The Wrestling 5 & 1 01.14.12: Kaitlyn Versus Velvet!

January 14, 2012 | Posted by Greg De Marco

“Let’s make wrestling fun again.”
~Johnny Gargano, as said on The Greg DeMarco Show

I have no clue why a woman would ever get in to wrestling. The pay for them is shit, the glass ceiling on their career is obvious, and the respect level is about on par with midgets(the Chelsea Handler joke at Beth Phoenix’s expense is perfect proof of this).
Posted By: Guest#1941

I don’t know the answer to your question about why a woman would get into wrestling. But there are people I can ask…

No more chances for Mickie. She was hot for about six months when she was stalking Trish, but ever since then her career, and her sex appeal, have taken a nose dive.
Posted By: Guest#0873

She made it within one victory of the Hall not once, but twice. After each, everyone wanted her to get more chances, saying she just went down to future members of the Hall. But that goodwill seems to have expired.

Sure TNA has gotten better recently. It always has when Hogan and Bishoff find themselves elsewhere for a while, like last summer. Check it out, ratings did go up then.
But after a 4-6 weeks they go back to their old habits. Oddly, this tells me Russo can be a good booker for a little bit, until the Ritalin wears off.
So until they prove to me they can have the control to keep booking right, I will watch with some trepidation. They are working against a decade of history here.
Posted By: Guest#0149

That’s my fear.

I don’t know why people expect women to be loyal to wrestling, or at least big wrestling companies, when the companies aren’t so loyal to women.
Posted By: Guest#0657

There is no loyalty in wrestling. Male or female, a promotion is going to stick you if you’re either a) making money, or b) someone they see money-making potential in.

Because women are fucking stupid for pursuing wrestling as their primary career. Rain got a bunch of surgery on her face and she’ll NEVER be signed by WWE.
Much respect to the chicks that treat the business like the whore it is and quit once they get a name. Kelly will be the next one.
Posted By: Guest#0922

First off, Rain got some injections. She didn’t have any surgery. And she didn’t get implants, as they weren’t needed. But she is in the minority. I know plenty of indy chicks that have had implants and will never make it. And I know a few that are now at 30 and won’t get another shot, but they might have gotten if they had implants. The name Erica D’Erico comes to mind (Google it).

HELL yes to Tara. I thought she was hot as Victoria years ago and she is STILL hotter than hell.
Posted By: Hitman

Okay. Yes to Tara. Noted.

I have nothing but faith in Y2J. He has a plan and I think it’ll work gloriously. Like most, I think it’s CM Punk vs. Jericho at WM28, and I couldn’t be more excited. These two are top notch on the mic and the in the ring. It’s time to find out who is truly the BEST IN THE WORLD!
Posted By: SteveyMac

Jericho’s first appearance is getting a pass from those who might not have liked it on its own. But it can’t stand on its own, it’s part of a larger story. It’s the beginning, not the end. Just like Bound For Glory.

Wouldn’t mind a Barrett v Lesnar WM 29 match. By that time Wade should be a legit maineventer and hopefully had a world title reign.
Posted By: Ryan Haseldine

Exactly. And Barrett’s reputation as a bare-knuckle fighter can actually come in handy!

I question bringing Brock back as a face. He always made for a boring, terrible face. If he does in fact make a return to WWE, I would bring him in as a monster heel who thinks he is above wrestling (ala Hollywood Rock), and eventually feed him to Cena – who has been the poster boy for “I’m here every night because I love this business,” or whoever the next hot babyface may be.
Posted By: The TradeMark Experience

I think he gets a face reaction to start, and you use it to elevate Barrett. Once that issue is resolved at WM29, you build to Lesnar-Cena at SummerSlam.

TNA just needs consistency and they will move in the right direction. A part of me would like for them to bring back the 6 sided ring or at least make it an attraction. They have the talent they just don’t have the right bookers.
Posted By: watever87

I’ve given up on the 6-sided ring. I’m fine with four sides if the booking and talent are right.

The booking of the last two matches pretty much intersects. I’d like to see both Storm and Roode going over, then moving directly into their feud for the belt. If Angle wins, I’m going to be really nervous about the possibility of Hardy winning the title. Which would make me sick. To my stomach. Probably literally.
Posted By: the ghost of Buddy Rogers

Storm losing made sense, and Roode losing by DQ also made sense. Looks like several rematches in store at Against All Odds, unless they go with a 3-or-4-way (spoiler free for me!).

SO once again, just from the videos, and the videos ALONE, what the hell made all you people know it was Jericho coming back. Honestly I NEVER EVER EEEEEVAH saw or thought these promos were for him.
Legit answers only! Trolls go be “An Hero”
Posted By: Markus M. Markison

I think there are a few factors at play. Last year’s videos were for The Undertaker, so most people didn’t expect a repeat. Most also expected the promos to be intended to make us think it was ‘Taker, meaning most of what we saw was meaningless. And there was that whole “Chris” on the notebook thing.

You’re right about the TNA front. They’re finally doing something productive with their roster. There’s hiccups along the way but it’s more or less on course. Too bad they’re doing it at a time when interest in TNA is at an all time low.
Posted By: Guest#9582

As long as they keep things right, people will come back. Wrestling fans are cyclical. TNA just needs to be patient—which is very hard in wrestling.

