry to hear about your sister, I hope she’s feeling better. Either one of these would be great I’d say. Think about it, and send us a choice next week. Thanks for the feedback though.

Well that is all for this week folks. Thanks everyone for reading. Well let us know what your opinions are with some feedback. It’s always good to have someone else to argue with besides these guys. We hope you enjoyed this edition of the column and we will see ya’s laters. Later Triple Threaters.