There are times where I think you rig the votes so you don’t have to add somebody to the Hall of Bang. Seriously.
Sunny. Can’t vote against a classic.
Posted By: Nickels And Vines

Can’t say that I do. Rain would have been in, and Buggy would be in, too. I keep it legit.

All of you!

And…

Confusing, I know…

Monday’s RAW featured the anticipated return of Brodus Clay. Words cannot do justice what we saw when it happened. The response to the actions captured in the YouTube video above is pretty much split down the middle. Some people hate what the WWE did. Others absolutely love it. One thing that you can’t argue is that generic monster heel Brodus Clay destroying a jobber to the stars like Curt Hawkins would not have gotten the response that this got…

Complete with Ernest “The Cat” Miller’s WWE theme, Brodus Clay returned to a changed man. Gone was the standard issue black singlet—replaced by a shiny red singlet, and it was paired with a matching track suit. The menacing and ominous music was replaced with the funky beats we all heard on that night. Brodus didn’t grunt or scream like monsters, instead he yelled out catchphrases to keep things going. For some people it was just what the doctor ordered. For others, it was a huge disappointment.

But why is it such a disappointment to so many? I think the answer is pretty simple—the WWE didn’t do what those fans wanted them to do. People wanted Brodus to be a heel monster—much like his NXT & Superstars appearances. Yet the problems with that plan are plentiful. By the third or fourth week, people would start asking if the WWE is going to do anything with Brodus, because we’re getting the same match over & over again. In fact, those complaining have no room to complain. They’ve supported far worse gimmicks in the past.

But I’m solidly with the opposite. Anyone listening to The Greg DeMarco show from Tuesday knows that I feel there’s far more potential in The Funkasaurus than The Generic Monster. Brodus Clay has shown so much charisma in brief performances during his NXT run and his time protecting Alberto Del Rio. It doesn’t mean he can’t be a killer when provoked.

I read on multiple sites that there’s “more money” in the old Brodus Clay. That’s just crazy. The old Brodus would sell like 8 t-shirts, and wouldn’t get any reaction from the fans. The new Brodus—The Funkasaurus—will climb into the WWEShop Top 10 as soon as they can crank out the necessary merchandise to do so.

Mark my words: “The Funkasaurus” Brodus Clay will be a major star in the WWE.

You Decide: How successful will Brodus Clay be in the WWE?

Another highlight of RAW was the announcement of the first two inductees into the WWE Hall of Fame for 2012. The ceremony takes place on March 31, and the line-up is already shaping up to be amazing. That includes the greatest stable of all time, who go in as a group. The Four Horsemen. While there have been many iterations of the Horsemen, the group being inducted consists of Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham and J.J. Dillon. And there’s no better combo to use.

Those would be my top choice as well. as a kid, I loved the Horsemen. They’re the reason I started cheering for the heels. Or as I called them as a kid, the “rule breakers.” It was fun to cheer when Arn & Tully came running in to interfere in one of Flair’s matches.

The interesting aspect is the exclusion of Lex Luger. You could argue for Luger’s induction into the Hall of Fame, but that’s predicated on the fact that guys like Koko B. Ware are in the Hall. But if you ask Luger, well… Hell, we can ask him ourselves! Busted Open Radio did, and Luger was very candid.

Barry Windham obviously is a wonderful choice. I know he has some health struggles. What an honor that would be and maybe a real boost to both Barry and his father who also has some health issues. I think that would be very cool at the Hall of Fame to see Barry get inducted. … My career in retrospect and you guys know the place I’m in, in my life right now and to be mentioned in the same breath with the famed Four Horsemen. To be a part of that in the time I was. I think Barry is a wonderful selection. I’ll be there to give him a standing ovation and cheer him on. I am happy I was ever a part of that group so I don’t feel slighted at all.”

So if Lex isn’t upset, then I can’t be either. Luger is in a great place for himself, and his attitude is one full of thankful humility. Good for him. And he’s right. Good for Barry Windham, too.

But do you want my opinion? Sure you do. You’re reading my column! Lex Luger, Barry Windham and Arn Anderson are Hall of Famers on their own. Tully, JJ, Ole can go in as “Horsemen.”

Regardless, the WWE is really going all out for this Hall of Fame. They want Flair in town for the ceremony. And you know he’ll be there. He’s Ric Flair!

You Decide: Do you like the induction? What do you think about Luger? Will Flair appear?

Edge was announced as the first inductee for 2012, and he will be the headliner of this year’s class. Edge is being inducted at the first ceremony after his retirement, the equivalent of a first ballot Hall of Famer. And he’s 100% deserving of that honor.

In 2004, I said that the window of opportunity for Edge was closing—and fast. I felt like it was time to strike, and if that time passed, it would be over for him. It was nearly two full years later that Edge would win his first world title. In 2011, he eleventh and final reign ended when the belt was vacated by retirement. Edge had grown into a sure thing in the wrestling business, and he obviously put his body through hell to do it. His retirement caused a total shuffling of the deck at the WWE Draft. And his presence is sorely missed.

Edge’s career has been chronicled recently, thanks to his unfortunate retirement. There is no need to rehash it once more. But Edge deserves a ton of credit for being one of the very best in the world. Completely deserving of first ballot Hall of Fame status.

You Decide: Is Edge the right choice to headline the 2012 WWE Hall of Fame?

Man, it’s a great time to be a DeMarcette! Four amazingly beautiful women, each loaded with the potential for big things in the wrestling business. Well, things are starting to happen for each…
